  • wow the 50 sythns looked really old

  • awesome sequence...... not likely to be able to do this on a Doepfer MAQ16/3.... or can we.

  • awesome sequence......

  • WHY THE HELL would anyone give this a 'dislike'? That's almost as mind-boggling as what you are doing in this video.

  • Thanks so much for posting that !!!! This music is similar to Ricochet Part 2 - Tangerine Dream Live 1976.... Big thanks morbius001 for that !!!!

  • @74tc That's exactly what I was thinking. A real Tangerine Dream...and I want one so bad!

  • sounds like some of the first kraftwerk(the sound)

  • I used to do something similar with a Zyklus MPS patched into 2 Ataris running Midi Grid. The feedbacks were chaotic and unpredictable, like some one invisible was remixing the stuff I'd written.I could play with it for hours

This is very cool. This set up looks like it's a lot of fun an inspiring to boot.

    Great post. Thnx.

  • Very TDish, impossible not to think about the sounds of Rubycon and Ricochet, anyway every artists was not able to use a Moog modular at the time, and its still coasting big today. Bravo you master this beast (a little intimidating!) sequencer very well, just wait for some more consistent Emusic with more layers, pads, noise, and themes. thanks

  • os timbres estao legais e a ideia musical tb. Mostre o instrumento inteiro

    abç

  • Hell yeah!

  • Hell yeah!

  • Great sound Professor. Thanks for sharing the Krell technology with us.

  • Hey Morb, what kind of delay (analogue?) are you using there? (And presume it's a standard 3/8 delay?) Excellent work! Si-UK

  • VERY impressive! I have been messing with synths for years but do not think I could pull this sorta thing thing off. keep up the good work.

  • Beautious, beautious ANALOG!!!! Jimmy want!!

  • cela évoque pour moi les séquences magique des TANGERINE DREAM période 75 / 78

  • We had some old pre-midi analog gear in the lab at a local college and only one person bothered programming it in a year, eventually they were sold for cheap. Sound is sound. I like the fact that this equipment is not sent to the basement but rather used and explored. As far as cost effective, getting a rare modular and maintaining it is not even close. For those seeking to get (results) anywhere near this type of music i suggest soft synths that emulate Moog success.

    PaX

  • this is my friends, what i call - Love ;)

  • great sounds but those things are so damn large couldnt see using it live w/o 10 friends to help you move it.

  • the chemical brothers use synths that big live

  • Pretty cool stuff! It's the sort of thing I'd love to play around with some! But I wonder, are the results worth the expense?

Are there ways a person can make similar synthesized sounds, that are more cost effective than going modular?

    Good stuff though! Thanks!

    Peace,

    \A/

  • korg microkorg, emx, radius, waldorf blofeld, microQ, roland SH201, sh09, dave smith mopho, novation xio, alesis micron. pretty much any VA synth will be cost effective

  • I've got a couple of early Moog commercial keyboards, the Prodigy and the MG-1 Concertmate (made for Realistic). They do an awful lot by themselves. However, I could use a sequencer, or a better understanding of what I have, to be able to make music like this demonstrates. Modular is probably the more ideal way to go. It's just not as practical cost wise as say a Korg MicroKorg or a Roland SH201. Thanks for the input!

    Peace,

    \A/

  • ohhh i see, so u alread have good gear, get an mfb sequencer, there pretty cheap and look easy to program. although cheap is very relative lol

  • Tangerine Dream, Ricochette

  • my thoughts exactly

  • Cool sound!

    あんたはすごい

  • what synth is that, what brand?¿

  • Seriously, you can't take two seconds to read the first sentence of his description and figure it out?

  • TX dude...es increible el sonidazo

    :D

  • nice! very nice!

  • unique !

  • Cool !!!

  • nice !

  • TAdream sound...

  • i don't like that thats boring !!!

  • drop the 4-4 beat and you'll have ravers at your feet

  • Serge63

    i like that 70,s sound

  • Whoa! That was awesome! I want it ! :D

  • I Want One!!!

  • i love Tangerine Dream's version of this but this really cool too ,what a synth.

  • nice!!!

  • Hello Morbius, I've posted this video on switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com

  • !!! BEAUTYFULL !!!

  • Love it!

    speak soon....

    peace

  • Coolnes

  • Souds Like Chris Franke and a little bit TD.

I play synth and maybe we could make some money together

    Marco...Foxtrot

    Puyallup, Washington

  • nice vid.

  • I'm always so impressed with your sequencer work I just bought your CD so I don't have to listen on YouTube all the time! ;-)

    John L Rice

  • What CD is that? (where)?

  • It's fascinating to see this up close. Now I can hear where Tangerine Dream's Ricochet performance comes from! It's a peek through a keyhole in the history of electronic music, a short period, before MIDI, when musicians like TD and Klaus Shulze were exploiting the abilities of the new technology. Thanks.

  • nice sounds

  • This is so good. I love visiting here and listening to it very often. Please let me know if you have a website or any new videos.....

  • Top video and music mate. I'll never tire of listening to that wonderful beast. You are very skillful.

PS And I thought my Evolver was fun... :-)

  • this is the shiznit

  • I have a synthesizers.com studio 22. Will it work fine with the Q-960/Q-962/Q-963 or is the Q960 Sequential Controller demanding a bigger system?

If you click my name you will see my modular dot.com demo and information about my system.

  • The best place to discuss this is on the synthesizers.com user's group on Yahoo... but- it'll work... but won't you have to get another cabinet?

  • Ok-thanks,I will go to the forum with my question.

  • @morbius001 Hi there, i've been interested in modular synths like this for a while, and i'm interested in finding out more about their capabilities. Would someone, after tinkering a bit, be able to sequence something a bit more complex, like a daft punk bass line with something like this, or is it just capable of blips and beeps? Thanks for the help!

  • T DREAM sound of the seventiees, great

  • Geez... I WANT THE SCHEMATIC FOR THAT....

    DROOL...

how the hell does that make teh music?????

  • It doesn't... I do. It's just a tool. ; )

  • @morbius001: Maybe you're only the synth's tool, considering this modular beast. You feel like the synth is your tool but that's nothing more than a perfidious illusion induced by the synth. :D

  • Here we go...That's what I'm talking about.

    Very cool indeed!!

  • This is freaking nice.

  • I love all your videos and I play them regularly. I'm still looking forward to being able to get hold of a CD/download of your work. Any news on that?

    Yours Aye

    Stuadh

  • Thanx for the comment. I've got the music tracks done for the CD... just getting the artwork ready, now. (Jeez... sobriety is NOT what's it's craked up to be!).

  • I have a question about the effect of technology on musical activities- is music going back into a more 2-dimensional 'thing' with the ever increasing use of technology, and is this technology taking away musicianship?

  • I think technology has made it easy for 'anyone' to get into music (term used loosely)... as can be seen just about everywhere these days. There are some, who could not be playing 'any' music, without their computer... or their turntable/DJ scratch-thingies... or without their 'push-a-button-make-a-sound synth'. And, those are easy to spot. And then, there are others who use technology as a tool- just another brush an artist uses on the canvas. I am actually a musician, and recording engineer.

  • thanks for the comment, it will be well noted, as its the only intellegent one i have recieved. i too am a musician using both traditional instruments and synths/computers but only because they take less room than having an orchestra in your house. So do you think music has lost its aesthetic purpose?

  • Nah... I think it's just one more fad... the "what's hip THIS week" people. Next week, it'll be something else... perhaps setting themselves on fire! : ) Computers have made it easy for any fool to make an attempt. Can you imagine if piloting aircraft, brainsurgery, or even directing traffic were permitted in the same way, by those same people? What I see... a lot of 'real' musicians and producers going back to analog synths because they've run out of 'sounds' on their push-a-button synths.

  • this very good, you know most people who show off their modulars on youtube are musically clueless. This piece seems to be well composed compared to the most.

    Very good!

  • Well thanx. :)

Actually, there was very little preplanning, and no 'writing' in advance. This was strictly an 'on-the-fly' improv. Only the tuned notes, and the posssible patterns were set up in advance. How they were all put together happened live... just as you see it here. Jeez... just thinking about it... I'm not sure I'd want to try doing this while following a 'scored' piece on sheet music. wOw! : o

  • yes, I noticed it, I worked with analog sequencers too. By composed I didnt mean a scored piece but a well prepared and harmonic piece.

  • Sound like from Vangelis...

  • heres another question im burning to know, what are those switches, one next to the shift imput and one below the bottom output jack on the sequencial switch module? is this that jumper function thing? im thinking maybe you rigged it that way so you didnt have to use the q149 module to switch signals around..sorry if I sound ignorant as hell here, im just trying to get educated on this stuff.. :D

  • Limited to only 500 characters... The 'shift' switch enables/disables the patchcord inserted into the jack.

The other switch functions as an enable/disable and a 'forced' function. I believe I made entries about this in the dotcom WIKI, if you need more info.

  • (heh-heh... a way to bypass the 500 character limit)... you said 'jumper'... which 'jumper' are you referring to?... the WF-modification? if so, no... this has nothing to do with that. And no, this isn't pertaining to the Signal Selector module. That's a strictly 'manual' switching module. These two modifications are designed to add functionality to the 962's design.

  • at 00:15 and at 00:18 you hit a switch on the module above the 960, it has this coupling effect, like adding another layer or octave, is this what is reffered to as the standards module?

    really curious...

  • No... actually, that's a modified 8-channel mixer. To use it in 'preset' type situations (like shown), you can set the levels where you want them, then just switch-on or off the inputs. So in this video, I'm switching on/off bass, 5th, and detuned unison. And, nope... no noise or pops. I don't hear any... do you? ; )

  • yeah thats a real sensible modification, beats the hell out of me why companies that produce analog mixers dont think of that..

  • Always com back here and take a listen if I left alone my Modular too long.

This little sequences are so beautifull and inspiring...Thanx a lot and big Respect!

  • Mongo impressed....

  • Where can I get a CDROM. This is classic.

  • that sound is amazing, love it.

  • Fantastic, I love anaologue synths. Can I buy this music via your web site on CD ?

I have tried the web site unisynth, but it appears to be 'down' or under construction.

Fab vid - post some more !

    DC

  • very very nice.I love it.I love sequenzers!!!

  • So much you can do with your hands on this simple sequencer but with all around, are you a clone of chris franke, some moods are so near to early TD's. This show's how much you can do with few slightly moves, now this must be inserted to a bigger piece.

  • damn..if i owned that thing id become a hermit for sure!

  • This is what electronic music is all about!

    Great stuff!

  • wicked. i have been unsure which modular synth i should settle for to start getting a system, this video might have made my decision a lot easier. must start the plan!

  • Yeaaahhh this is really awesome. Very nice!

  • wow, this is so awesome dude.

i love on the fly stuff as well, since some of my music is also like that =)

  • nice job, love that sound... had to break out Hoenig's 'Hanging Garden Transfer' and give it another listen... more stuff please, from that monster synth!

  • suuuuuuuuuperb all the best donnie

  • Lovely work...really nice job!

  • Thanks for posting this!

    Far out!

  • yhay was just what i ment to say :)) ,nothing can beat the feal and result of an analog synth :P

  • cool :)) ,now u cand do it digital on the computer ,but it mimics the synth :)) very cool

  • I doubt that. This is all improvised... played all "on-the-fly"! How are you gonna do that on a menu-based system? You must have immediate access to each and every control. There's just some things that analog does better... just as, there are some things digital does better.

  • If you are to play a written piece of music, do you need to have a sheet for all those knobs and their positions or have you mastered them so that you can play it on the fly by reading the notes without pre-programming?

  • It depends. I don't use 'scored' music. I usually write most everything 'on-the-fly'. Usually, most sounds I can set-up without doing any patch notation- but every now and then, ya get something pretty complex... so ya don't wanna risk forgetting what you've done. Of course, digital rigs memorize the patches... but then, digital doesn't let you play stuff on-the-fly like this, either.

  • This totally reminds me of the music on the Main Menu for 'Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy'. :)

  • i love that....can u do that kind of stuff with the smaller models they have? like the portable 22? awesome anyway.

  • Well done, I enjoyed that.

    Tnx 4 posting.

  • You might have already answered this somewhere, but where are the notes coming from? That is, do you have some sort of external MIDI sequencer?

  • No... this is not MIDI... it's voltage-control analog (pre-MIDI). VC allows you to stuff that MIDI doesn't. As to where the notes are coming from... ya see the flashing lights? Each one is a note.

  • and knobs control if its hould be played and which pitch ;) thats why hes twisting.

  • HOWEVER: i LOVE IT MAN, MY FAVOURITE VIDEO, WELL DONE, HAVE YOU ANY MORE?

  • There's two others posted here on YouTube.

  • Thank you, I love Electronic music...Tomita...Kitaro...Klaus Schulze...Michael Garrison...Vangelis...Tan Dream of course...Jean Michel Jarre who has lost his inspiration and should get back in the recording studio...Just love Philip Glass and Steve Reich and their minimal music etc.

  • TANGERINE DREAM?

  • Nope... 'Navel orange' dream.

  • thats what I'm talking about!

  • sweat analog sound!

  • Looks like Fruity indeed, in a way. Nice music though. Yeah, it's simple, but it has a different point, doesn't it?

  • fruity loops

  • and the model could be a Studio-110 !!!

  • Yes, indeed, it's beautiful elektronik Musick!!!

  • beautiful electronic music !!!

  • Yes man, this is good old synth work. very nice, pal.

  • I just voted for this on the underground thing. I hope you get some recognition morbius.

  • Remonds me of the Throbbing Gristle (Chris Carter) Track "Walkabout" very similar

  • Ah! it is really a music which points out my childhood to me. I listened to this music when I was 4 years old. The sequencer is ... great ! long live Morbius

  • STFU.

    Moog is the best!

  • Thanx... I think... ummmmm this is NOT a MOOG.

  • Yes, I know. It's modular analog synth.

  • Well... if brand-name was the intention, it's Synthesizers.com (or a "dotcom", as many of us call them).

  • omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow! nice technique you've going there!

  • analog sequencing with analog synths ...sweetness

  • I've got to say, that's some pretty great synth work! Nice!!! I really like your sound and your style of sequencing!

  • Thanx to all of you who have taken the time to comment. I have been wanting to add more vids... but I've got (evidently) so many irons in the fire, I can't seem to get any of them done. (I guess I don't drink enough).

Anyway- if you'd care to hear some stuff that wil be on my upcoming CD, go to my website: www.unisynth.com. I have recorded under the name "Cybertron" since the mid-70's.

  • Oh man, that sequencer, nuts.

  • impressive

  • duh... yeah... I was at his memorial in Asheville. We were talking about ELP.

  • Yea....us and 300,000 or more......It was a super concert. I was in the tent behind the stage and the sound was SO amplified to the front (at the stage and about 150 ft out), it was hard to hear clearly , but it sure was fun...It was the last of it's kind. Ironically the raceway was torn down in the ealy 80s, but ELP are still around. I was really happy when the DVD came out in 2003. It was recorded by ABC, who sat on it until then.

  • Well.... they're all still around, in that none of them have died- but they haven't been together as a group for years. Keith and Carl have their own groups. I dunno what Greg is up to (if anything)... but he sure has put on the weight.

It's funny how Prog-rock has come back into favor... and younger people are discovering that there ARE some people with talent, rather than just digital sequencers and samplers. (Whoopse... that opinion usually gets people mad at me when I voice it).

  • Look for the DVD SET Beyond The Beginning on one of the DVDs is their performance at CALJAM in 74.The crowd was huge and Emerson really gets into it....I was stoned and thought I had gone over the edge of reality, after setting his synth to autoplay, he ran over to a 12 foot grand piano.which rose up into the air....Then started rotating......what a trip. All to the sound of Great Gates At Kiev full on. Keep up the good work Moribus. .chuck

  • Yup... I've got all those DVD's. I remember the California Jam... it was one week to the day after I saw ELP in Memphis, and sat 4th row, center.

    Ah.... those were the days.

  • YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT SOME OF KEITH EMERSON'S (OF ELP)WORK IN THE EARY 70'S...He worked closely with Bob Moog in the development of analog synths for bands.....Did some really cool stuff.

  • Heh-heh! Ummmm... Keith Emerson is my musical inspiriation. As a matter of fact, that's how I started out programming analog modulars back in the early 70's... by figuring-out EMO's patches... (Tomita's also). I finally met Keith and Bob both at the first Moogfest in NYC... I showed both of them my pix of my systems... and got a healthy 'wOw' from each.

  • Hmm ... Good day for all. And the pizza was pretty good as well, eh Morb. By the way did you ever figure out what that strange Moog module Emo had?

  • Love the way you set it up and then began to play very cool, good sounds - how much you want for that thing??

  • $25k ; )

  • fucking hot.

  • They are GE lamps... just like on the original Moog 960.

  • great!

  • omg 6666 views but 6666...

  • this is incredible stuff, but im still holding out for a system 700 modular as in the uk we cant get one of these beauties (too much shipping and tax, not to mention customs nightmares)

    www.juicyaudio.com

    www.myspace.com/thek2plan

  • I love this. Great rythmic changes too.

  • please enable the embedd video!i love this and would love to put it on my myspace!!!!!

  • Damb... Looks like fun.

  • I grew up listening to these kinds of electronic sounds. So warm and inviting. I could listen to this all day! Thanks for posting this!

  • analog!!

  • This takes me back to the best of Tangerine Dream's early works. Just love it!!! This is the kind of sequencing PC based sequencers haven't got a clue about!!

  • you da man, morbius =D! how can you afford such nice gear?

you composed "Dreamstate", right? awesome track! i listen to it very often, really good stuff. keep up the good work and don't EVER sell you dotcom-system :)

  • You'd be surprised at how much money you can divert if you cut out stuff that ya don't really need. I had to give up my night job as a male-hooker... had too much in refunds ; )

Yep, Dreamstate is one of mine, but... I don't do sequences exclusively... some of the sequencer tunes I did as demos to show some of the guys on the synthesizers.com users group what some of the capabilities are.

  • synthesizers.com forever :-)

    nice sequencing demo!

  • what does the decay and sustain sound like? ;x can it make some heavy low freq bass?

  • In a nice and friendly way, I've got to say that your question doesn't seem to make sense. I'm assuming that you have no experience with synthesizers?

'Decay' and 'sustain' are functions of the envelope generators, and aren't usually directly connected with making heavy, low-frequency bass sounds. For more general info on EG's: http://www.synthesizers.com/q109.html

I hope you didn't take my reply the wrong way. I wasn't trying to jab. It was just a strange and disconnected question.

  • i actually know my way around synths, i just like to know how it sounds, i dont know how my question is confusing to you.

  • Well then... as to 'how it sounds'... better than Moog... and it'll do low frequencies lower than you can hear. If ya mean 'big-n-ballsy'... oh hell yeah.

  • nice textures....

  • I'm glad you put this here, Morbius! I've always thought more people should see what it is that you do. Always makes me want to sell something and get a 960...
