@Mike1245690, you seem to have a slightly dusty understanding of Bach, going back to the common 19th century misunderstanding and misrepresentation of his music. Bach was, in his time, a wild-card and very dynamic kind of guy, who did love to break with common baroque tradition all the time, unless he was restrained by his work for the church - and even then...He had a lot of enemies and was repeatedly violently and physically attacked.
@bababamoto no it isn't, it sounds rushed, back in the day they would have played it way slower, but nobody cares now, those rules are long time gone, broken after bach's death.
We are favored to live in these times when we can enjoy such performances on YouTube! Many thanks to the talented musicians who played for this recording so the rest of us can enjoy it!
@BStewart27 that isn't a recorder, that is a transverse flute, and it remains unchanged today from when it was in use in Bach's time IF you buy the very expensive handmade ones.
@michaellangston53 Sorry, it's definitely a recorder, alto in F; transverse flute is blown sideways across a hole. Brandenburg #2 and #4 call for recorders. Transverse flute is in #5, and was beginning to eclipse the recorder due to being louder and favored by Frederick the Great and other composers and patrons. This instrument appears to have some unusual keys; most altos are not keyed.
@samvall - It's a piccolo trumpet in C. Most people that play Brandenburg 2 on a picc play it on B-flat picc. Fairly rare to see performed on C picc, but Reinhold could probably play it on a garden hose! =)
Aaah, at last a version that pleases my ears. It is a very difficult piece... I was looking for this because it's the 1st song on the Golden Record of the Voyager satelites :) Wanted to know what the Aliens get to hear :D
My god, this divine performance nearly makes me a believer in a higher power (says a nonbeliever!). And as a trumpeter, I can only witness, in awe, Reinhold's mastery of the instrument. All these magnificent musicians work seamlessly together to create truly breathtaking music. Of course, were we not blessed with Bach's composition 300 years ago, none of what I said would matter. Praise JS!
Without question the interpretation of this piece i´ve ever heard. I love the relatively fast tempo, dynamics and overall feel. Pluss, Friedrich is totally insane making that trumpet sound like it was the simplest thing to play in the world. He lauhgs at Maurice Andre any day...
My favorite performance of the Brandenburg Concerto ever, Claudio Abbado is a wonderful and talented conductor, and the Orchestra Mozart just feed of his passion and energy..... I will not see another performance of this standard in my lifetime.
@Csboots68 I think you are referring to the recorder. Are you using the older terminology? During this Baroque period a recorder was referred to as a flute.
@MichaelAndyDodds Yup. The piano was not invented back then, and neither was the organ, although the organ was invented in Bach's time. I think Domenico Scarlatti (another Baroque composer, earlier than Bach) used the Harpsichord as his signature.
Fantastic version, Excelent work to the master Abbado.
congratulations, I like a lot off the use to one modern alt recorder. is a perfect election for this version. wanderfull

I simply adore this piece. It's just so live! I haven't performed it with a group such as this but I actually have with a brass quintet in which I performed with my piccolo trumpet. It was amazing.
the natural trumpets of the baroque era were too difficult to use on the virtuosic parts in these concertos, thats probably why he is using a valved instrument.
original natural horns depended on the overtone series. to facilitate melodic lines trumpet parts had to be written in the high register where the overtone series pushes notes very close to each other, this was unneccessary when valves came along since you could paly chromatic on one horn. this is why baroque parts are so high. and modern trumpets are just easier to find and more dependable, as if that makes it any easier, he is already palying in the high range of the small horn.
It's really amazing to tell the world you play with historical instruments with this orchestra and then find reinhold friedrich with a piccolo and the oboe player also with a modern instrument.
I mean they play really good, but they should really not tell anybody that they play historical!
players are great, but stupid tempo from Abbado! Bach never looked for "virtuosismo"... nowadays they think that faster tempos sounds better,,,, just stupid!
violinists suck with no technique at all whatsoever???...wooow...we have an intellectual here with this comment...
Well...besides that I found quite weird the mix of modern and period instruments...however they play all with the same taste...I found it very nice...and otherwise, it seems that nobody looks poor Abbado...
Though I don't see any problems here, the violin is actually an instrument that strongly relies on technique. Many instruments have been transposed out of concert pitch to make them easier to play in odd keys but violinist have to come up with techniques to play in obscure lets say g flat (the fiddle is technically in g). Also a TON of techinque goes in to bow strokes and making clean shifts with the hand with out making a sliding sound. If they had bad technique it wouldnt sound like music.
I'm working on this piece in my free time (which is mostly during the summer) on the recorder but I'm still struggling with some parts, (at 1:20, 2:45 for example) but I hope one day I can play it almost as beautifully as professionals. The recorder is soooo underestimated!
Lower instruments sound a little bit distortionated, it might be because of the quality of the sound traks, but the players are amazing, bravo, if there are other words to describe this please tell me
Breathtaking! My spirit is soaring! I adore Lucas Macias Navarro......

Sorry, I know a recorder is technically a kind of flute, but I still find it jarring whenever somebody refers to that part as a "flute" part.
In either case, great stuff. Thanks, Bach, for being infinitely satisfying.
