  • Honestly, is there anyone, anywhere, anytime, who can pull of a song like Marianne Faithful? What she is able to convey with her incredible voice is almost beyond comprehension. It is chilling. There aren't enough words to express her impact on music and on people's lives. Oh, and this band! omg! They are incredible!

  • @campfirenetwork Agreed.

  • This song sounds like Colin Meloy wrote it for her. Great performance.

  • something about her,like her!

  • the crane wife 3 by the decemberists. amazing...

    tks for the info williamtexas.

  • amazing delivery of Marianne s.Don t know who dazzles me the most in this band. that drummer, the guy playing acoustic and doing some incredible backing vocals, what a tremendous job everybody! Fantastic musicians. amazing...

  • Yes, a LEDGEND !!

  • Letterman, a nut. Ignorant

  • Her band is great.... Love you Marianne, your work has kept me company for decades... xo

  • As honest and intelligent an Artist who walked the walk. Her voice is the finest example of the sixth instrument as you will find. Her band are magic ! !

  • @candybrae1

her voice is spectacular after 46 years , and she is a legend, not a simple singer in the band

  • @fangiopiacentini ..she was great in the sixties....but not now. She just needs the money.

  • brutal. ick ick ick. so bad.

  • shes and old hag - no more mars bars

  • She has grown -she begins nervous and so vulnerable-then she gains in strength and charisma from her audience-the incredible baby Hapsburg-our beloved Lady Marianne- Lady Marianne

  • Much love and respect to Miss Faithfull- and, my guitar hero, Marc Ribot.

  • Bitch got some miles on her back....said with all due respect.

  • Boy she has guts too. Not like these NWO fluffy crap acts you get today

  • they say drug,, alcahol, smoke kill....well she's still alive and looking great after all the life she had....except the voice that changed but amazing still....

  • A Goddess amongst women.

  • well, the band was tight and kicked butt. marianne means well but that's not good enough.

  • @frankyforearmsnycnh Well good enough for a lot of people regarding all the comments... Oh well, you cannot make everyone happy they say....

  • This Lady has been hell and back and she is still standing

    A legend MS Faithfull xxxxxxxxxx

  • rockandroll`s voice!

  • Saw Marianne at the end of her recent world tour in Dublin recently & we were treated to classics such as The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan & As Tears Go By. How come old timers like Marianne & Leonard Cohen are putting the youngsters to shame. Oh hold on I've got it Marianne & Leonard have a huge thing caled natural talent.

  • Kind of insulting to Marianne that she was not even granted an interview prior to this stellar performance. Rather, this particular program was decicated to heated discussions with Bill O'Reilley. OMFG, bring this woman to the chair instead of that old fuck! Let the "I think we're out of time" be because of her appearance!

  • @worldtheatre I've never seen them interview a musical guest. They just perform a song at the end of the program. I'd also rather see an interview with her than Bill O'Riley, but it wasn't really insulting to her.

  • She murdered this song. She can't sing. If she was an average person and stood up and did this on a karaoke night people would just be embarrassed. She's living off of past glories. The Decemberists should never have let her do this, she even gets the lyrics wrong for christ sake...

  • @MrJontyF

    thats like...your opinion.

  • @concray and..?

  • lol... it's the lady off "The Memory Remains" by Metallica! lol. I am relieved to know that it was NOT in fact one of the guys from Metallica singing Marianne's parts...

  • great

  • Awesom

  • dont think much of the song but the music is great

  • She's had this voice for thirty years. Her 60s recordings are lovely, but her 'lived in' voice, shall we say, has so much more character and presence. Marianne is a very particular cup of tea.

  • @worldtheatre Excellent you have nailed the term perfectly, her "Lived in voice".

I didn't mind the young beauty of the sixties, but after the album Broken English came her street cred as far as I’m concerned.

  • @badbearness oh but her voice has depth and emotion. the beauty of 63 years of life.

  • She is perfect. Great!!!!

  • 'As Tears Go By' is NOT the song, but rather, the musical intro to Marianne performing The Decemberists' 'The Crane Wife 3." A phenomenal interpretation with Nick Cave doing background vocals on the original LP, on 'Easy Come, Easy Go.'

  • as tears go by is the song

  • wonderful band

  • You carry the weight she does on the industry and know the people she knows you can will a band together.

  • can someone please tell me the name of this tune?

  • The Crane Wife 3

  • she's perfect.

  • IVE TRAVELED THE STATES BY GREYHOUND WHENEVER I CAN TO SEE THE QUEEN OF ROCK NROLL...... SHE IS KILLER AND NO ONE LIKE HER TO COMPARE.... MARIANNE THnks for signing your autobiography for me outside irving plaza

    oxoxoxoxooxoxoxox

  • Marianne, like Deborah Harry, is a master in the genre of progressive music. They do thier best and work with the best.

  • this is a hell of a band (and on the record you get great jim white on drms) and i cant quite stand those "indie" or "purist" comments from people who dont even know marc ribot when they see him. OMG, give a break and go back to school willya?

  • Nikolaspearce -- sorry, friend, but you don't get itl. Faithfull has been "indie" probably way before you (or the Decemberists) were born. Read her book - listen to the music she's made over the last 45 yrs. She's as unique and totally "indie" an artist as you could possibly find. The woman holds a degree from The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics given to her by Allen Ginsburg. And you think Faithfull isn't hip enough to be heard in "a hipster coffee shop?" Educate yourself!

  • Unlike Brenda Jogger, she's for REAL ♥

  • This version was not 'indie' enough. The Decemberists are true indie music. Marianne Faithful is too old to be indie, therefore I don't like it. I only like music that is indie - you know, stuff that you would hear in a hipster coffee shop.

  • That a stupid comment.

  • that most likely the funniest thing i have read all day, what magazines thought you to say that? think that? lol

  • You're kidding right? She owns this song- and Broken English (her album) was so far ahead of it's time and a lot more dangerous than 1/2 of what my generation considers "indie"- I'm not old- but this chick deserves some respect dude.

  • @nikolaspearce

Heyyyyy....I see what you're doing there.

  • Beautiful artist but this song absolutley is the Decemberists

Her attempt was in my opionion not fitting of her but ehhh

Truly a testement if how good the decmberists really are

  • LOL! That's cool but Rock N Roll is going to remember her for a lot more than the Decemberists (I love that band but really- this woman changed a lot of things- way before my time- PJ Harvey says Marianne is the only female artists she cares about)

  • oh what a wonderful band!!!!!!!

  • good im a fan of her and a big stones fan but come on lave this song to the decemberist

  • somebody did a helluva job mixing the audio. Me with my bad ears hears everything.

  • She's FINALLY coming to Atlanta in October! Got my tickets over the weekend. I'll be on the front row.

  • I love marianne faithfull im 24 and i think she rocks just lovely

  • Give me a break Marianne is 62 years old and I think she did a hell of a job. The album is all cover songs. She is a legend and a classic. always will be. Why would you want her version to be like the Decemberists? I mean that would be boring! The purpose of covering a song is to give it a twist, add to it..Add the Marianne Faithfull side to it. I love it. i don't get people who expect to hear the exact same version when covering another artists song. Jeeez!

  • This is "The Crane Wife 3" by The Decemberists, and I respect the hell out of Marianne Faithfull, but the way they sped it up, and the lack of Colin Meloy's nasal and nerdy voice really destroys this song.

  • his voice is awful- her version makes it so sad

  • ...and who's the wonderful drummer???

  • Drummer : Joey Baron

  • She's in the song The Memory Remains by Metallica! :D

  • Simply Brilliant!

  • Marianne Faithful and that voice are indeed legend. Someone compared her to Leonard Cohen, but I would also suggest Tom Waits. Her delivery, the band, the song....brilliant. There's no autotuning, no artifice, just incredible music.

  • I think it is horrible how people judge her without knowing anything about her, or her voice, also I find her voice to be the ultimate in expressionism, which is all rock really is.

  • I think it horrible to allow people to not comment on the very band that made this song beautiful and not letting lamb chops and overly ambitious drummers and guitarist fudge this song. GO listen to the actual wonderful song PLEASE!!

  • The Decemberists have been with me for the last what 6 years. One of my favorite groups, which is why I was thrilled that Marianne Faithfull with Nick Cave covered this song on her most recent album. If one were to judge music simply from the 3 minute slot on Letterman, then I fear for the state of music.

  • well stated, nick cave performs this song with marianne on the album? how does it compare to this version? that sounds like a perfectly wonder-full combination, take care.

  • Watch it buddy. You don't know what you're talking about. Marc Ribot is one of the best guitarists alive (check out his years of work with Waits himself). And Ryan Scott on acoustic. Respect.

  • @CollinKelleyPoetry Dare I compare the older Marianne to the later material of a well worn by life Billy Holiday, beautiful but not light.

  • always faithful to Marianne Faithful a fan since 1965 ~ she sounds better than she ever did

  • a great song is a great song.

  • Love to see old rock chicks refusing to give up. Very inspiring. Plus what a great band she's assembled; love the guitar players in particular.

    Keep on keeping on Marianne!

  • This is a great song and I'm sure they have a lot of fun playing it, but it's not a very remarkable cover. It's too bad they drown out the string section with the same raucous guitar/bass/drums as the original.

  • I'm not familiar with Miss Faithfull's catalog, but I didn't think this was very good. If you're a fan of hers, you can probably appreciate her covering some really good artists, but I certainly wouldn't use this to induct people into her fan club.

  • a horrible version of a great song. what happened here?

  • Long live Rock n' Roll ,Joe Strummer and John Lennon !!! Marianne you define cool and great song too !!! Better than Rap,Madonna and Britney kids ,right?

  • heyu emily go away how old r u

  • Sorry she,s not a Boy Band Kiddo!

  • Yes, I am so obviously in love with boy bands.

  • Recognize the guitarist? think tom waits...

  • The guitarist is Marc Ribot.

  • No, it's Muddy Waters.

  • you're an idiot. marianne faithfull is a legend, and has had a long and storied career. Go back to watching hannah montana or something.

  • A world that existed before you - there was one! If you want to know why people are dissing you here, just google her and listen to some of her other and earlier work as well. Sometimes performing, and a singer's voice, is not just about a "pretty" sound but about the character and depth of experience and musical interpretation that develops over the years. Learn who this is first as opposed to just hating it w/o the facts. If it's not your thing, then, fine, but do your cultural homework.

  • OK I tried. It was a waste of time.

  • Cubachik's right: Sometimes performing, and a singer's voice, is not about a "pretty sound" but about character and depth. It's why you can get over Colin Melloy singing through his nose ... through a kazoo ... and hear a beautiful, powerful parable set to a dense, driving, stunning orchestral arrangement. MF was an emotionless bag of death set against an embarrassing "adult contemporary" elevator rock rearrangement that Michael McDonald would have rejected from a B-side album. This was terrible

  • Hi Christine...Erin sent me this link and I'm blown away! What a tremendous band!! Wow. What a pleasure it must be to play with this fine group and an amazing soulful talent like Marianne, (the female equivalent to the legendary Leonard Cohen). Best of luck!

    Ray

  • Beautiful. I like this much better than the original. Colin Meloy's voice, mehhh....

  • FTR: This is a cover, and to be honest, Faithfull's two pack a day voice ruins it. a shame because THE DECEMBERISTS really rock the hell out of it.

  • ohh god this is amazingg

  • that was a brilliant performance, the drums , guitars , all of it, thanks for sharing, cheers

  • first time i saw her was on "Girl on a motorcycle".

She was wearing a black leather suit, HOT!!

  • This is just so sweepingly beautiful! Marianne Faithfull and this rhythm and big band delivered two unforgettable shows at City Winery in NYC on the 27th and 28th of March. This is a glimpse of what was one of the most stupendous live sets ever!

  • How is it that The Stones haven't put out a good record in the past 25 years, but Marianne keeps getting better & better?

    Good on you, MF!

  • Saw this on Letterman last night.,........loved it.great to see her back.......and wow great drummer and overall band!

  • The drummer is Joey Baron. For me, he is the best drummer in the world. On Bass, it's Greg Cohen, electric guitar - Marc Ribot and Keyboards - Rob Burger. Some of the best musicians of NY downtown scene (and the world).

  • Indeed. I hardly noticed Marianne with all the amazing talent around her!

  • Thank you for sharing! Great new song!

  • quite good

  • My boy Ryan kicks ASS!!

    Stu-e-j

  • thank you!
