Lasse Hoile must wake up each day saying "what little known great band can I shoot today?". The guy is amazing - though this is pretty low budget. Check out his direction on "Way Out of Here' from Porcupine Tree's live DVD. It's perfection in every way.
hmmm sounds very much like porcupine tree's stuff i must say anything that's similar to porcupine tree is a step in the right direction...much love for mr wilson and the rest of the gang ! :)
To all those who do not consider The Pineapple Thief a progressive band: Why do you even bother? Personally, I'd refer this to as experimental british music with beautiful acoustic guitars. Now, if you call that progressive or not, well quite frankly nobody could care less. Every band should have its own unique sound and they totally do. And if you're not convinced by this song, maybe listen to other songs, e.g. Remember us, before prejudicing and starting an utterly unnecessary discussion.
These guys seem more like Poets Of The Fall than Coldplay, these guys came up on my POTF pandora playlist. If you don't know them check them out, amazing band, but why are we comparing bands anyway? No one is the same
@HATECREWrulz123 Coldplay's first album was really good. Then they gradually got worse... and "viva la vida" is something outrageous. But "Parachutes" is still a great album in my opinion. Listen to it. You'll be surprised.
KScope's slogan (or something) is 'Post-Progressive sounds'. So this isn't exactly 'Prog' but 'Post-Prog' if you look at it in that way. It's definitely influenced by the Prog movement, but it's their own sound.
And re: SlimZeppelin - Good point raised. Genesis we all know is Prog, but 'Horizons' is a piece of classical music. And Yes' 'Owner of a lonely Heart' is a pop classic. Variation into different areas is a good thing.
its that they sound like prog bands from decades ago, but what those prog bands were doing hadn't been done decades before then, so essentially, just because this is in 7/8 time and has an non-pop music progression doesn't really make it progressive in the way that floyd for example was when they were first playing psychedelic ufo clubs
Listen to the album version, this version here is crap.
Unusual structure, odd time signatures, weird style of riffing plus combination of many genres ...
Some people say, it's Porcupine Tree, some say it's Radiohead. There you go, Radiohead does not sound like Porcupine Tree at all and here is one band mixing different styles together, finding there own one. Just evolution, progression in...progress ;)
This isn't progressive in my opinion. There is no sense of "Progression" or even experimentation. I don't even understand why there is a progressive argument on this particular song, since there's not even any sense of progressiveness... It's almost pure indie rock.
Progressive is over thinking every little detail until it's perfect. If you just lay out some riff off the top of your head and don't refine it, someone's already done it. Come to think of it, if you can say "it's like radiohead meets pink floyd," that band isn't really doing anything progressive, they're just emulating those bands--which is what gave us the terrible shitpile we call popular music. "Hey guys! Let's just follow a set formula. I-IV-V 4/4, 6/8?" "sounds good!"
Genre arguments are soooooooo gay. To those of you involved: You're all a bunch of progressive ball lickers! That is, you don't lick balls in the classical sense (like ur mums), you really get into it and jam out on balls and add a lot of variations to your relentless licking of them.
First of all, they're british, second of all, they're actually showing some sort of artistic credibility, which they have.
The whole point of progressive rock is to show how much further you can expand your sense of music, and truly make it musical. For instance, classical music has no set pattern or chord rhythm, only a set base tones and tonics, and what not.
A lot of classic rock wouldn't be considered "special" due to their chords being constant and mundane.
Well porcupine tree has been named as progressive rock and this is more progresive than 50% of their works. And one can't name the criteria to progressive music nowadays, it was more easy back in 60s and 70s when they didn't have those jazz-neo-third wave fusion titles :D
Exactly. Prog nowadays is so much more than Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd. It runs all the way from Opeth or Mastodon to meshugga to this. "Prog" is like "rock", there's so much more to it.
Easily, this is just one song, maybe not so progressive, you just need listen more. And even this song originaly is not 3:12 but 4:12 and sounds differently. This one is just adopted for masses, I think
progressive mean there's a lot of variations in a song... there's different type of progressive but its always about bringing together many different part that doesn't have the same aspect at all in the same song.
This´d be a wicked amateur video, but as an official video... I mean, isn´t it supposed to be made by the guy who did Opeth and Dream Theater? What was he, handing his duty to his 10 year-old prodigy son?
Oh, and the guy in the video looks like Gavin Harrison

To me, this is prog. How dare you invalidate my opinion.
AragornIsStrider 2 years ago
I understand the band has some prog elements, but this song shows none of those.
SimZeppelin 2 years ago
You mean, "in my definition of prog."
My ideal of prog is quite far-reaching.
If you like "classic prog" done by newer bands, I'd recommend the Flower Kings or Spock's Beard.

Well it's mostly in 7/8 time signature... kind of invalidates your statement.
