You can control your mixer parameters, apply effects, trigger sound clips and samples, and view all parts of your Ableton Live project for complete control. This allows you to create you remixes on the fly in a quicker and more creative way than other you could with other DAWs.

@NativeDubs Sure, it's not a drum machine or anything like a roland octapad etc. If it really was that critical, I don't think you should be doing it with your fingers anyway. For those 'finger drummers' though, you can give your beats a more organic feel by using the velocity effects in Ableton and adjusting the randomizer settings.

@pnut3844 - it's a midi controller... the buttons on the launchpad trigger events on your computer. Within Ableton, there's 'built in' integration that allows seamless control when you plug in with no setup needed. In other programs you can use the native learn features in automap to map each button to a normal midi signal to trigger controls within that program.

Just be aware that the version of Ableton that comes with the Launchpad is only good for launching clips and live playing like this guy is doing. If you want to use it to record tracks then you are in for a surprise. One audio and two MIDI tracks. That's it. I call it Ableton Gelding version. And don't even think about going to Ableton for help as you won't get any. Dumped Ableton and went with Cubase. Much better support and easier to use. Hopefully LP will work with it or I will sell LP.

@jaxel1992 Yea. But the problem is they do not warn you that it is a Gelding version when you buy said device. Had they stated that on the material I probably would not have bought it. And the version I have is not a full blown version but a start up version of Cubase. I actually find it nicer because I could never get any answers from Ableton. They're all hard to use.Steinberg on the other hand have been extremely responsive on all issues. That is the biggest difference to me. Customer service.

@godzilla1up The Launchpad can be used as a standard MIDI controller and as long as your DAW has some form of MIDI learn mode you should be able to assign it effectively. The Launchpad was primarily developed for use with Ableton Live and allows you to control effects, launch clips and mix your tracks.

This pad launches loops. You need to drop loops into Ableton.

It also controls effects etc, but the buttons do not necessarily have to be one use buttons. Different combinations and modes do different things. There are many applications for this, and is compatible with nearly all music programs and if you're trying to think of what you can use this for then it's probably not for you...
