  • @twall788 lol.

  • Excellent tips. Thank you.

  • thanks this is very helpfull!! =)

  • EXACTLY WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR! :)

  • such a cumbersome work flow. Aperture 3 and Lightroom can do the same thing but much easier.

  • Those guys, girls, w.e. can't any darker!

  • Nvm, I just got it, you just need to click with the Move while in the Layer Style options, so you can place it wherever you want.

  • Isn't there a way to free transform the gradient effect simply with the Move tool?

You know, resize it, rotate it, raise or diminish the distance between colors... I do remind that Corel Draw has such feature, so PS could also have that.

  • excellent lesson. Thank you

  • gradient tool is awesome but it sucks cant make it to work, it makes my layer, black, white, transparent but not lighter/darker, fuck g tool

  • Excellent tutorial, thanks.

  • as soon as i click layer mask, the colour boxes both turn grey, please help me out here, also the camera sign below the colour boxes isnt white or selected as yours is in the video.I want to tell you my settings so that you know if i have some wrong settings. On the above menu line, dither and transparency are selected. In refine layer settings, view mode is on L layers, the edge detection and adjust edge output options are not selected. On the MENU ,the image is set in RBG and 8 bits per square, thanks

  • wow.. you explain it with such ease.. and also have the photography talents to back it up. Awesome work!

  • Good tips!

  • Why is it when I do this that my gradient has no effect whatsoever, have I switched something off by mistake or something?

  • @matthewawbery

Make sure you have selected the layer mask when applying the gradient tool effect.

  • @matthewawbery you probaly have both colors on black both the top and bottom

that's what i was doing wrong.

  • Why is it when I do this that my gradient has no effect whatsoever, have I switched something off by mistake or something?

  • When I use gradient tool to brighten only the dark side of a person, it brightens the whole picture. What am I doing wrong? I did everything like in the video. Thanks.

  • Thnx for the quick and easy to use tutorial! :)

  • brilliant...so easy to understand. thank you for this:)

  • i dont know why, but whenever i try to make a gradient on a layer mask, it doesnt work :S

  • @xxpreoxx

Make sure the foreground color in your tool palette is set to black and your background color is set to white before using the gradient tool. If they're both set to white, the gradient tool will have no effect

  • Fantastic, thank you!

  • Thank you for the great tip! I can use it on photos right now :)

  • Keep in mind that if Jim were not doing this for the tutorial, he would spend much more time perfecting the look. His objective here is to show the technique.

  • That's really nice, I guess you could have darkened the ground inbetween them as well. But what really blew me away was the queality on your video, that's... perfect.

  • Your video is really good.

  • Nice demo...

  • why not just Level the your shadows down and your highlights up a little and play with brightness contrast?
