If I truly had a choice of Derek Sherinian, Jordan Rudess or Kevin Moore to be playing in Dream Theater I would choose Kevin. I like the sound of his keyboards better and his style of composition. When I listen to DT I have to get used to Jordan's sound. Which is hard sometimes.
KM can really wake up inner feeling with his songs, sometimes I really feel like he wanna share some melancholy with us...this song deserve a great video...
This song does sound this way on the album. The production is very different than DT's (which is a large part of what I like about Chroma Key in general), it's very moody and organic.
i like DT, and CK, I miss Kevin in some ways, but i like Rudess in others.....This song is one of my personal favorites. I think the only problem with chroma keys success is the maketability. The best market outlet this has is the fact that he was the old keys for DT...im still giving kevin much credit for his role here, but it's sadly not near as successful as DT. I wish it was
People should STOP now with the whole DT/KM/JR arguement. Music it's not a competition, let's leave that to sports. Kevin Moore left DT, so be it, just leave it there and appreciate the music he is making. If you don't like it, listen to something else.
ok mr rudess is a very impressive and talented musician and looks a good person too.His skills are extraordinary and well i think he is years ahead of mr.moore in technique and generally in his piano skill. But ok i strongly believe that mr moore is years ahead in composing and musicianship. His music either with DT or solo is very emotional and well written something that mr jordan cant always acomplish with his compositions.
hmm, too different people i gues, i realy respect both players, Kevin's stuff seems alot more emotional and heartey, i mean space dye vest......where as i think Jordan is sorta the "shredder" on the keys, he knows he can play tremendously and i think he uses that in his writing
Kevin Moore has something Dream Theater hasn't had in forever: genuine soul. When he left something was lost that they haven't been able to replace since.
Technically brilliant player but his song writing skills are extraordinary. Such a talent. I don't believe he gets the credit he deserves, potentially because since DT his work has been predominantly 'project' work. As is his wish, I think.
Proof that not everyone's replaceable. Kevin Moore was the musical life blood of Dream Theater. I find all post Kevin Moore DT unlistenable. Chroma Key is truly great stuff.
I do love the later dream theater albums (Six Degrees is my all-time favorite), but I do agree Kevin Moore is the best DT keyboardist and that Jordan Rudess is terrible for the band's dynamic. Moore was also one of the best DT lyricists, no doubt.
Still, revisit some of the later DT albums; I'm sure you'll find something you like it.
I think that every keyboardist has brought something incredible to the band, but I also agree that I enjoy the Moore era better. His stuff is more emotional while rudesses is just skillfully and technically impressive. Not all of rudess' stuff is horrible though, he has a great section of dream theater classics. Where would be wall be without the song 'octavarium' or the ENTIRE Metropolis Pt.2 Album? Metropolis is my favorite album of all time, but I understand your reasoning
I'm sorry you feel that way about Six Degrees, but I'll have to disagree with you on the subject of authenticity.
Given that Portnoy and Petrucci were always the songwriting nucleus, it's their presence that dictates genuine DT. I'm not saying Moore wasn't a great musician and an amazing lyricist, but come one, he wasn't the essence of Dream Theater.
Read the liner notes for Images and Words and then tell me who was writing their songs. Moore wrote a lot of that record, including Pull Me Under. Portnoy didn't get into the writing/producing until later.
For lyrics, yes. But musically, the tracks are all credited as "Dream Theater," and Portnoy, even back then, functioned somewhat as an artistic director.
I thought Six Degrees was DT's last great album. After that they lost their lyrical creativity and poetic nature and went more for kickass instrumentation. I really blame it on Rudess though, ever since he came in DT started caring more about long instrumentals and speedy solos than anything else.
that's an interesting point. I find Rudess to be extremely talented and i love his solo music, but he doesnt seem to bring to many 'riffs' into dream theater that i find really unique (for example, the erotomania intro) and like you said he just focuses on being a speed machine in DT, especially on BC&SL.
I won't put the guy down, he is a great keyboardist, but he just doesn't have that artistic edge that Moore had. Every now and then he has some really great lines, Forsaken for example or the last few minutes of Count of Tuscany. But he doesn't contribute lyrics, and I'm getting tired of the silly speedy sounds he makes during songs, Rite of Passage for example in my opinion his solo didn't fit. I personally think DT needs a fresh keyboardist and needs to start being a little more inspired.
yeah exactly, I really think DT should turn away from that "rite of passage solo direction". Rather than having a progressive direction, the solos just speed up, mess around with outrageous keyboard effects, and in my opinion just form a mess! no emotion in it!
Yeah I know right? I can agree with that, I mean songs can just go so well and be powerful and emotional and then Rudess just comes in and does silly sound effects that sound like they belong on a DragonForce song. Derek should be brought back, he's not Moore but he still kept that emotion and DT wasn't going all nuts instrumentals.
The only really good thing about that album was the song itself, they sounded too much like U2 in the lighter songs, and too much like Muse in the heavier ones especially Never Enough. It was a good album but not even close to their best.
I'd add that TOT was great pedal to the metal album. A bit long songs, but SOC is a great instrumental, Honor Thy Father is just purely rocking, and In The Name Of The God has one of the best religious themed lyrics ever.
I agree TOT was good but lyrically I thought that was when DT started to decline, it had some shining moments but songs like As I Am were far too angsty and more like something Linkin Park would write.
Kevin Moores lyrics are beautiful, I just wish he hadn't left Dream Theater. They could have used some emotion in their lyrics as well as in their music.
Amazing song by amazing musician (Kevin Moore)Just listen to the drums (Mark Zonder is one of the best drummers ever, any style) They work as heartbeats! Fantastic feeling.
Yes, It is! I consider the rhythm section essential to enhance the beauty of any instrument on top of it. I love the rhythm section for its own sake though.
