As for me, the best version is Roberta Flack's. Celine Dion's version has cut these three lines at the end of the song:

So that's why I will always prefer Roberta Flack's version.

I listened to Matt Cardle's version and was cringing almost the whole time through. Anybody who liked his rendition must've been thrown off by his looks or something. What, you got the hots for the guy so bad you couldn't tell this song was out of his league? Celine has problems with the S's, and to me that spoilts the effect, sorry. If you make a living out of singing it is important that you can pronounce every letter properly. I like Leona's version in Divas, which is also the one sang by Matt Cardle, so the merit for this version is not his. Not sure who made this version, but it is very good. The best is still the original by Roberta Flack. Unfortunately she, as many other great singers, wouldn't have a chance with today's silly young voters.

Roberta Flack is not the original singer of this song. I think it was Peggy Seegar, Pete Seegar's sister.  The song was written by her husband for/about her. No disrespect but this is the only song ever that every cover has been an improvement. Problem with the original was largely the tempo.

The problem with Seeger's original was that Seeger had a HORRID voice, which was emphasized by the odd chord and tempo changes that Ewan wrote into the original version. One of the very few singers who can successfully sing this in its original chord and tempo is Joan Baez. I agree, every cover has been an improvement over Seeger's.
