Take a look at the 2nd Edition stuff. They had a great formula back then for making armies. You had 100x the options to build up forces. Granted that there were some loopholes here and there that allowed some unbalanced armies, but it was a lot more fun than anything that has come out since.
I wish they had just fixed the few issues that were in 2nd edition rather than ruining the game with the horrible changes that have come in every edition since.
Codex Creep is a problem, and I agree they should even them out. But what is so powerful about a medusa or manticore? Really? Seems some of that lack of strategizing is due to Tourny play and not fun play. Or competitive play. Mathhammer is part of the problem in my opinion.
I think we're close to seeing eye to eye here, and I have fully enjoyed our discussion about it. I'm still interested in seeing how someone is going to run a decent IG list minus the old Imperial Armor additions (which coupled with 3 point guardsmen are the codex creep of the new codex).
What you just said is why codex escalation happens so frequently. As the legacy codex gets left in the dust, people start pushing GW for more. Instead of making the codexes even they jump over all codexes to create the next iteration. My biggest gripe right now with the IG is the strength 10 melta round, making land raiders effectively 250+ point pieces of junk.
Imperial armor was written by Forgeworld to garner some sales for their overpriced apoc only nonsense.
They wrote these books with a preface that said you can take these things in a standard game if your opponent allowed. No one in their right mind (who wanted a fair game) thought to say yes. But now, GW has included these vehicles into the IG codex.
I completely agree with you, the old IG codex could still throw down with the other codexes. If GW had allowed platoons to count as 1 kill point, IG could have been deadly in annihilation missions (the only achillies heel of the old IG codex).
To take the new IG codex and discover tactics that avoid using the indirect ubber powered melta gun from afar. THAT is impressive.
Just look at the leaf blower list that took the GT. Nothing could touch it. People's ability to "strategize" is now in the generation of their list, not their command presence on the table.
The Leaf Blower list wasnt a "Pure" Guard list. He was using Deamonhunter allies. I competed in Ard Boyz with mech heavy guard list, standard metla vets etc.
I placed third out of 12 people and could have gone on to round 2. I won 2 games and lost my first. The game I lost, was a player who ran a Bike Heavy Marine List. Something like 20 Bikes. It was nasty.
i just miss the day when GW made the game and rules for "casual" gamers and not cattering to the TOURNEY crowd. I also miss the codexs' that let you build your army based on what you wanted..instead of "WHAT IS TO BE TAKEN" i.e. the god dang characters, i cant stand them, never used them...and am slightly angry that GW is making the characters more of a must than the basic generic HQ choices. I dont feel like taking the grand marshall or calgar every time i play, sigh, thats why i moved to Fantasy.
well, I didn't try to assume every piece of the old IG puzzle here. Agreed the points for the old chimera were not in-line with the capabilities of it. But I deal with that in the BT codex as well.... why does my LRC cost me 265 points? My chapter designed the freaking thing. Not a huge complaint though. If GW would finally get on the ball and even the playing field (in a way that doesn't make me feel like I have to prep for a small apoc game everytime I want to play) we'd be good.
Okay Dore, I have a question, its not a rule you get wrong how ever, Dawn of War scenario, Im rolling on with Blood angels, I say okay im going to attempt to activate the over charged boosters, i roll a 1, IE The rhino just stalled, do i go on, or do i stay in reservers? do i crash? O.o
that fluff40k thing sounds goood, im trying to make my crimson fists as close to their fluff as possible. though considering its an army made up mainly of elites and scouts and the only tanks they tend to use are land raiders its turning out to be a bit expensive.
yes, the Pathfinder RPG. Doing a bit of a tutorial... you'll probably find the series a little on the basic side because I'm starting from the view point of someone who hasn't played any RPGs.

Broken Forge World stuff? Like what? The Valk? the Manticore? The Medusa?
The IG players suffered with a crap codex for years and still could hold it down. This is a great codex and is pretty tight.
I would like to hear your opinion on this matter.

Characters were way worse in second edition. I dont run characters in most of my lists.

The old chimera was a piece of overpriced garbage.
Doctrines are what made the old dex. Things now are more interesting, so may different ways to run your list.
