  • Holdsworth is connected to what sound module?

  • Everybody sees Allan as a guitarist or Synthaxist and then they have have trouble to understand(hear) his concepts; actually, he's just a (jazz)musician who happens to play guitar & Synthaxe...his father was a jazz pianist and his hero is John Coltrane.

  • I'm a pretty darn good guitarist. I tried to play a couple of his chords once. A few minutes later (and still not able to do it) I'm like "what is going on here?!?!?!? Who is this man?!?!?" Zappa once said that Vinnie Coliuta is a mutant. HOLDSWORTH is a mutant. Let's appreciate the guy while we still have him.

  • 5 stars!

  • Somewhere in the future there's a solar system laughing at this dated ol' sound. Oh, how early second millenium, they scoff. Gary Husband is an astonishing musician, of course, and for my money has made the best complimentary pairing with Allan to date. Nice upload quality. Big Thanks!

  • There is somekind of standart Windows sound on 2:33

Although the keybord player couldn't play the main theme right, his solo is outstanding!

  • Kei akagi is on fire in this one, great improv! Wish I could see good performances like this in this day.

  • @Fallingglaz3

I have a theory as to why music is generally not as inspiring as "back then" (60's 70's 80's).

Look at the drug usage back then compared to now....much more psychedelic usage, and less stimulants all over the place.

Nowadays it's all meth, and junk....and (all) drugs are generally sneered at because of it.

If only psychs would flood the market again, music would get a lot more interesting.

    Just my 2 cents :]

  • @ExtremeBogom

lol. that would explain why Pink Floyd and other bands were so psychedelic.

  • @ExtremeBogom the rave folks would disagree

  • @photophobiaProject

I'm not so sure they would...

But we would have to hear from one to know for sure, so let's not make claims.

  • @Fallingglaz3 Fully agreed - this concert would sound far less potent without a keyboard player - great work from Kei.

  • One day, Gary Husband will get his props as one of the greatest drummers of all time.

  • @NotYourTypicalNegro

Saw the man live and he was insane. Amazing improviser.

  • I just spent the last three days trying to learn the riff at 4:24. I can't even play it at half speed. It's like it's written just to say fuck you to every other guitar player on the planet.

  • @JackB55555 Allan loves horn players so he thinks as a sax player and musician not just as a guitar player.

  • Well said Strannger, all I can say is that I have been honoured to be able to listen to this. This is beautiful (IMO). Highly technical (FACT). Allan is surrounded with such talented Musicians (deservedly so-fair & play to them). Finally a big thanks to you Sommexe for being an uploader ( AAAAA+++++)!

  • just shut the fuck up. thank you.

  • Also, to vibeway, if you don't like something don't comment on it. You're not going to change anyone's mind by being an asshole.

  • That melody is gorgeous, and Steps Ahead is way different.

  • I grew up on music so different from this - 70's and 80's pop and rock. It's like it comes from another world. But when I hear what is happening, it is compelling and beautiful in a mysterious way. NBC is by far the most "out there" song that I absolutely love.

The tuning is in 5ths? 4:29 he plays a line from the head that looks very different in standard. Anybody know for sure?

This version sounds abrasive to me compared to the version the CD.

Kudos to Allan for being a total genius.

  • what kind of instrument is that?!

  • It's called a Synthaxe. Most everyone here knows that so we assume everyone knows that.

  • AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

    where do they come from?????

  • "Up North" - as we say in England :)

  • Great piece of music - funky - love it - keyboard's standing up quite nicely - good to see.

  • When I first heard this tune,I said "Non Brewed condiment?.What kind of name is Non brewed condiment?"To me it sounds like it should be called "Artificial Intelligence" or "The Silicon God" or"The Microchip Mind".

  • Great alternative titles!

  • why waking up every morning is soo good !

    Thanks

  • fuck, it's just so out of our world, and perception. beautiful in its odd sense. pure, open minded music for open minds.

  • sorry to all the synthaxe fans, but this song is a million times better when Holdsworth is playing regular guitar.

  • You are absolutely right. It has a stronger feeling to it. I actually feel sorry for Allan sometimes, since he seems so sad or pissed-off at times. Its like he doesn't enjoy music lately. I guess he will get over it. Mybe it is the shadow that folows him: the awesome solo from In the Dead of Night. Unique.

  • When Allan plays the chords [seven of them each round] to this tune on synthaxe, there's absolutely nothing like it. You can hear those percussive bell-like sounds coming out of it along with the notes. It's kind of like a xylophone only better.

  • amazing !!!

  • music doesn't get much better than this

  • You're absolutely correct! It really doesn't get any better and it doesn't make any difference what category you try and put it in. No matter what it is; jazz, rock, classical, neo-classical, alternative, or anything else you can dream up. There is nothing else like this in music history and, as you say, it simply does not get any better than this.

  • i can agree completly to what

    farley528 said,- fantastic vibes......

  • too good! akagi is so nice! anybody ever listen to a band named Flim and the BB"s with Johnson on bass? That was my introduction to fusion 10 years ago or so. FRom then on I found Metheny, Weather Report, etc.. and finally Holdsworth!

  • Does anyone have a copy of the scales that Allan had on his instructional video that they could send me? He had a bunch of his own versions on it that I would like to have.

  • I guess you have to study slash chords, fourth voicings and fifth voicings to appreciate or enjoy this stuff. This isn't random music...there is structure. Anyone who doesn't get this should read from the Nicolas Slonimsky Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns. It really makes sense.

  • I saw them in Wichita Kansas in the early 80s. Kie's keyboard STOPPED WORKING! He asked for a metalic clothes hanger! He fixed his keyboard right there on stage during a song! HE FINISHED THE SHOW! Alan made a believer out of me when it comes to being able to be unique-musically!

  • I think I can understand you, its because your ears are not that trained in the kind of music holdsworth plays. Thats what makes holdsworth so great, his lines and impeccable improvisational skills are kind of phenomenal, and yet he can't read music. Thats why grat players like santana, satriani and even eddie van halen and frank zappa stood in awe of Holdsworth's technique. Thats the result of continous research and constant pursuit to innovate, thats what makes allan one of the best.

  • Hey, you dont have to take drugs to appreciate this kind of music. If you're really a very big fan of music, you can comprehend this and besides allan holdsworth doesn't take drugs, I dont know with gary husband, the drummer. Maybe your ears are not that trained. Actually this kind of music is still considered light music if you compare to some classical stuffs and specially those 20th century music from the great masters with all those out n out and dissonant chords. Keep searchin kid!

  • You know I've been watching your clips of Holdsworth with the synthaxe for several months, I dont get tired of viewing them. I've been longing to see this footage of allan with this instrument, back then I was thinking if theres any, coz the ones that you always see him perform is with the other normal guitars that he uses. Thanks really for this! May I know if this concert video of yours is available in the market or on DVD? Because its such a very rare clip. Thanks again.

  • Mortison in 300 years you will understand why that sound is great:-)

  • Gary Husband, Kei Akagi and Allan Holdsworth are all amazing musicians. Sucks that they don't have that crazy keyboard solo at the beginning.

  • Love the song, need to be able to count to 7 & 8....

  • Omfg Allan is playing on a lawnmower. :)

Anyway, one of the all time greats.

  • what kind of patch the did the key player use? recently I have DX7 but I can't create that sound. anyone knows?

  • fuck... that chord changes in the solo are so weird, even though i have some sort of absolute pitch i can´t get them by ear. if someone has them please contact me ;)

  • The chords in this tune are what makes this another one of Allan's masterpieces. If you think these changes are rough, check out his other masterpiece, 4:14 Bradford Exec. Yet another beautiful work of art.

  • yeah, what kinds of drugs do i need to be on to apreciate this music. im being dead friggen serious, i dont undertsand how you guys like this so much, PLEASE explain to me what i am missing.

  • Hi, firstly, i think you don´t need any drugs, just some time to listen, to get an idea of Allan´s "language", as you can see it is pretty unusual and unique. THAT´S particularily why I´m fond of him.

    But, that´s me.

I began to like his music after i watched his REH instrucional video, where he exposes some of his ideas, and his approach towards improvisation, scales and harmony. Oh! and PLEASE listen to Metal Fatigue and the Tokyo gig. I hope you like them. Best wishes,

    Facundo (Arg)

  • No, you need a BRAIN, a really brain to understand the music of master Holdsworth. I think it´s too mucho to you. If you don´t like it, don´t listen it, and leave us. From Colombia I really tell you ...... vete a la mierda!!!!!!!!!

  • My respect for the musical talent of Holdsworth's music has grown enormously from watching these concert videos, even though ihe was already on the higest pedestal of musical virtusos in my book. The chord structure, the whole piece, is so far beyond anything else. Plus, in my book, its relaxing to listen to. He's my favorite, musical critcism aside (even though any criticism of him I would and can rebuttle).

  • Well put chrom. The buildup is incredible, then those long tones kill me. Just kills me.

  • I still can't fathom how articulate Allan is in his line. Totally singularly mercurialy satisfyingly musical.

  • Gary Husband plays like a champion on this track. I really enjoy the energy on display by all the musicians. I think Allan took the speedy solo from the beginning and included it in the middle. The credits on my copy of the Atavachron release don't show a keyboardist playing on this song.

  • there is no keyboard player on that studio recording. all key solo in the atavachron album is made by allan's synthaxe

  • Allan did another tour that year with Wackerman and Johnson, opening for Chick Corea. They started with this amazing tune!

  • allan's solo sucks.....the time away, it needs to be about 6 times long. then repeat.

  • "what happened to the fast lick in the beginning?"

Yeah! Kei Akagi skipped the really out there solo he does on the LP.

  • what happened to the fast lick in the beginning?

  • ha! I thought the same when the song started! I opened this video specially to listen to that particular lick XD

it appears later at 4:09 and it´s fuckkkkking awesome

  • one of Holdsworth's greatest tunes by far. I'm thrilled to see this one Youtube. thanks

  • wtf? they didn't play the first part!

  • omg, i came again to say again how awesome this song is. Both, Allan and Key's phrasing sound like LSD entities singing those notes in your face and making you insane. haw, i know, WTF?!

  • the sickest melody in improvised music so far. A few years after this Steven Hunt was in the lineup; he dubbed the melody with Allan

  • Holy fuck...some of those melodies were "disturbingly" beatiful

  • "Disturbingly beautiful" - well put!!!!
