They got a massive amount of their money from looting of conquered cities and since they couldn't expand any further they coun't pay for soldiers(or at least good quality soldiers) which lead to the problem of being unable to expand because there were no troops to spare for conquering. They adopted the oval shield because it was better suited to counter the tactics used by Rome's enemies in the later times. Looser formations became the norm, which is why the longer Spatha took over gladius's role in the battlefield. Romans were simply adapting to the changing times.

The Romans adoptedmore mobile tactics as they required less training and less heavy armor which was costly (they stopped using far superior Lorica Segmentata). Scutum were not as useful in these late mobile tactics. Also Mobile soldiers were much more useful in Germania (while FAR less useful in the more open spaces of Italy or other places.)

I would tend not to look at the christianity: the eastern empire (so called Byzantin empire) that lasted quite longer and it was officially christian. Reasons are multiple, deeper and more complex as well as the roman society was complex. I would look into the economy and the separation of the layers of the roman society that were much more united under the early republic: SPQR means the Senate _and_ the people of Rome.

Explain how a religion would bring about the fall of an empire. Dude, the decline and stagnation of Rome as a whole,plus the absence of astute leaders were the reason its fall. Perhaps, you are right, it was because of ineffective rulers, economic problems, and military problems were the main reasons for the fall of the Western Empire, but Gibbon argued that it was Christianity who shook the social foundation of the Roman Empire, and this is true, it did disrupt the social system, and Heraclius was just one of many rulers on the Persian side and the Roman side who fought each other, and Persia probably would have then had a counter-attack like they always did.

Actually math and science can. A quanitative value can be placed on everything and algorhythmns can be interpreted. For now it wont be that accurate, but 200 years ago, it was even less accurate. Quantitative value does not explain things in totality. We have, therefore, different academic disciplines to make sense of reality better. Math and Science cannot account for political science or economics or history etc. That does not mean math and science are being undermined. The nature of the disciplines make things that way. Students of Social Science and Humanities feel undermined when some individuals elevate math and science beyond their limit at the expense of other disciplines.
