Fugue is harder, first because it's a fugue, second according to abrsm prelude is grade 7 (although they expect about 75% speed), and the "prelude and fugue" is DipAbrsm, so you know how much the fugue is worth. Not saying it is easy though.
@platmosic the abrsm is all about social policing ... 'Oh, no, we can't have too many highly developed people out there, it will put second-rate teachers with third-rate pupils outta work!' No such thing as speed ! Every piece ACCORDS itself a pertinent tempo ! I am not gunna tell you anymore of my virtuoso secrets !
I actually think he's thinking Shostakovich when he is interpreting it. It's not wrong, but I love a lighter character BUT, if you look at this fugue in light of Shos G major P and F, it somehow works. That's why the flexibility of Bach cannot be underestimated.
"No" nuance is a pretty bold statement, and in this case it's simply wrong.
Children play without nuance... greats like this might simply not go far enough. If you think people don't "play Bach" anymore go make a case for it on an instrument, not in broad sweeping statements like that.
Richter can certainly play Bach but I have to agree with you that I don't think Richter's approach on this Prelude and Fugue is the best. Check out d minor, F# major, g minor and A flat major :)
I think Gould's version is "perfect" but not so beautiful like the Sviatoslav's one which is near cantabile. However Gould remains the best Bach's interpreter ang S. Richter MUST BE CONSIDERED the most complete pianist of the century!!
You could've used two more colors! The secondary theme (introduced in msr 5) and the secondary theme inverted (in modified form in msr 11, 20, 24, 28).
There is also a modified verion of the second theme that recurs (16, 31 without the intro measure).
In the measure where he used ORANGE to denote the subject, I believe he used that because Bach employed whats called Stretto (which is bringing in the subject whether inverted or not and then interruping the subject with *another* subject before the first has ended)
I just love ALL of these - Please try and complete the whole set VERY SOON - And thanks for all the very hard work you have put in to make these truly magical pieces become even more entertaining.
why are people do pedantic over bach? i think richter, my favourite pianist, manages to capture the nobility and elegance of this peice by playing stecatto and loud like bach intended, gould does this too. you have to emphasisie the left hand and right hands notes equally powerfully in order to create the majestic aura this peice gives. well temepered clavier really is a test of one's technical skills.
Right! I think Glenn Gould has been the best Bach's interpeter for sure but Richter is incredible. Every composer is not preclude for him!!!!!! Very Great pianist!!!!!
I marked it orange to show that it was another entry of the subject, but a VERY incomplete one, only two bars of the original four ones are there.
If you liked this one (yaay me happy :D) you should check out the a minor Prelude & Fugue I uploaded recently (you can find a link to it in the video description of this video)
yeah, whats the difference between the red-marked notes and the blue-marked notes? Theyre both the themes, right? WHat's the difference? answer plz :]

speed is a tricky thing because the faster ricther goes, the less i pick up as a listener.

The fugue (0:49....) is fantastic. Bach is truly the father of fugue.

Gould's version is constipated. Certainly he plays the notes, but there was not much more.
Richter plays like he is in a hurry. No nuance. To quote the retarded pop singer, David Bowie, it is all "Wham, bam, thank you man!"
What's the problem? Aren't there any performers that can play Bach any more?
TableLamp1963 2 years ago
... yea, how about you?

listen to Gulda's version. He plays it a reasonable tempo.

@TableLamp1963 It's "Wham-bam thank you ma'am!" It's T.S. Eliot, an it is you who is retarded.

Red marked notes: The subject
Blue marked notes: The subject inverted (played "upside-down")
Pianoplayer002 3 years ago
oh i get it...but you still have to emphasize them both anyways, i am correct?
Euclid34 3 years ago
You don't HAVE to, but Richter certainly does ;o I emphasized them with colours, but since they are different, I used different colours =)
