I finally realised why I could never get the sound effects working on XP and it "only" took me 8 years to find out why!

You MUST run the game via the autorun menu (WORMLOAD.EXE) - no need to set any compatibility mode as XP has some internal fixes. If you start WORM.EXE directly then the fixes aren't automatically applied and sound effects don't work, even if you set compatibility mode manually.

BTW I have the "bargain bin" version.

The sound always ran perfectly for me when running the game, no matter the version of Windows. Until I started using XP the glich where the sound stops working when encountering the 1 ups, finishing Andy Asteroids, etc. That would be a glitch.

The version I have is the original version with the big ass box.

Either way, doesn't matter now. I have the Sega CD version. No glitches or compatablity issues there. :)

Yeah mine is the same as yours now, the sound occasionally drops out. It was always perfect on Windows 95/98/ME, just XP gave me grief. I remembered playing it on Windows 95 with a 66 MHz 486 and it ran perfect. I now have EWJ for the SNES but it's not the same.

There are two EWJ games for the PC. EWJ for Windows 95 (this one), and EWJ1&2 The Whole Can of Worms for DOS. I have both. The ones you download from Steam or GOG are is DOS one.

This is the Windows 95 version. All of the options (controls, level select, sound options) are in the window menu. The game doesn't install (besides a small config file that goes into the root of the c drive), it autoplays off of the cd.

EWJ1&2 have each game on seperate discs. They have to be installed. The options are in a setup program and the controls are in the main menu of the game.

Yeah, it sucks. Activision's support is useless too. Don't even bother. The support they give actually helps those with a pirated copy of the game (since it's less compatible), but it doesn't actually help those who actually bought the game.

They actually had me changing my color mode on my computer and expected it to fix a sound problem. Idiots.

I have this, and there's one other glitch. Sometimes, the colours in the backrounds are inverted, and the only way I know how to fix them is by dying. Do you know how to fix this? I really love this game...

It always works, on every version of Windows. I pop in the cd, and it loads up every time. It just stops working when it plays certain sounds until I disable then enable sound.

However, I heard the sound problem is a problem with pirated versions.

Yes. There is none. This game runs directly from the cd. All it does is puts a config/save file on the root of drive c.

The weird color thing only happened to me twice when loading a random level. The sound works so it's not a compatibility problem.

The sound just stops working when playing certain sound effects like the one up sound, the victory/lose song on Andy Asteroids and when a cow moos when it goes flying by (not the first cow sound). It fixes itself if you turn the sound off then on.

So it's like it's a bug with the game. But it never happened on previous windows versions.

Just a note about the sound, I've played this game on XP and never had problems with the sound. Maybe it's a device or driver specific problem?

It's always worked for me. On multiple computers, with different versions of Windows. Only Windows XP has the glitch where picking up a life or finishing Andy Asteroids stops the sound until you re-enable it.

Then it's a broken version. Ripped games tend to have stuff taken out, like important files that make the game compatible with different computers.

I have no doubt that the sound is there in your game, but without every file the original cd had, you can't guarantee that it'll work like it's supposed to. You might have to fiddle with it.

One of the reasons why I hate piracy. The games aren't accurate. Other reasons is disrepect to the makers, and not having a physical copy of a product you use.

From what I can tell only the warez copy has this problem with the sound not working. So can't help you.

The only glitch I have it sounds stopping after picking up a free life or beating Andy Asteroids. But that's only in XP.

Besides, you can find the game in bargain bins everywhere.

Look for WGens. Some sounds don't play properly when emulating the Sega CD version, they come out as a buzzing sound.

This video, however, is of the Windows 95 port of Earthworm Jim Special Edition. It has more colors, and lower load times.

FYI this EWJ special edition first appeared on sega cd and features remixed soundtrack, cd quality sound, extended levels,and updated graphics. later it was ported to pc as u see here but suffers from some technical issues as u saw in the vid.

Just always has. Besides the whole sound stopping working when playing certain sound effects (which you see me get working by turning the sound off then on again) it works perfect. On different computers, on different versions of XP (Pro and Home).

I think it might have to do with the version of the game. I have the one that originally came in the big box, not just the jewel case with the AOL crap on it (which is much more common).
