So we don't get to hear Al's parodies that the artist didn't like or wouldn't let him do. If Al wants to put any parody on a CD to sell it, he is REQUIRED BY LAW to obtain permission first from whoever owns the rights to the song...whether that be the songwriter, the record company, etc., otherwise he can be sued by them. However, if it is not being used in a commercial manner, it's acceptable. Same reason why you can sing the Happy Birthday song without being sued, but you never see anyone sing it on TV because the network has to pay royalties.
