  • Dave have you been playing these things for a year now maybe? You suck

  • I took nothing you said as a knack. I played the piece without listening to mark ford play it on his cd, so that would explain the speed that frank and I play it at. Where do you go to school? I look forward to watchin some of your recital!

  • @haydengf I am finishing up my degree at the University of Iowa. I just have student teaching next semester and then I am done. I should be putting some videos up later today. Never done it before but hopefully I can get it to work. Look forward to your comments!

  • One last thing (I wish I could have put this all in one comment). I just finished my senior recital this past weekend, and will be posting a video of this piece as well as others fairly soon. As my performance is far from flawless and probably much more ridden with wrong notes than your performance, I would love to hear what you think of my performance as well. As musicians, I feel it very necessary to share these types of comments with each other. Keep up the good work and take care!

  • However, while every musician has the right to do essentially whatever they want with any piece of music, and while I am never a slave to tempo markings, it is my personal opinion that a lot is lost in this particular piece if it is taken too fast, especially considering that blazing fast was not the composer's intention. (Listen to a clip of Mark Ford's personal rendition of this piece here, or buy his cd). Once again, please do not take this as a knock on your abilities as a performer.

  • Hey man, it's very clear that you have great technical and musical chops (better than what i have achieved at this point for sure), so please don't mistake this as a knock on that. You mentioned that Frank Gonzales changed some things for the sake of competition. Aside from rearranging/cutting some things out, he also sped the tempo up a ridiculous amount when compared to the written tempos. If this was also your intention, more power to you and ignore everything I am saying.

  • Forgive me for being oblivious, but it sounds like you repeated some sections weren't written. Would I be right or is Frank Gonzales' arrangement wrong?

  • Ya I got inspired to play this piece when I saw Frank Gonzales play it on youtube, but when I ordered the piece of SteveWeiss I found it's much longer than what Gonzales does. I think he probably shortened because it was part of a competition. It's pretty wild though, there some spots he totally skips, but no doubt his performance was exceptional

  • Interesting. Also, it looks like you only have a 4.3 octave? Did you have to rewrite some parts to play them on a lower octave?

  • @TheConcealedBagel Yeah my school unfortunately does not have the best equipment. There's a ton of transposing up and down octaves, you may even be able to notice from some awkward movements, but I just really wanted to play the piece. Everything I couldn't play was too low, so I play them usually an octave higher. I also had to make some changes to the original score to cope with this.

  • @TheConcealedBagel were you looking to learn this piece?

  • Actually, yes! I'm still a beginner at 4 mallets, but I hope to be able to play this soon enough, at least in time for Solo & Ensemble competition next year.

  • Pretty good, but that board is so low, it's killing me!
