Honestly, is there anyone, anywhere, anytime, who can pull of a song like Marianne Faithful? What she is able to convey with her incredible voice is almost beyond comprehension. It is chilling. There aren't enough words to express her impact on music and on people's lives. Oh, and this band! omg! They are incredible!
amazing delivery of Marianne s.Don t know who dazzles me the most in this band. that drummer, the guy playing acoustic and doing some incredible backing vocals, what a tremendous job everybody! Fantastic musicians. amazing...
As honest and intelligent an Artist who walked the walk. Her voice is the finest example of the sixth instrument as you will find. Her band are magic ! !
She has grown -she begins nervous and so vulnerable-then she gains in strength and charisma from her audience-the incredible baby Hapsburg-our beloved Lady Marianne- Lady Marianne
they say drug,, alcahol, smoke kill....well she's still alive and looking great after all the life she had....except the voice that changed but amazing still....
Saw Marianne at the end of her recent world tour in Dublin recently & we were treated to classics such as The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan & As Tears Go By. How come old timers like Marianne & Leonard Cohen are putting the youngsters to shame. Oh hold on I've got it Marianne & Leonard have a huge thing caled natural talent.
Kind of insulting to Marianne that she was not even granted an interview prior to this stellar performance. Rather, this particular program was decicated to heated discussions with Bill O'Reilley. OMFG, bring this woman to the chair instead of that old fuck! Let the "I think we're out of time" be because of her appearance!
@worldtheatre I've never seen them interview a musical guest. They just perform a song at the end of the program. I'd also rather see an interview with her than Bill O'Riley, but it wasn't really insulting to her.
She murdered this song. She can't sing. If she was an average person and stood up and did this on a karaoke night people would just be embarrassed. She's living off of past glories. The Decemberists should never have let her do this, she even gets the lyrics wrong for christ sake...
lol... it's the lady off "The Memory Remains" by Metallica! lol. I am relieved to know that it was NOT in fact one of the guys from Metallica singing Marianne's parts...
She's had this voice for thirty years. Her 60s recordings are lovely, but her 'lived in' voice, shall we say, has so much more character and presence. Marianne is a very particular cup of tea.
'As Tears Go By' is NOT the song, but rather, the musical intro to Marianne performing The Decemberists' 'The Crane Wife 3." A phenomenal interpretation with Nick Cave doing background vocals on the original LP, on 'Easy Come, Easy Go.'
IVE TRAVELED THE STATES BY GREYHOUND WHENEVER I CAN TO SEE THE QUEEN OF ROCK NROLL...... SHE IS KILLER AND NO ONE LIKE HER TO COMPARE.... MARIANNE THnks for signing your autobiography for me outside irving plaza
this is a hell of a band (and on the record you get great jim white on drms) and i cant quite stand those "indie" or "purist" comments from people who dont even know marc ribot when they see him. OMG, give a break and go back to school willya?
Nikolaspearce -- sorry, friend, but you don't get itl. Faithfull has been "indie" probably way before you (or the Decemberists) were born. Read her book - listen to the music she's made over the last 45 yrs. She's as unique and totally "indie" an artist as you could possibly find. The woman holds a degree from The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics given to her by Allen Ginsburg. And you think Faithfull isn't hip enough to be heard in "a hipster coffee shop?" Educate yourself!
This version was not 'indie' enough. The Decemberists are true indie music. Marianne Faithful is too old to be indie, therefore I don't like it. I only like music that is indie - you know, stuff that you would hear in a hipster coffee shop.
You're kidding right? She owns this song- and Broken English (her album) was so far ahead of it's time and a lot more dangerous than 1/2 of what my generation considers "indie"- I'm not old- but this chick deserves some respect dude.
LOL! That's cool but Rock N Roll is going to remember her for a lot more than the Decemberists (I love that band but really- this woman changed a lot of things- way before my time- PJ Harvey says Marianne is the only female artists she cares about)
Give me a break Marianne is 62 years old and I think she did a hell of a job. The album is all cover songs. She is a legend and a classic. always will be. Why would you want her version to be like the Decemberists? I mean that would be boring! The purpose of covering a song is to give it a twist, add to it..Add the Marianne Faithfull side to it. I love it. i don't get people who expect to hear the exact same version when covering another artists song. Jeeez!
This is "The Crane Wife 3" by The Decemberists, and I respect the hell out of Marianne Faithfull, but the way they sped it up, and the lack of Colin Meloy's nasal and nerdy voice really destroys this song.
Marianne Faithful and that voice are indeed legend. Someone compared her to Leonard Cohen, but I would also suggest Tom Waits. Her delivery, the band, the song....brilliant. There's no autotuning, no artifice, just incredible music.
I think it is horrible how people judge her without knowing anything about her, or her voice, also I find her voice to be the ultimate in expressionism, which is all rock really is.
I think it horrible to allow people to not comment on the very band that made this song beautiful and not letting lamb chops and overly ambitious drummers and guitarist fudge this song. GO listen to the actual wonderful song PLEASE!!
The Decemberists have been with me for the last what 6 years. One of my favorite groups, which is why I was thrilled that Marianne Faithfull with Nick Cave covered this song on her most recent album. If one were to judge music simply from the 3 minute slot on Letterman, then I fear for the state of music.
well stated, nick cave performs this song with marianne on the album? how does it compare to this version? that sounds like a perfectly wonder-full combination, take care.
Watch it buddy. You don't know what you're talking about. Marc Ribot is one of the best guitarists alive (check out his years of work with Waits himself). And Ryan Scott on acoustic. Respect.
This is a great song and I'm sure they have a lot of fun playing it, but it's not a very remarkable cover. It's too bad they drown out the string section with the same raucous guitar/bass/drums as the original.

Cubachik's right: Sometimes performing, and a singer's voice, is not about a "pretty sound" but about character and depth. It's why you can get over Colin Melloy singing through his nose ... through a kazoo ... and hear a beautiful, powerful parable set to a dense, driving, stunning orchestral arrangement. MF was an emotionless bag of death set against an embarrassing "adult contemporary" elevator rock rearrangement that Michael McDonald would have rejected from a B-side album. This was terrible
Hi Christine...Erin sent me this link and I'm blown away! What a tremendous band!! Wow. What a pleasure it must be to play with this fine group and an amazing soulful talent like Marianne, (the female equivalent to the legendary Leonard Cohen). Best of luck!
