  • Informative video. Really helpful. Better lighting in future vids would be good.

  • can do it but it doesnt work with my didgeridoo, it NEVER HAS...I am going insain with this, I cant seem to make that "stop" in the sound when I breath in go away....this is really hard:(

  • Hey man, I've been practising circular breathing for a few weeks and It's getting pretty good and consistant but... when I'm blowing out from my lungs, my cheeks are always inflated.... i cant seem to make a low drone noise without having my cheeks inflated? most people ive seen dont inflate their cheeks till they're going for a breath of air

  • Very informative!

  • Hello, this is probably the best video so far I've seen, there are loads of techniques but this one is the best, I've lernt how to breath in while doing your methard of vibrating the lips, but how do you switch form blowing into the didgeridoo to vibrating your lips and back, Because every time I do the lip vibrating technique, the didgeridoo goes high pitch like a trumpet, because my lips arn't vibrating at a low pitch, all this makes my playing just sound stupid, so could you help me more? :)

  • oh god i can´t do this... i don´t know why... it´s very difficult i thing. Everytime when i try this with the didgeridoo there is no sound coming out cause my lips are getting strained.. :(

  • at 1:19 you couldnt speak if you didnt have any air in your lungs so gtz on being magic

  • Is it a big difference to play with this technique on a vacuum cleaner pipe than a real didgeridoo? Anyone with experience for both?

  • I have neglected to learn circular breathing properly,,, Luckily I can use one breath for about 30 seconds of didge playing... But I think it is time to learn how to do it for real. Thanks for the informative video tutorial. Practice time.

  • good post, this is how I first learn to circular breat too.

  • This is very very very frustrating....

  • I'm trying this but the air in my cheeks is not enough to put pressure on my lips to create the tone. It only makes a raspberry sound. I am physically unable to do this. Anyone else having this trouble? Maybe my oral cavity is not big enough...

  • I do too I am also learning to do that too

  • Train! I found it very hard at the beginning but after a couple of "training times" I'm finally starting to getting it quite good.

  • got the same problem

  • after months of trying it and only getting to a certain point and hitting a wall, I have come to the conclusion that it's my oral build that keeps me from being able to do circular breathing. I don't think everyone can do it because I don't think everyone has the cheek-space to hold enough air to keep the drone while inhaling.

  • @AscottW

Keep on trying. You can achieve it with also very little cheek volume. With the right cheek movement, the volume in the mouth only is sufficient for a quick sneef

  • Thank you! It explains a lot to me.

Still can't control the pause in my breathing, it's like a reflex. If you have any advise there, I'd be grateful!

  • breathing is difficult?!?!!? omg. i should have taken the lssons my cousin offered 3 years ago,

anybody got easier ways to learn...its hard =O

  • Thanks a lot!

Really really helpful!!!!!!!!Finally I know how it works!!!

the video is only a bit dark and I cannot see the cheeks...

    Good help anyway!

  • Thanks a bunch! I can circular breath for a few seconds then I lose my coordination. The cheek, squeeze, spit thingy works great.

  • After many years, finally someone who's explaining good!!! It's like the didgeridoo players don't want to tell you the "secret". Thank you very much! Got it on the 4th try.

  • very helpful. this video helped me understand the concept and the practice of circular breathing. my didge playing just soared leaps and bounds.

  • when i do it i cant nake my lips vibbrate the proper way to produce the right sound in my didge with jsut my cheeks. if someone could help me out...

    thanks

  • I got the same problem :/

  • well i know how to do the circulate breathing or switch breathing, but when i want to practice this out in my yiggy ( didge) its totaly busted, a straw in a glass of water or a tube in a bottle of water it all works, but the squizing lips in combi with my didge doesnt work

  • your a super star, its taken a very frustrating 2 years to do that! many thanks, I am a drummer and one day I wish to play a similar style to andy graham - the didge/drummer dude. check him out he's cool! thanks again bro

  • I can do it just normally, put when i play my didgeridoo i cant do it?

It's like blowing--cheeks--sniff--pause- -blowing again..:S hate that damn pause any advice?

  • I can't breath xX

    Really good tutorial. (Y)

  • GOT IT IN 3 trys! wow GREAT VID!

  • Awesome! THANK YOU EVERYBODY for your compliments!

  • man you're amazing. watched every other circular breathing vid, didnt help a bit. watched yours, got it first time!!

that tip about leaving the lungs empty did it for me. i was trying to circular breath with my lungs full for some reason haha. thanks again!!

  • you're a god dude

    thanks for sharing that vid

  • Millions of people have tried to explain this to me but you are the only one who has made sense, i can do it now, thank you!!

  • I can have the air out of my lungs and squeeze the air out of my cheeks but cant co-ordinate sniffing through the nose, its really hard even though you have simplified it which is great

  • sir thank you very much , i was watching ur video and doing the drills and boom!!! i started to circle breathe ... thank u so much for helping me in this venture now i can continue on my path in digeridoo land!!!!!

  • hi i can do the cheek pusking but i get a pause in it from switching for cheek pushing to lung pushing anyways u can help me will be great!

  • awsome vid, The way you describe it gave me a new way to practice. I should have this down in no time. Thanks.

  • Thank you for this, i have seen so many people show me but they make it seem so easy, your more gentle approach has kept me calm while learning. This has also kept my attention longer.

I will keep trying & now i believe it will come to me. Just got to keep trying.

Thank you for doing this. It is appreciated over here in the UK.

  • Thanks... I think there's hope for me. Your comment of "It's actually easier than it looks gave me a boost.

  • Nicely done. I'm a long time sax/bassoon player who has just taken up the tin whistle. I've always put aside the notion of circular breathing because it was never described in a way which made me think I would ever possible accomplish the task. This is one of the better explinations I have heard and is helping a lot. I always wanted to buy a didg, and probably will in the coming months. But till then, this has helped with the breathing technique in my other musical endeavors. Great Job.

  • Great video - thanks a lot dude!

I can now play didgeridoo thanks to you!

  • i cant help but feel like im blowing with my lungs and i can only do it onec but then i feel like choking

  • This was a really useful demo, and I tried to practice along with you. The trouble is, I seem to have the "cheek squeeze & breathe" going, but I always lose my drone. I guess I still need to practice lots, but is this normal? Am I practising in the wrong way?

  • thanks for the video lesson on a very ancient instrument...

  • Thank you sooo much. I recently went to Australia and got a Didg i have been trying for about a month to get this down, watched this video, and it only took about 2 hours. the only problem i have is that i keep feeling like i have too much air in my lungs

  • Thank you so much....

  • Very nicely done mate, thanks very much. I'm getting the hang of it now.

  • this is the most informative video i have found so far, thank you brian.

  • so i can get the drone to keep going with my cheecks but when i start blowing with my lungs again it like sounds very jerky and un even and the drone stopes for half a second when the breath goes back...whats the deal?

  • This will get better with time and practice.. keep going!

  • NOW I GET IT!

    thank you!

  • Hi , ehm do you tight up the lips when you breath in ? because im not able to vibrate my lips with cheeks power..

  • finally! I've been trying to use circular breathing with my didge for a while now, but to no avail. I watched this video and now I can do it perfectally. Thanks for the help!

  • hi guy, greetings from germany

some time ago i tried to start playing didge, but i never ever had any clue how to manage that cb - you solve the miralce by just calling it "switch playing", if someone´s able to teach it uses just one word to keep anyone going who´s interest in!!! from know on i know it´ll work someday!!! for that was the basic. thank´s a lot and keep on going!! it´s an awesome help!!! for everyone - great vid

  • I had the same problem! All it took was 1 certain way to understand it. Thank you!

  • many thanks, great video!

  • thank you a lot sir, your lessos

  • Beeswax is used the most. Some use parafin too, a type of candle wax but it hardens moreso than beexwax

  • DUDE~!

Great video, you're a natural teacher. If you can do it, please add some other didgeridoo videos, maybe something on making alternate sounds / rhythms, etc.

    Thanks again~

  • Thanks, this video was really helpful! I still have a question though - whenever I try to do this, I end up feeling like there's no air in my lungs even after sniffing in, I guess it's because I'm using the air up again straight away. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is this just a matter of practice makes perfect?

  • You should only use 1/2 of the air in your lungs (or less) and then get a new breath in. I believe you are probably using more than half of the air in your lungs and therefore cannot make up for it by the quick sniffs. You'll get used to what it feels like to only be "half way down"

  • Very Sweet Instructions. I just blew through my lips for about 40 seconds, much to the amazement of my yellow lab, hehe. I got a word for ya, Chambering instead of switching; like a reverb or echo chamber but with air and in your head. Think about that.

  • Thank you very much for the help.

  • this was really helpful! the hardest part really is making the drone sound just with the cheeks and not the lungs. thanks!

  • would an instrument with an internal diameter of two and a half inches be harder to do this with?

  • larger diameter didges are in fact considered 'air hogs' and are typically harder to learn circular breathing on. Crimping down your mouthpiece to below 1 1/8" will help but ideally you would want to learn on a smaller didge.

  • ok i've watched this a few times, and probably will a few more times.... the sniffing and dronin at the same time, has got my body a bit confused..hopefully it will pass soon

  • I really got a lot outta this vid and I can make the fast buzz but I can't make the low drone with my cheeks I am getting kinda frustrated.

  • Every little bit help, so thanks for taking the time. I've not been able to get it yet, but I'm having too much fun making sounds with the digd to quit trying! Thanks again. I found your vid quite helpful as I can see in the dark;)

  • Not helpful at all the video is FAR too dark

  • thanks

  • I heard a good ex is to blow through a straw in a glass of water "blowing bubbles".the idea is to keep the bubbles going while sniffing in and out.then move up to a bigger volume hose and do the same thing building up to the didj or wind instrment.

  • Thank you Shadow Man!

  • Thanks a lot,you really helped me man! awsome job mastero

  • hi there, are you doing that simple exersise you showed earlier puff the cheeks and buzzing your ombachure into the didgeridoo? because i find you need to use a horse sound to make the proper sound which brings me back to my point about not being able to breathe in while playing?????

  • I get stuck at the switch between using lungs and using cheeks. I can finally get the cheeks to make the sound but there's still a little bit of a pause going from lungs to cheeks. Sometimes I can't even make the switch at all and when I finally do it's too late because I don't even have enough breath in my cheeks. Any pointers on how to make it comfortable to switch.

  • Concentrate on making both movements at the same time- meaning- while actually making the cheek sound (or using cheek power) take in the sniff threw the nose. This must happen at the same exact time. By sniffing in through the nose you will obviously then feel your lungs full again. If you cannot make the switch, then you are not doing them at the same exact time. WHILE using the cheek power, sniff in at the same exact time.

  • i cant seem to blow the air out of my lungs in time for a sound to stop coming out of my sax

  • VERY NICE, CUZ!!

  • Awesome explanation! The best I've seen. This is exactly how I learned two years ago: the straw in the water thing never worked. For everyone else trying to learn, this is how it's done. Practice. You have to also build up the muscles in the cheek. The more you practice, the better muscle strength, the less tired you become, the better you get.

  • simpley the best "Circular Breathing"

Tutorial thanks for sharing i will make sure to link

    beginners to your video

    all the best

  • lol i can play the digerdo but i still cant get this circular breathing thing!! :(

  • Me too!!!

  • heyy man thanks soo much for this it really helped me.

  • sweet! thanks for taking the time to show us! i find it really really clear and helpful! cheers!

  • thanks so much for the vid man! I learned how to circular breath 2 days ago, i used the straw technique and like 2 other methods, but i just COULDNT get it down on the didge, in normal i could do it...but not on didge... now with your vid, the main poitn that helped was when u said barely put your tongue to the front when sqweezing cheeks to get it going. i couldnt drone for even a sec while letting the cheek air out. Thanks!

  • 1 1/2 inches wide, 118 CM long

  • Yo this was really helpfull thanks.!!

  • Try blowing bubbles through a staw in a glass of water while practicing but keep it going

  • best vid i have seen on this issue, still can,t do it yet, but this vid has give me hope. thanks alot.

  • Wow. That's a lot easier than what I've been trying!

jbonehambone: The inside of a didge is hollow. I made one out of some pvc tubing in about half an hour from a description on 'didgeridoo tribe' on the net. It's a blast!

  • yo I'm going to home-deopt now that I know that PVC works :P how wide should the pipe b, and how long???

  • is there anything inside the pipe of the didge? just a hollow tube? if so i have plenty of bamboo that i can use.

  • sweet thanks i wanna learn so much and vids like this really REALLY help.

  • Hi there !

I`m very new to the didgeridoo - and was searching for any tips for doing the circular breathing. Your video is great - I just have to practice any further now.

    Greets from Germany !

  • the first time i heard "this feels weird, cuz is the first time i tried filming myself"i tought you said "this feels weird, cuz is the first time i tried killing myself"

  • I had to rewind it, cuz i thought that too!!!Scared me!

  • Got it!!! finally! I've been trying for quite awhile now. Still a little rough on the transition from cheek power back to lung power but I'm sure that will come with time and practice. Thanks Brian for a great tutorial. My only beef with it is... crappy lighting. You needed a light source in front of you so we can see your face. Thanks again

  • Great! Yes, with practice, you'll become smoother and smoother.. I still need practice myself! And SORRY to everybody for the poor lighting.. next one will be better. ; )

  • wow. I read a how to on a website a long time ago and I could never get it down. Finally, after all this time, I think I've got circular breathing down. My drone will be unstoppable. Thank you.

  • now I have spit all over the screen and keyboard..will need some practice for sure

  • holy crap...that was the easiest how-to iv'e seen in a looooong time...!!!!!!

    great job!

i have some questions about the didgi itself...i'm just starting out and want to know EVERYTHING

  • Aha - I figured out how to make that really harsh 'frog throat-singing' sound I've head on a few clips here! Just sing at a frequency that has no harmonics in common with the pipe - it really makes the air rattle around!

  • OK - so I spent the weekend making rude noises into a PVC tube...and it's kind of coming along. But I'm having trouble actually breathing in while pressing out from cheeks. While holding breath is ok. Would it be better to practice initiating the sound with cheeks & inhaling. Maybe it would be easier to have the air column vibration already started, THEN switching breath?

  • beautifulLY spoken

  • beautiful spoken

  • Good work!

  • very informative, brilliant

  • Brian ,, just ta let ya know ,, I forst viewed this vid a long while back ,, and it has been invaluable to me ,,giving me a new understanding of circular or trapped breathing ,,thanks so much !! very nicely done !!

  • can't do it!

  • to make the didg noise isnt to hard but to circular breath is hardcore thanks for your help i will continue to practice

  • Brilliant video, mate! Very cogent and well-demonstrated. Must have a go straightaway! Thanks ever so much - good on ya!

  • Nice one Brian. Just bought myself a Didgeridoo in Sydney, now to learn how to play the thing, then I can really call myself and "Aussie!". Switch breathing here we come....i hope. Cheers, b ;-)

  • Thank You , Master , Bless You

  • one of the best explinations i've heard, thanks.

  • A lot of times your cheeks don't move, while you inhale. How do you think you do that? I do not say, that you are not breathing on cheek pressure, but the tongue is more involved as you might know. I can hear a certain Wôk-Sound, especially in the last part, which is a typical sign for tongue pressure. The in-breath is easier with cheeks full, cause tongue has more air to push out. With cheeks closed, the "wôk" sounds more clear and you need a faster sniff and to coordinate it more fluently.

  • Commenting back to Marc, the tongue was only used to START the lips to buzz but I assure you, I dont even know how to use the tongue to cause the buzz. It is strictly the lips as its supposed to be. My cheeks are only moving to inflate while allowing a sniff. Of course the cheeks can be used as forcing breath sounds and other sounds but thats not demo'd here. Not sure what you're getting at

  • Hi there, great that you did this, but I am sorry to tell, that in this video THE TONGUE was used to let the lips buzz. If you look closer you recognize, that the cheeks don´t move enough for this specific tongue sound.

    thanks anyway

    Marc

  • DAD! :] i found it. yay! "this feels weird," hahaha. very cool. i love it.

    love you. xoxoxo.

  • That's great man. Bloody hell, I'm an Aussie getting taught to play the didgeridoo by a yank. What's the world coming to? Great vid, 5 stars from me.

  • thx man :D

  • Are there more video tutorials for the Didgeridoo? I would like to learn to play this instrument, but I have no idea where to start.
