They must be 10 times more knowledgeable about black music than me. Tom Dowd is the producer I admire most but it doesn't matter if he played music himself, though I know he did. If you call the crap Ronnie Earl plays "blues", you still don't understand the real blues after all these years. I admit as a kid I mostly listened to 'white' blues. But the realization came when I was 23. And you're what? 45... How immature! Hitting blue notes is one thing, playing blues is completely another.
@applejak2000 "LOVE to see you tell your bullshit to Ronnie's face - I KNOW you don't have the courage, punkass." WTF does this have to do with the point of our debate? I already knew you've got no brain to debate logically, but this is too terrible. If you see a Mafioso relieving himself on the street and you don't dare tell him off, it still remains true that the act of relieving your bladder on the street is wrong. Understand? Can't believe I'm writing to a 45 year old.
@applejak2000 So many idiots (mostly Americans) have come up with the same bullshit argument. I'm tired of giving free lessons to deaf ears and airheads. So I wouldn't bother writing anew; I just revise what I wrote back to the last guy. At least he seemed to be convinced of my point, and I hope you have as much brain. I've been playing guitar for years and I'm sure I can play music better than Pete Welding or Jerry Wexler. But I wouldn't dare say I have better ears for music than them.
Outstanding Performance - T-Bone Walker is Looking Down Saying You Did an Excellent & Extremely Nice Set The Ronnie Earl Way !!! Anyone Who Would Disagree With This Fact Was Born Deaf - Dumb & STUPID !!!
Yeah, there is a big distinction between Black and White blues players. White people can play the blues, but they still sound white doing it. Kinda like Basketball. ha.
I have seen Ronnie twice in Portland, Maine in the last few months. Both times, Per was on the drums for a few songs which was just amazing.... Bar none, after 1,000 shows in my life; these were the two best shows I have ever seen. The first show, Ronnie played 3.5 hours and never took a break. He is at the top of his game now.
There is nothing more profound that coming to You Tube to see a video of someone we enjoy, and being subjected to a bunch of subjective crap. Ronnie is a great blues Player and does a really great show. Thanks Ronnie and thanks Fatharpo.
Forget Earl - how 'bout some praise for his backing musicians: Mudcat Ward on bass, Anthony Geraci on Keys and Mark greenberg on drums- without them, he can't do half of what he needs to do.
Everyone knows that in a blues situation a good backing band is essential for the lead player to shine. Ronnie Earl is the frigging man, what a monster. There's noone saying that, but the backing band desereves a lot of praise as well.
Getting a good player to really take of takes a great band.
I just want to know when the last time you saw a player of Mr. Earl's caliber, playing with a shitty backup band. Your comment, "forget Earl" was a waste of breath. the conversation was about Earl. It's like sitting in a resaurant and someone say's, "Holy shit, this is the best chicken I ever ate." You would have to pipe up and say, " Nah, It aint the chicken, It's the garlic that makes it good"...Nothing like turning a simple statement into an arguement...
Dear Ronnie E. you've been in my heart ever since i first saw you play @ Stin Bull Pub in the early 90s.Since then i've bought most of your Albums.I listen to your songs when i'm feeling good or i'm feeling blue.Your music truly brings me joy i hav'nt felt in years. You are a Star who's Light may not shine as brightly as others, but i know that one must draw closer to you to see you are just as beautiful as the other stars that shine in our lives.God Bess You Love JW
Hi FATharpo! Hifat? No, what I meant for was belated greetings. You may well be bewildered to see your page has become a venue for a rather lengthy debate without your permission. Sorry about that and thanks anyway. And of course you're more than welcome to join us.
If I offended you, I apologize. But I haven't used any abusive words directed at you, while you started with "What you been smokin'?" which I find quite derogatory and now you say I'm being harsh. Ah, I'm the bad guy. Well, debating is inherently offensive. Anyway I hope our debate is constructive. I even wish there were more participants here. P.S. I need more space; pls reply (just a line will do, if you don't have much to write) to each of my messages so I can have a comment box. Cheers!
If you think this is anywhere near T-Bone, you still got a long way to go. One of the reasons many guitarists have failed to emulate T-Bone is they cannot get their sticky fingers off the fret board fast enough to sound crisp and sharp. They sound bloody soggy. In my view Ronnie Earl is just another 'white blues' guitar player.
This is the greatest blues guitar player on the planet - and all the best blues guitars today are white - Gary Moore, SRV, Walter Trout, Alvin lee, etc.
Am I having the same sort of difficulty as when you're trying to convince a kid there are better foods out there than Macdonald's Hamburgers? I hope you're intelligent enough to suspect what you like best may not be the best the world can offer. Ever tried pizzas in Italy? No matter how you like the pizzas at your local pizza parlor, it can't compare with the real McCoy. Same with music (esp. blues). Great blues have GROOVE and HUMOR.
Have you ever seen Ronnie Earl live? The other poster is correct, this isn't Ronnie's best but it's pretty damn good. There is a CD out with Gary Moore, BB King, Albert Collins and Albert King. In it all three refer to Gary Moore as possibly the best blues player today and shoot amazing looks at him as he plays. Ronnie is as good without the pyrotechnics Moore uses from his metal days.
When did we start talking ONLY about blues guitarists of today? I started with a comparison between Earl and T-Bone, and the inferior performances of blues guitarists of today. There are few blues musicians today who are on a par with their predecessors. Part of the reason is the blues audiences today not having a discerning ear. Raise your standards;knowledgeable audiences bring about better musicians just like well-informed voters can elect a better president.
We disagree, I think, on what blues 'is' (Bill Clinton?) and I like modern blues much better than old style How you 'feel' when you are listening is what determines musical greatness to me and guys like Kenny Wayne Shepard, Walter Trout, even Mark Knopfler at times, along with Earl and Moore, are what it's all about. The only black blues guitarist today that compares with them, IMHO dammit, is Buddy Guy and a fellow named Melvin Taylor. Blues is not groove and humor, it is feelings.
Of course, blues is feelings. Did I ever deny that? I think it even silly to mention it. Blues is talks about life or personal perceptions of life. Humor is important to make you an attractive talker. Now who would enjoy a tremendous talker or a shouter? Gary Moore is a case in point. I call his blues Big Mouth Blues because of the way he plays and because of the way he stupidly keeps his mouth open. Try pizzas in Italy!
T-Bone is called the Father of Modern Blues? What's your definition of Modern Blues then?
You sure you understand what you're talking about? You know what, you're talking about white blues or even heavy metal blues, which are neither genuine blues nor blues rock. Blues rock is already an established genre and I love it. But I regard white blues as wannabe blues and heavy metal blues as deformed blues. Just childish and pathetic.
There is no comparison between the technical expertise and sound of todays great blues guitarists (forgot Robben Ford) and the older players .. who, yes of course started the genre but aside from your name-calling and pizza mentality, try to compare the playing of Albert Collins, Albert King and even BB, with Moore, Earl and the others.
Cheers!
Now want to talk about technical expertise? Hang on! Didn't you say blues is feelings?
Alright, technical side is also important. But here you're wrong again . Magic Sam, Earl Hooker, Robert Johnson and his stepson Robert Lockwood to name a few. For example you can see what a virtuoso RL was on Blues Story DVD. Do you realize that most of the guitarists you say are great hardly ever play acoustic and mostly play single-string solos? So much for their technical expertise!
If you put technical expertise first and foremost, here's the ultimate example. Stanley Jordan. The guitarist with the greatest technical expertise. Undeniable. You can't play like him even one note. Compared with him, the guitarists you admire are nothing. And does he play blues? You bet! Just listen to him play "Still Got the Blues" on his "Live in NY" album. He's got not only outrageous virtuosity but also tremendous musicality. He can talk eloquently on his guitar.
I guess it boils down to, as it always does, what you like in the blues and what I like. Can't define the word 'better' here if we both like blues but different styles of it. Watch gary Moore's vid here on "Still Got The Blues" and you'll see my meaning of technical and feeling (I hope).
Never post a negative comment on a music vid on YouTube unless you're sure to be able to play better?
Never complain about food served at a restaurant because you cannot cook better?
Would you say the same thing to music critics? Some of them are very very knowleageable and informative though most of them are probably lousy musicians.
Keep listening to good/real music and develop a discerning ear. You also need to develop a more logical mind.
If you think you can do better, please post it! I seriously doubt you can.... I doubt you even play. If you do, let us see it, chump. Matter of fact you sound bloody SOGGY. You're just another "anti white blues" armchair critic. You come in here and spoil everything for everyone else with your so-called analysis, look, people don't want to hear it - they want to hear Ronnie, NOT YOU. Get the fuck out dork, and shut the fuck up. Or post better. It's tribute, not a clone, dumbshit.
