I don't watch this show, but I really like Holo's voice in English. It sounds like a normal person's voice instead of some voice specifically made for an anime.
@AnimeYoukai911 I gotta ask, is it the normal edition, or that special green edition or whatever they've got on Amazon? I don't plan on buying it, I just wanna know the difference.

Oh, right. I've made a comic video featuring Spice and Wolf. It's in my channel. It's called "KH Birth by Sleep Parody 5: Feat. Spice and Wolf" Why don't you watch it? ;)
i honestly prefer the dub here over the original japanese, the voices just sound perfect for the characters. oh and to those of you saying holo's voice is too deep, there are LOTS of 15 year old girls with voices that deep
Everyone's subjective valuations here are wrong except mine. My valuation is somehow more valid than others for no adequately explained reason so I feel the justified need to proclaim that valuation loudly while insulting all who disagree, for they are wrong.

Blurg. Sorry, this dub isn't doing it for me. I think that Horo sounds way too old, since she's supposed to sound like a fifteen year-old girl, but she sounds like a thirty-something. Sure, making her sound older would imply that she is wise beyond her years and all that (which she is, compared to her appearance), but the thing is that she's taken on the body of a young girl, so it should change the way she sounds, too.
My mind might change once I see them flirt a bit, though.
Well of course the Japanese are better! Seriously the Japanese work much much harder on voice acting in Japan. Not bad of a dub. I'm not really a fan of dubs either. But this is ok. Doesn't Holo's voice sound a bit too low for someone who forms in a 15 year-old body?
@GlaciusNLV I really despise people like you who think that American Voice actors seem to all 'suck' at what they do. There are some incredibly bad dubs out there, I will agree-- however, are YOU getting paid to voice over anime or cartoons? And do you honestly think you could do it any better? I highly doubt it. If you don't like it- don't watch, and keep your meaningless comments to yourself.
Actually I get paid to voice documentaries in Japan. (OMG right?) But that's totally beside the point. I don't have to be a master chef to know when food tastes bad. So just because I'm not producing the dubs for anime does not mean I don't know bad acting when I hear it. This isn't a good argument to get into with someone who has an M.F.A. in film production. And honestly yes I could to better than 90% of the voice actors dubbing anime. Funimation should top hiring DJs.
@GlaciusNLV Don't bloat about your M.F.A. in film production. I'm a student in a Film and Media Academy at our high school but I don't bloat about that. It's informal, just to gives you a heads up. However, to me, this voice acting is significant to the anime's overall theme. It's a Renaissance theme; if you look at the original Japanese voice acting, it doesn't suit the theme. Try THOROUGHLY examining the different versions, don't bluntly judge.
@Zennerick There's a pretty solid difference between a kid and high school and someone who has a the highest degree attainable in film and is working in the field of voice in JAPAN. Bad acting is bad acting. The reason why voice acting is so bad in American dubs is because they're using cheap novice talent. Talk to me when you've got some life experience and I might give you some credit.
@GlaciusNLV Sounds like you're a japanophile. Of course you'll support Japanese voice actors. Japanese VAs are all pretty good but they're sometimes they just pick the wrong voice for the role. This is probably one of the better dubs available. Brina Palencia can sound teasing and her voice for Holo makes Holo sound elegant and classy. Personally, I can't stand the generic high pitched voice actors usually assigned female characters like Holo.
@deatharch Not really a Japanophile, its really more of a love hate relationship with this country. Brina is decent but her voice of voice doesn't fit the character at all. I had honestly hoped she would have done a better job. The character Horo is mostly a mischief maker who pretends she's noble. This comes through more in the Japanese version than in English. It's a giant miss on Funimation's interpretation of the character. And a mistake they make far too often.
@Zennerick I am so tired of people constantly complaining about dub voices in ALL animes, even dubs that are great, and always talking about how,"oh this'll NEVER be as good as the Japanese dub,its inferior." How can you compare two things that are in two different languages, they're gonna be somewhat different. The only time where complaining about a dub is justified is when its horrible(like a 4kids dub)
Actually I get paid to voice documentaries in Japan. (OMG right?) But that's totally beside the point. I don't have to be a master chef to know when food tastes bad. So just because I'm not producing the dubs for anime does not mean I don't know bad acting when I hear it. This isn't a good argument to get into with someone who has an M.F.A. in film production. maybe it's spelled Holo but pronounced Horo? anyway, this seems to be a pretty good dub, though like everyone else here it seems quite...different from what I was expecting. Probably people who start off with the dub wouldn't notice anything
Her name is holo or horo? It's holo right? Cause they way japan pernounces using R two replace the L.......so in english...holo.....-goes 2 wiki-.....holoooooo is da winnerrr....correct me if any of ya want..? but show proof
@MariusNightvale they've already said it's Holo. They talked to the studio and confirmed that her actual name was Holo. I think they also confirmed that with the creator to avoid these kind of issues.
If you're talking about the author of the light novel (original creation), then he had Holo in his mind. Ranma 1/2 is a good example. When they pronounce that name, it sounds like Lanma, but the actual name is pronounce Ranma. That's because of their sound system.
@MariusNightvale you should know that most Japanese know English very well and write it better than a lot of Americans, but they suck at pronouncing it because of the accent. Like "sukuurudo" is the way for them to pronounce "school." They know what it is, but they can't pronounce it. Also, their writing system stops them from pronouncing it right when they know how to make the right accent. We hispanics would usually pronounce it either "escol" or "escul" if we were just to read it.
we use the @ symbol (at) because sometimes when someone replies to a comment, that person may be referring to person A but the uploader (in this case, you) will get comments and replies as comments alone. Ex: if I were to reply to someone and say something rude to that person for what he/she said, you might think it's meant for you since you'll get it as a comment. Also, when the first page is shown, the comments are scatter all over the place and only recent ones will appear.
@MariusNightvale you can say it's a habit. Also, if you have the latest update for your browser (firefox, in my case), then the @ symbol will appear automatically along with the nickname of the person you're replying to. You can say youtube heard the complains of people about how unorganized the comment section was. It works better on more popular videos where you get comments every minute or even seconds.
@MariusNightvale Youtube puts the @ people thing on some comments automatically. Most people don't do that on purpose. Don't ask me why youtube does that. I have no idea.
In my imagination Lawrence sounds too old and mellow, not so young and wiley...XD. Horo has a good voice actress, but again, a little too mature-sounding.
I like Horo's voice, but it seems kind of mature. She is supposed to be a 15 year old girl while she's in that form, and I certainly don't know any fifteen year old's that talk like that. xD But I like it. I think that's as perfect as we'll ever get and it does suit her.
Oh goodness. :) I do believe this is one of the only dubs I will actually enjoy -- other than Eureka 7, of course, which was a voice-acting masterpiece.~
you know what sucks...when you watch one season in dub then you have to watch the rest in sub. it sounds so wierd cause i just finished season 1 dub and now im watching season 2 sub, idk when they will dub it, i hope very soon!!!!
Holo sounds almost perfect (i'm nit picky...). Lawrence sounds a little manlier than I think he should...BUT I like it. He sounds sexy. Overall I'm not disappointed at all :]
wow usually I don't like dubs I've been watching the Japanese version of this and personally I prefer the dub of this anime it brings more of a European feel to it since this is suppose to be based in Europe. This was written by a Japanese person however I feel the anime is influenced a bit with Japanese personality and culture which sometimes makes me forget where this anime should take place.
I still dont think that American street English has any European sensation apart from the fact that English is an European language. besides the dub doesnt sound particularly "European", if they talk like how the actors talk in Lord of the Rings, than maybe it would some European........
@jimmyjamesWang Well, they'd probably have European accents if Funimation was really going for that feel, which I think they were not, because they ARE an American company and therefore hiring English voice-actors would be too costly and certainly a hassle.
In general original Japanese language is better for anime I don't need to use sub. This is such a European feel anime I just thought it would be better to have it in a European language for the feel. Its still good as the Japanese dub though.
Horo sounds a lot more serious than she should, and the voice seems to be a bit older than I wanted to hear.
Lawrence's voice actor is excellent, and other than Horo's voice actor's shortcomings, the dub is actually very well done.
I have the DvD, and I'm just glad they kept the original Japanese dub with subtitles. Either way, if you like the anime, this is a definite buy. Get it.
@ParadigmShiftr This is just a hunch, but they may have deepened Horo's voice a bit to make her seem older and more acceptable to a general Western audience. Any voice that suggests she's as young as she looks might put off some people, as flirty as she is with a man who appears much older. (which, yes, I realize he isn't!)
@ParadigmShiftr No she really doesn't because it is often sarcasm and mockery that is intended to be taken seriously until revealed otherwise. I like that she has an air of seriousness. It makes her character much more appealing. She's over 700 years old for god's sake she should sound mature.
And yes, whoever did Craft Lawrence did a wonderful job. :)
Sorry to hear people still hate dubbed anime, although the emotion isn't always as strong as the Japanese versions, I still find them enjoyable. Not to mention Im a fan of a lot of american voice actors/ress.
With that said, I purchased this DVD and got it. During this trailer, I didn't think Holo's voice suited her at all. But after watching a few episodes, I honestly feel she's the best suited for the role IMO. She did a great job expressiong Holo and any dub watchers will enjoy it.
Lawrence sounds fine. Horo is a bit too serious sounding, but I think she will sound better as the series goes along.
On a side note, I thought her name was spelled Holo but pronounced Horo. This person actually says Holo. I hope they're not planning on changing her name.
I like Lawrence's voice and it suits him in a way. But Holo/Horo sounds odd to me. Much too old considering she's "taken on the form of a 15 year old girl." The voice doesn't match well with that image. But the gentle sound of the girls voice does sound like she is wise... but I still don't see it as Holo/Horo...
not the worst dub I've heard, but it's not the best either.
@Anza i can kinda understand what yuor saying. in the manga she has a bit of a childish personality not in a immature sense or anything, just by the way she jokes with lawrance. i wasn't really expecting her dub voice to sound so serious. the voice doesn't fit how she is portrayed to be in the manga. we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out:P
on another note i've heard 15 girls with voices like that.
Either try FUNimation's site, or their YouTube page. Not sure where the rest can be found, but I'm sure it's out there, I just don't much care for the dub.
no good. Definitely no good. Well, of course, this trailer alone didn't show horo's playful side. All i heard is the flat, flat, flat, mature voice. Koshimizu is still the only horo for me.
As for lawrence, a charismatic voice is his trait (like many others voiced by fukuyama). This english one definitely lacks it.
So if i had to judge from this trailer alone, gotta say it's a failure.
I've seen the seasons 1 and 2 (too impatient to wait for dub release though I'll watch those too.) and it's a winner. It goes against the grain for there being big mystical fight scenes and him being shy and not coming on to her and etc. and it does all that very well. As a guy who likes action and have seen all episodes (minus that ova episode 0 of season 2 I'm still searching 4) I can honestly say I have never b4 been intertain by something like this.
So on the FUNimation site, they have the first two episodes up, but now they're swf instead of flv, and I'm not smart enough to... I want to say "Have them in a watchable format", but that just sounds bad. So, yeah.

GlaciusNLV 1 year ago
@GlaciusNLV Sounds like you're a japanophile. Of course you'll support Japanese voice actors. Japanese VAs are all pretty good but they're sometimes they just pick the wrong voice for the role. This is probably one of the better dubs available. Brina Palencia can sound teasing and her voice for Holo makes Holo sound elegant and classy. Personally, I can't stand the generic high pitched voice actors usually assigned female characters like Holo.
deatharch 1 year ago
@deatharch Her Japanese VA sounds sublime, don't go suggesting otherwise.
MariusNightvale 1 year ago

And honestly yes I could do better than 90% of the voice actors dubbing anime. Funimation should top hiring DJs.

maybe it's spelled Holo but pronounced Horo? anyway, this seems to be a pretty good dub, though like everyone else here it seems quite...different from what I was expecting. Probably people who start off with the dub wouldn't notice anything

It's Horo.

@MariusNightvale they've already said it's Holo. They talked to the studio and confirmed that her actual name was Holo. I think they also confirmed that with the creator to avoid these kind of issues.

@salvigirlisme it is indeed Holo. I tried checking several place, including wikipedia, and it's Holo.
elgato8569 2 years ago
It's Horo or you all get your comments removed.
MariusNightvale 2 years ago
hahaha I like Horo better too. Too bad the manga hasn't progressed that much.
elgato8569 2 years ago
It's not that I like it better, it's just that that's what it is. I don't trust someone who can't speak any English to make the decision for me.
MariusNightvale 2 years ago
If you're talking about the author of the light novel (original creation), then he had Holo in his mind. Ranma 1/2 is a good example. When they pronounce that name, it sounds like Lanma, but the actual name is pronounce Ranma. That's because of their sound system.
elgato8569 2 years ago
Do I care what he had in mind? He still can't speak english, nor does he realize how vastly superior Horo is, for several reasons.
MariusNightvale 2 years ago
@MariusNightvale you should know that most Japanese know English very well and write it better than a lot of Americans, but they suck at pronouncing it because of the accent. Like "sukuurudo" is the way for them to pronounce "school." They know what it is, but they can't pronounce it. Also, their writing system stops them from pronouncing it right when they know how to make the right accent. We hispanics would usually pronounce it either "escol" or "escul" if we were just to read it.
elgato8569 2 years ago
Why do people say @people? This isn't Twitter, goddammit.
MariusNightvale 2 years ago
we use the @ symbol (at) because sometimes when someone replies to a comment, that person may be referring to person A but the uploader (in this case, you) will get comments and replies as comments alone. Ex: if I were to reply to someone and say something rude to that person for what he/she said, you might think it's meant for you since you'll get it as a comment. Also, when the first page is shown, the comments are scatter all over the place and only recent ones will appear.
elgato8569 2 years ago
Makes sense, but it hasn't done it at all for this video.
MariusNightvale 2 years ago
@MariusNightvale you can say it's a habit. Also, if you have the latest update for your browser (firefox, in my case), then the @ symbol will appear automatically along with the nickname of the person you're replying to. You can say youtube heard the complains of people about how unorganized the comment section was. It works better on more popular videos where you get comments every minute or even seconds.

In my imagination Lawrence sounds too old and mellow, not so young and wiley...XD. Horo has a good voice actress, but again, a little too mature-sounding.
adorima 2 years ago
Maybe around the second season, she'll loosen up?
Angeliclily 2 years ago
I like Horo's voice, but it seems kind of mature. She is supposed to be a 15 year old girl while she's in that form, and I certainly don't know any fifteen year old's that talk like that. xD But I like it. I think that's as perfect as we'll ever get and it does suit her.

Holo sounds almost perfect (i'm nit picky...). Lawrence sounds a little manlier than I think he should...BUT I like it. He sounds sexy. Overall I'm not disappointed at all :]
nutrigrainbar47 2 years ago
wow usually I don't like dubs I've been watching the Japanese version of this and personally I prefer the dub of this anime it brings more of a European feel to it since this is suppose to be based in Europe. This was written by a Japanese person however I feel the anime is influenced a bit with Japanese personality and culture which sometimes makes me forget where this anime should take place.
chaotickitty222 2 years ago
I still dont think that American street English has any European sensation apart from the fact that English is an European language. besides the dub doesnt sound particularly "European", if they talk like how the actors talk in Lord of the Rings, than maybe it would some European........
jimmyjamesWang 2 years ago
@jimmyjamesWang Well, they'd probably have European accents if Funimation was really going for that feel, which I think they were not, because they ARE an American company and therefore hiring English voice-actors would be too costly and certainly a hassle.
TTINUHPLOTR 2 years ago
@chaotickitty222 Personally I like the sub a lot just because Jun Fukuyama does Lawrence.
HeyImaVampire 2 years ago
In general original Japanese language is better for anime I don't need to use sub. This is such a European feel anime I just thought it would be better to have it in a European language for the feel. Its still good as the Japanese dub though.
chaotickitty222 2 years ago
Horo sounds a lot more serious than she should, and the voice seems to be a bit older than I wanted to hear.
Lawrence's voice actor is excellent, and other than Horo's voice actor's shortcomings, the dub is actually very well done.
I have the DvD, and I'm just glad they kept the original Japanese dub with subtitles. Either way, if you like the anime, this is a definite buy. Get it.

@ParadigmShiftr hey its the whole first season right? and how much did it cost you?
surdect 2 years ago
@surdect
Was supposed to be $17.30 but they jacked it up to $48 right before the holiday season.
ParadigmShiftr 2 years ago
@ParadigmShiftr DAMN! from 17.30 to 48! wow that aint right for only 13 eps >.> well ok thanks for the info bro
surdect 2 years ago
@ParadigmShiftr This is just a hunch, but they may have deepened Horo's voice a bit to make her seem older and more acceptable to a general Western audience. Any voice that suggests she's as young as she looks might put off some people, as flirty as she is with a man who appears much older. (which, yes, I realize he isn't!)
TTINUHPLOTR 2 years ago
@ParadigmShiftr damn right....but i dont have the dvd...lol
jennylover456 1 year ago
@ParadigmShiftr No she really doesn't because it is often sarcasm and mockery that is intended to be taken seriously until revealed otherwise. I like that she has an air of seriousness. It makes her character much more appealing. She's over 700 years old for god's sake she should sound mature.
And yes, whoever did Craft Lawrence did a wonderful job. :)
R1ckr011 1 year ago

Bad dub as always.
mckoten367 2 years ago
I like Lawrence's voice and it suits him in a way. But Holo/Horo sounds odd to me. Much too old considering she's "taken on the form of a 15 year old girl." The voice doesn't match well with that image. But the gentle sound of the girls voice does sound like she is wise... but I still don't see it as Holo/Horo...
not the worst dub I've heard, but it's not the best either.
Anza 2 years ago
@Anza i can kinda understand what yuor saying. in the manga she has a bit of a childish personality not in a immature sense or anything, just by the way she jokes with lawrance. i wasn't really expecting her dub voice to sound so serious. the voice doesn't fit how she is portrayed to be in the manga. we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out:P
on another note i've heard 15 girls with voices like that.
outlaw0987654321 2 years ago
To me she sounds like a 15 year old girl who is wise beyond her years. In other words, I have no problems with her dub voice as of yet.
killifish2000 2 years ago
@Anza lol after listening to the trailer again i take back what i said. that voice can work fine.

MariusNightvale 2 years ago
So if i had to judge from this trailer alone, gotta say it's a failure.
s4pil4ut 2 years ago
Don't.
