wonderful stuff - love the break à 1:40 - ending on a strange chord à 1:48 - that's why i love them - able to lead a powerful straight line, and taking a step aside when it might get a bit drab - but they sure never let that happen !...
also colburn has satomi crying, which reflects what i feel about her - she often looks a bit sad, which (i'm sorry to admit) charms me - most charming when she smiles in spite of some secret sorrow - radiant !

I hate it when people mistake half-assedry/incohesion for creativity. You could get the same effect by visiting a construction site...this shit is so disjointed it pains me to think of all the ignorant douchebags thumbing it up to make themselves feel cool. And dont tell me this band is tight...theyre not.
We like it because the drummer is very good. Pay close attention to his drumming and you will understand why we do not see this as being incohesive. Also, I enjoy that the singer's voice is not being accompanied by music. Rather, it is just another instrument for this band.
this band isn't even all that disjointed. this band is basically just rock 'n roll in all honesty when you strip it down.i would say try listening to something that's actually experimental but it wouldn't be something you'd enjoy anyway so don't worry about it. music is truly the lowest art form, because unlike visual arts where people can recognize abstraction as valid... in the world of sound it offends.
You know, All in all, I do have to agree with you. It is pretty disjointed...
Maybe people just like it like that. Who knows?
(Before anyone comes up to me and says, or rather types, "You don't know a fucking thing about music, bitch," Realise that I've taken up 3 different instruments at a grade 6 level, and GCSE music. So that argument's dead in the water.)
The disjointness is part of there style TAGMOMG , if you do or don't care for it's just personal taste-personally I like it to a point but I do wish they would ride out the killer groves a lot more ,It would kick there intensity up a notch-so I agree with you.Saw them live last year , every time that hit a killer grove they stopped and took a quick left, fun the first 3 times got annoying at the tenth. You would think they would kind of know that ,there all solid musicians.
Yeah, I'm guessing that they've learned to play differently, (They sound Japanese, at least to me, and I know that different conteries have different ways of learning music) And like you said it's just a matter of opinion.
The singer is Japanese, but I'm pretty sure the band members are Americans, though one of them looks Hispanic & has a Spanish-sounding name.
All their riffs & grooves are Western tradition (at least as far as contemporary popular music can be said to have a tradition). It's the way they string them together that's novel & disconcerting. It's definitely an acquired taste. As some people ask: "Then why bother?"
It's worth the bother because they'll be recognized as influential in the future.
Well, maybe the singer brought some japanese teachers. Seeing the singer is usualy the leader of a groop, Maybe she said something like "Play it like this, but string it together like this!"
And I'm not sure I can agree they're influential as of yet, as I've never heard of them.
You aren't expected to agree with what I didn't say. I predicted earlier that "they'll be recognized as influential in the future." Their influence (or lack of it) can't be confirmed for a long while yet, but you heard of them here, "bitch."
Check out their "Family of Others." It's really quite sublime.
Sorry folks, but this is indie music snob material at its purest. Its the kind of 'music'(read: noise) snobs have pound repeatedly into their heads over a long period of time before they 'like' it, in order to deceive themselves and brag to their faggot friends that they listen to a band no one's ever heard of. ya well I don't have any vids posted dumbass. And I reckon everyone is in a place to judge music, cause if it's not judged by everyone then you can't tell what's good or not. It's not that I don't like, deerhoof, I don't like what it stands for. The idea of mishmashing sounds and trying to create a sound that sounds "unrehearsed" is bs. It doesn't matter how original something is if it isn't melodically pleasing. I can be the first person in the world to have sex with a turtle but it doesn't make me any cooler or better of a person, originality does not always equal good. and what do I like? Bob Marley, The Beatles, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, Dispatch...
yes, fair point about the turtle! I love original and experimental music but I do agree with you, I believe a good melody should be the most important element in a song. To carry on our little debate i'm going to post a Deerhoof tune which I think might change your mind! Will let you know when it's up...
uhmm, are you listening to this music? Every one of their songs has a beautiful melody. You listen to Aerosmith, so you need to stfu before you look any dumber.
I think the girl who can't sing or play guitar well is what any hater is referring to. But its obvious she is there on purpose because the drumming is absolutely excellent. I love this song. Anyone know more songs similar to this?
AHAHA Then what is it? How else are songs created, just messing around until something sounds right then practicing it, probably is the only right way. You really should not be judging this because it's too different for you.
I'd also like to add that they don't "get together everyone play different random talentless crap, record it, call it a song etc." I just bought a book of the sheet music for Offend Maggie and got to talk to Greg last night. All their music is tightly composed. They don't just randomly play notes together. Whenever they're working on a record, each member brings in music, and they go through a process of developing it. (cont.)

these people are talented as hell, but their music is boring. it's not experimental, it's derivative. and that's fine, except when you try so hard to be wacky! and crazy! and new! when it's really just pop music with an extra gimmick (crazy japanese girl vocals! wacky art music video! they're SUPPOSED to sound unrehearsed, yet polished!) being weird on purpose, call it experiemental, whatever, it's just so pathetic and uncreative. i guess that's why my band will never play the knitting factory.

Well, you can't fault the BAND for the video. I'm not sure what "talented as hell" means, in that case. Technically proficient? A big part of why I like Deerhoof is their ability to balance their more outre aspects with a really accessible pop style (and I don't think ANYONE would call them a "pop" group). I love great experimental music, but it's not that hard to make music that no-one likes, ya know?
you know puncrocks, it's funny you should judge this band for, of all things, not being unique or creative. Punk involves, what, power chords and maybe the occasional major chord? oh and it's not self-indulgent like other passe types of rock and roll, right? correct me if i'm wrong, but punk rock hasn't resembled anything remotely unique or creative since the early 80's. oh and guess what, Deerhoof is better than your band will ever be.

If you look at the album credits, the group has no express leader. They're very egalitarian, so I think the music progresses through consensus.
Whether or not they become popular is not a measure of influence. Joy Division never became popular but is immensely influential.
