@UnitedPebbles Well, the correct term is 'weighted keys'. In that case, a really nice keyboard is the Yamaha DGX-640. It's got the full 7 octaves that a full size piano has got, and fully weighted hammer action keys. Oh and the piano sound is great - I played one a few weeks ago. It's a step up from the casio, a much better machine.
The keybed of tha Casio has got 76 keys, so this is better than the Yamaha E423. As I said I had the opportunity to try the Yamaha and I didn't like the key action. Is it good on the Casio WK 3800 ? I got the feeling thaht this Casio is an older model, but that when it came out it was a semi-proffessional keyboard, whereas the Yamaha is more of a sophisticated toy. What do you think ?
Thanks for your advice, I will get mad if I don't buy a new keyboard soon ;-)
@albanbach The casio's key action is ok I guess, it's makes loud 'clack' sounds when you play vigorously. Soundwise, it has nice organs, acoustic guitars, saxophone is passable, piano could be better, the yamaha definitely has better pianos and EPs. synth sounds are pretty weak on these entry level keyboards. Take a look at the Korg X50, the Yamaha EX5, the Roland Juno Di, and the Alesis QS6.2. If you need built in speakers, I can highly recommend the Yamaha PSR S550
What matters the most for me is the sounds. From your videos, I guess that they are better ont the Casio WK 3800 than on the Yamaha E423. I like the grand piano, the sax and the choir on the Yamaha, but that's about it. I need good keyboard sounds (piano, electrical piano, organ, harpsichord), good strings and good choir sounds. Which one do you think is better in this matter ? Also, the Yamaha has got real-time controls, but on the Casio you can tweak the sounds.
Hello, I had an old Yamaha PSR E313 - correct sounds for the price, but pretty useless because you can't save your resgistrations, etc. So I resold it and I am planning to buy a new keyboard. Since I am on a tight budget, I am considering either the Yamaha PSR E423 (300 euros new) or the Casio CTK (200 euros new). What do you think ? I tried the E423 and find the key action was toyish and the amplification useless (2x2,5 W). Which has the better sounds ? I hate strings and organ on the Yamaha.
@LedgerLines Admitted? Where? I have never looked upon the Casio WK 3800 as a bad keyboard, it does everything you can expect for the price and more. I only upgraded to my Korg M50 (I suppose you'd say that's a bad keyboard too?) because I wanted a more versatile synth engine and better integration with my sequencing software.
@Nismology5 Yea I was actually choosing between the M50 and Juno Gi, For me the M50 had some cheesy sounds (although the drums are pretty stellar) and the keys felt like I was playing a 100 starter keyboard. Add to that the fast that the M50 was 200 more than the Juno Gi it was easy really (plus the Juno has an 8 track recorder built in!)
In the comment below you say to get the Yamaha instead because it has a better sound selection
@LedgerLines I actually bought the Juno G first (the original one) but when I received it, it wouldn't even switch on. I sent it back and got another one, this time it turned on, but because it had crackly pots, a screen that looked like it would burn out at any minute, a problem with the pitch lever that meant the keyboard was a semitone flat every time you switched it on, I sent it back. My M50 was only £600 from eBay, and its a Ltd. edition one. Works perfectly.
i prefer the casio than yamaha because my parents can't afford a good piano like yamaha, but Casio has some awesome tunes you can play with, its the same, but different brands
A Casio huh? I´m surprised with your keyboard and your performance. This sounds too good, it's a shame that my Roland E-500 (well it's from year 1997) a semi-professional keyboard sounds garbage compared with your modern quality-sounding CASIO. Your version of this song is excellent, heavy sound delivered from a Casio, unbelievable, i like it!!
@stereobrowser, yes it is a good keyboard dispite the brand name, however, I now play a Korg M50 :P Casio WK series keyboards can be had on the used market for unbelievable prices, sometimes the go for under £100! Thanks very much for your complements, if you have th time, check out my other keyboard videos :)
thanks :) The WK-200 does not have the same sound engine, in fact the sounds are of a worse quality. same with the wk-500, and the key action is HORRIBLE.
Its just spongy feeling. On my WK-3800, the keys hit the felt below with a nice positive action, but on the new casios which have box style keys, they don't travel far enough and wobble slightly. To be fair, casio probably did this to eradicate the 'thunk' sound that their keybeds have made for years. If you are planning on getting a keyboard, My advice would be to go for a yamaha. Their sound quality, feature set and key action is far superior in their current range of keyboards.
but the key action on wk 500 isn't horrible for piano songs, is horrible for the dance or mix music, because for dance music you have to move the fingers faster between the keys, you don't?
Its not that it doesnt move fast, the box keys on the wk-5000 aren't weighted at all, they're just hollow plastic, but the quality is really BAD, they wobble from side to side and the feel really spongy like playing a keyboard made of wet fish
in the video, I actually do have the the strings and everything playing at the start, but to turn off everything except the bass line, press 10, 8, 7 and 6, but leave 9 (the bass) on.
at the start, I have the rhythm playing, with the drums turned off. on the small buttons just below the screen, press the one marked 10to turn the drums part off when playing on fingered/casio chord mode. the rhythm is 035 disco pop.
This is really REALLY good and as a huge BC fan, I'm really critical on covers of this song. It's flawless. While the synth is beautiful and all, I'd still loooove to hear your version of this with the real piano sounds. Keep rockin!!
Just found your vids of the wk3800. They're great. I have a wk3700 that I make my own backing tracks on. What a great keyboard ! I think yours has a built in usb. I love your synth sound etc. May I ask - how would you record directly onto a minidisc(through the aux line out?) Are you using the smf player for your pieces? I think Casio should employ you!! Great Work
I have never used a minidisc in my life XD No I am using the built in rhythms and editing the individual tracks of the mixer. I would love to know how to create my own backing tracks and use the smf player! Yes it does have usb which I use frequently. I am recording via the line out on my keyboard amp which is linked to the keyboard via sterio inputs. Thanks
great sound...I like your version better than the original. I am actually a huge fan of Jean Micheal Jarre and Larry Fast(Synergy)and Tangerine Dream. Long live the synth!!!!!!
well... I can tell you the chords- C# minor, A major, B major, C# minor, E major, A major, B major C# major. That is the chorus. Hope this helps (I have never used a roland xp50, only an old xp10, so I dont think I can really help will dound settings etc.)
hi nismology, I have the same keyboard. Can you share with me on how to record on it. I've only been able to record one song. I'd to make a full music with other instruments. Pls. if you can, I need your help

Nismo, thanks very much for the info. It was exactly what have been looking for. thanks very much. Pls. I want to erase the song, how do I do it? I've tried, but I just kept recording on the old song. How do I erase? thanks for your help.
just press the song memory button once so it says 'play' the press the down cursor so it says 'SongDel?' then press + twice on the number pad to erase.
nismo, it's me again. thx for your infos. you've been like a treasure to me. i need more help. how do i store the song, and record a new song without erasing the old one? i don't know if your piano has a floppy disk space. mine has it...but i have no clue what to do with it. pls. can you help some more? i don't have any manual. thx
Im really sorry, I don't know how to do that and the manual is useless, the only way I can think of doing it is recording it onto the computer, just attach a standard 1/4 inch jack lead from your keyboard to the computer and use a program like 'audacity' to record it.
I never really use the song memory function on the keyboard myself.
hey nismo, i was just messing around with the keyboard, and I happened to find a way of recording at least 4 complete songs without erasing any. maybe this might be useful to you too.....there are 4 recording space when you press record. press + to set @ 000,001,002,3 & 4. It seems the 'play' note should be @ the same number as 'record'. hope this is useful to you. thx. oh, 1more thing, how do you use the musical notes on the number pads?
Thanks, that'll be useful, though I don't often use the recording feature on the keyboard. I dont know what the notes on the numberpad do, but if You ever find out, please let me know!
What I really fancy is note with piano weight, because those are sweet to touch. Did I use the right terminology here?
