If Radon has a half life of 3 days, that's not the problem. The problem is that some other Uranium (et. al) may be present to create the Radon off gas. problem. That was the missing comment in this video. I do believe your work is needed at this time, and I would love to use clips of your testing in some of my videos. my site is mythhealer
hmm, as the radon gets absorbed by the coal, wouldn't t be a good idea to keep permanent dishes of coal around in areas where i my keep radioactive minerals?
maybe this way i can reduce the amount of radon in the air, even though most of it is in sealed cases, i wouldn't call every case really airtight!
1.2 what? 1.2 microsievert/hour? on coal? where was the coal placed? or did you measure the aequivalent dose in open air?
well, 1.2 microsievert/hour are not that much; it's not going to cause you acute radiation sickness or anything. however, they say ANY exposure to radon does increase your risk for cancer. like, people in saxony / germany have a higher incidence of lung cancer than people in hamburg, due to more radon being around. i have no idea about legal stuff though.
@bionerd23 I'd imagine it would be 1.2 pCi/L (picoCuries per litre of air). pCi/L is the standard unit used on home radiation test results here in the US, but I'm not sure about other countries. Also, I highly doubt one could break a lease at this level, as the US EPA has set an "action limit" of 4 pCi/L.
Godness mine woah , you dont fear from cancer? Why was you put in coal the radioactive stuff, coal can store the radiation?! and not at least was you all wtches from grandpa trow against the wall , or how was you become so many lil watc hand (:
yes, radon - the radioactive noble gas within the decay chain - distributes within the coal, and the daughternuclides become "trapped" within the coal.
@bionerd23 Do you think maybie some light radioactive stuff can work as cold catalisator? I mean in home maded vacum discarc tube (spark gap tube), cause that matreial emitt radon , and that make more easly conductive the air , I mean fill the vacum expect air. Sorry for my bad english , I hope trough all Im undersandable.
i'm not sure what the question is, but some electronics components still do use radioactive material nowadays, to do exactly what you said; ionize the air and help current to flow.
Are you insane? radon and radium are know carcinogens, what the hell are you doing messing around with that stuff? don't be surprised if you get cancer very soon
Don't use your best sample! Just a small piece, say 30g, crushed to a fine powder would be enough. Radon is also attracted to grease and rubber - not enough experiments have been done on this - maybe rubber-backed carpets are a good idea after all??
aw, but i love all of them... oh well, i'll think about it. i have all that nitric, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acid sitting around, doing nothing with it, too, so... i suppose i'll have to, at some point.
If you crushed some of the uranium ore to increase the surface area of the particles, your radon emanation would be increased, maybe even more than the radium watch hands gave. Try it!
nah, all of that would be far from dangerous. take a nuclear medicine exam, for example - the patient receives injections that are radioactive with MILLIONS OF COUNTS - per SECOND!
That was Awesome! I'm going to have to try that tomorrow! I'll let you know if it was a success! I have 10g of pure granular Pitchblende (Uraninite, UO2) in a glass vial (which I can open), so that should work well! I have some Radium switches too, but they have glass over the beads in the switch tips, but I will try that too! Radium-226 is the most abundant, and decays to Radon-222! I hope I can get the Radium switches to work! Incredible! 5/5! Keep up the experiments! Have a Happy New Year!
the pitchblende should work just fine, there's enough radon being emitted when in the natural isotope mix - but sure, radium would make for a good control group.
How can I filter radioactive stuff from the air? Do you know how to make that type of system like for a bomb shelter or fallout shelter or something like that? If you can help me out I'll greatly appreciate the help, thanks.
so wait, if you were testing for radioactivity, why did you put coal near radioactive samples and then test the coal with a geiger counter? why wouldn't you just put the geiger counter near something radioactive?
Yes, it's easy to forget that the uranium ore which is a rock will actually 'produce' radon...however it's rate of radon production is much lower than that of the radium watch hands.
Since much more radon is produced in the same time span by the radium than by the uranium the coal absorbs more.
The coal itself slowly become more radioactive as it absorbs more radon...
This is a great easy method of 'seeing' radon. Well done!
kommt drauf an... wenn man nicht vor dem regal rumsteht und alles abgeschirmt ist, mitunter ganz normale hintergrundstrahlung von 0.2 uSv/h. ohne abschirmung -> siehe video "my irradiated room".
Wow i didn't know you could manufacture radon. Where i live in the mountains of northern Georgia in the US we have huge problems with radon gas sepage. You can take a counter to these vents though out the mountain that EPA put in to try to vent the radon out, and the counter will goes nuts with in 10 feet.
i live near atlanta and the nuke plant in cartersvill and i allwas keep a gamma scout on me when i go camping and what not because were arround the nuke plant a fair amount but we keep our distance to avoid radiation and getting arrested lol
yeah, i thought that was a possibility at first, too. but, as you can see in my follow-up videos, the measured radiation decreases to background radiation within a few hours. this proves that the measured radiation levels were due to the short-lived daughter nuclides of radium, not radium itself - if radium had rubbed off on the coal, the radiation would not noticably decrease within just a few hours, as radium has a half-time of 1500 years.
try putting one on the floor, since radon sinks, being 30% denser than sulfur hexafluoride(which you can actually float balloons and foil boats in), you may get a higher reading. Another way to check for radon close to the ground: put the dosimeter up to your cat.
yeah, might be a good idea - i dont know if the results will be different enough though. if you had a lot of radon in the environment, possibly... but with 'normal' radon levels, that is rather unlikely. might be worth a try, though!
lol about the cat... yeah, same goes for the dust on my TV. :)
Way cool! And worrisome for people with radium/uranium collections! At least this test easier and cheaper than those mail-order type radon tests, although it might not be as quantitative, and requires a good GM meter. Looking forward to the other parts!
yeah, i hope people will copy the experiment. one has to know that its required to have a geiger mueller counter that can measure alpha radiation as well as beta and gamma though, if they want accurate results like i got in the video.
Is it safe to handle that uranium ore like that with bare hands?
BalazarsBrain 8 months ago
Could I do this experiment with my geiger counter which can only detect Beta and Alpha radiation?
