Weren't there two preceding parts to this? I believe in the first one, they were introducing the shapes. I don't remember what went on in the second part that lead up to the one in this video.
I found two other parts to this; they're on one of the Hawaii episodes (e. 1090 perhaps). But I'm still of the mind that there was even one more part, making it 4 total.
Isn't it funny how the simplest of concepts can bring back such a vivid memory. I remember watching this when I was a kid, too, and even though this is so simple it works so well. To me, it's like the shapes are communicating with each other and then celebrating. At least thats the kind of memory I am associating with my childhood! Nice find!
i remember this from '75 or so- i had an old early colorforms set with shapes just like this...and the shapes communicating remiond me of close encounters when the ship communicates by color and sound...
OMG - this has stuck in my mind for 30 years! Does anyone remember /have a clip of a similar one with like a roaring motor like sound in the background? The sound used to creap me out!
Wow- I had totally forgotten about this, until hearing the sound effects- especually the quadruple emphasis on the completed pattern... "DUN DUN DUN DUN... DA DA DA DA!"
I have been looking for this one for over a year! I didn't even have the first clue how to go about searching for it though. (I tried "red and white shapes", "ARP synth music" etc.) So glad to see it finally make an appearance. Hope it stays up awhile! Now if someone would only post that "Crack Master" segment...
Oh wait, sorry: Wrong page! I thought you were talking about a totally different Sesame Street clip that I watched just before this one: The one with animated lines clip that I used to see back in the 70s.
This squares-and-triangles clip, I've never seen before now, but it was apparently created in 1979 - by which time computer animation was in fact a possibility.
I've only got partial clips from this film (in an 80s episode), but this is as close to the complete set as I've seen in a loooooooooong time. Five stars!
Wow! This one is old but I can remember it. I also remember understanding the three differences in each group (color, shape and size). Apparently, Sesame Street seems to occasionally air some classic S.S. skits but it's VERY rare nowadays. I bet you recorded this in the mid 90's.
@MIKECNW: I don't have the other versions, but I've seen them often enough to wonder where they went. That "DING DING DING DING...dah dah dah dah" motif at the end of each new grouping made those sketches stick in my memory, all right!
I'm sorry, I had to dislike this one

I remember the 'synthesizer-like' music played (tunes repeated four times each) when the groups of shapes are formed. Nice memory indeed!

I like the way the shapes organize themselves by making all sorts of puzzles.

@galaxyhigh73 I remember thinking the DUNs were happy & the DAs were sad. And I'd say the DAs were a quite common late 60s synthesizer sound

The one thing I don't get is why the patterns blink 4 times after being formed?
joeywomer 4 years ago 3
It's called "mind control". Who know what subliminal commands has invoked in people.
xpander2k 4 years ago 2
I used to image the shapes were somehow communicating with each other by flashing.

ARP 2500, presumably? Nice that you could identify it! (I would've guessed Moog.)

Looks like very early computer graphics though it may not be as easy to tell since these were probably out on film.
MIKECNW 4 years ago 2
No such thing as computer graphics back in those days! (1973? '74?) Just plain ol' animation.
vonbontee 3 years ago
Well I don't know about that. The Electirc Company which debuted 2 years after SS had various stuff which looked like computer animation.
Plus how to you know this wasn't before 1973 or 74?
So just be quiet.

yeah this one by far is the best because it has the sound effects. The other skits just show the shapes forming.

You know there were at least 5 versions of this yellow and red shapes computer animation.
Do you have the others?

Unfortunetly I don't.

Maybe we should ask sawing14s or ISNorden or nantoreturns.
