  • First of all. It was not called AMERICAN WEST. It was AMERICA WEST. Second of all, U.S AIRWAYS and AMERICA WEST merged together to create ONE!

  • I wasn't even born yet when this video was shot...I didn't even know who American West was until recently when I found out U.S Airways bought them.

  • Man - what a disaster those 747s' were for AW. Those aircraft - on top of the action over in Kuwait at the time - damn near destroyed the company !

  • Saw them at HNL the following year. Back then, AmWest even had some -400s on order.

  • I miss HP so very, very much. Wonderful airline. Thank you for this terrific rare footage.

  • Who pressed the dislike button? I'm going to press your head.

  • October 26, 1989 was delivery of first HP B747, tail number N531. Service to HNL began on November 16 of 1989. Second B747 N533 delivered 11/8/89. Third B747, N532 delivered 7/7/90. Fourth B747 delivered N534 delivered 8/16/90. Crewed with 16 flight attendants and one onboard Inflight service Manager. 747s were flown to; JFK, LAS, PHX, HNL and NGO and were also used extensively to fly US troops to and from 1st Gulf War.

  • I liked the sound especially :) Those JT-9s are awesome!

  • Nice vids, great work.

  • Instant nostalgia... man, I miss HP :(

  • i remember watching them take off

  • Great video, rare stuff. Does anyone know whose livery that is on the foreground a/c at 1:08? Looks like it could be 146, but I hear prop noises so perhaps a Dash 8?

  • @kfeyzi, it was an Air BC BAe 146-200.

  • Just saw this post on A.net. Absolutely love it! Fantastic!

  • Are those grunty engines PWs?

  • @kimon1977 Certainly looks like the JT9Ds...

  • WOW, America West 747-200, i really love it

  • Awesome! I had no idea that America West ever operated any 747s! Or that they had any long-haul routes to use them on.

  • what do you mean rare??

  • @vincentator2

Rare aka they were around for less than three years. So I'd consider videos exactly this: rare.

    Ryan,

thanks for all those brilliant videos from the past! Don't stop uploading them!

  • Great Video! Really like this one! :)

  • Didn't they put these on a route to Japan? Nagoya I think.

  • Amazing! Did it seem to you that the first one had a longer roll?

  • @mizzouluvr, much! That was the end of the runway that you see there when the gear is retracting

@Springbok295, I saw a comment on Airliners that stated Cactus 70 Heavy flew PHX-LAS-HNL-NGO

  • @RyanBomar yea wow the difference in the roll is huge, is it because of the weights or number of flaps? what causes this?
