I am trying to figure out how to make a spherical minaudiere. Does anyone know how to make a hollow ball sturdy enough to use as a handbag or eyeglass case that isn't made out of wood?
Thank you for posting you are an exeptional craftsman I once turned a brass teardrop it posed similar problems to this but I think your work is much better.
@GOUPIL6060 Si vous publiez en anglais et lui demander im sûr qu'il va te faire et vous les vendre. He asked where can you buy balls like these in 25 cm diameter. I said. If you post in english and ask him im sure he can make you some and sell them to you.
Really cool video, your dad seems to be a very talented and creative guy. I find the title of the video a little misleading though, I am a woodturner and I have made many wooden balls but the technique is completely different with a normal lathe. I looks like your dad has made some kind of radial tool guide that clamps to his lathe, I think that it would be very helpful to show the design of this along with your video as it is impossible to follow his technique without this custom tool guide.
Nice work:) Last year i have done 15 balls (4 inchs) with free hand (i had negative(?) model from wood). It was terrible:) With this tool my work would be much easier.
@h333333333h yea it is, that was the first thing that came to mind, I'm pretty sure this is the original song, Kurk Hammett was influenced by a lot of orchestra music. The song is Nothing Else Matters, I'm not sure if that was the origonal name or not...
I am a woodturner hobbyist; about 35 years ago I designed my own ball turning attachment. I had a Teacher by corespondence , Mr F.Pain. He must be dead by now; can anybody put me in touch with a relation of his? Aynone reading this interested ; please contact me. Later I hope to post the sketch for the attachment. rmmnet
@jesustm6 wow im not going to thumbs up this comment, although i would like to, just because it has 45 thumbs up and you said your father made it 45 years ago
It is very nice & all but it would take some real skill to use hand tools insteadead of doing it w/ a jigging tool like that. But good work none the less.
have you tried using various woods together and then shaping it. I have been to various parts of Mexico for wooden pieces to purchase and have had to really keep them from cracking them once they are back in the U.S.
It would be really cool if that artillery shell at the end, were hollowed out and the wooden bullet just sat inside the wooden jacket, kinda of a nice hiding spot for chocolates,or keys,or change,or anything you wanted to stash.
@8thinpigs you could do something really cool by hollowing out the ball and cutting it in half precisely so it doesent look like it comes apart and put your keys in there
