He is actually originally Jason Bourne.He was a US Assassin back during the cold war.Bourne was chasing"Carlos the Jackal"in China and was supposedly killed.He then changed his identity to David Webb as a college professor living in Maine with his wife.

Actually, Jason Bourne was born David Webb, and became Jason Bourne after his wife and family were killed in Vietnam. If you want the whole story, I suggest you get the original novels by Robert Ludlum and read them. While the movies were excellent, I believe the books are much better, and well worth the read.
