Construction has stalled to the north (Fountainbleu) and to the West (Eschelon Palace) due to bankruptcy leaving the only close walking options the Circus Circus to the West--the Hilton to the East and the Wynn/Encore to the South but even then thats a little of a trek in the wrong time of year in 100+ degree heat. Cabs are expensive in Vegas so if you are unfamiliar with the Bus/Monorail system or don't have a rental forget it..there is better locations for around the same $.
I stayed at the Riv in 2008. All in all a nice hotel, but that second hand smoke in the casino is an issue. Poor ventilation, I think. The hotel room was average. Kristoffer's Steak House was a bit pricey, but the food was amazing.
I have not stayed at the hotel myself but have been there many times, you can get a ticket on the deuce bus $7dollars for the day to get you up and down the strip and to Fremont downtown. cheapest casino's to gamble are El Cortez and the Western, cheapest beer is Hooters $1.50 Bud Light (Apart from the Sahara where it is a dollar + $1dollar blackjack tables). Mid Strip is the best place to hang out 4 nights in the Imperial Palace $90 and the rooms are good
Next time maybe you could show pics of a room, mention the bus shuttle people use, maybe describe the crowd sizes at the tables, talk about the Subway and Dennys right by it etc etc.

Don't think you're going to walk to Mandalay Bay from the Riviera, but the north end is walkable (to Stratosphere)

it's nothing special here at the riveria. Staff was mean and didn't want to bother with you.
