  • An impressive sound. Haven't heard of this artist and cant find wiki info. Almost a helden tenor I would say. Very nice machine you have there too - I think there's one on gumtree at the moment for GBP60 !

  • @johnster1964 Did you spell his name correctly? There's a Wikipedia article about him. He was a major, well known singer.

  • I wonder if the accompanying recitative,Comfort ye!

    is on the other side?

It would be nice if you posted that one too since the sound from the horn is so beautiful. Impossible to compare with the cd-sound which is clean but cold.

  • "Arguably the best recorded version ..."

Not "arguably": Decisively, conclusively THE best version, on Angel-U.S. mid-'50s. To get the full rich golden gusto, you need that big Blaupunkt console AM/FM/SW-STEREO with master-blaster speakers and *tubes* for full range @ high volume. A.S. had the pipes and the heart to give it heavenly life. It's only over the years, as I've heard the others that his greatness has emerged in bold relief. Big voice, big heart, big man.

  • An exultant, ringing rendition .. with the note values SECURE, up and down the scale. Would like to listen to Vickers, Bostridge and others .. but the Schiotz performance shows what a LOSS it was, to have him leave the recording mikes, at a somewhat-early age. .. Many thanks, merrihew!

  • The tempo is too slow; apparently Beecham is not in charge! However, I love the singing and the beautiful voice of this very gifted tenor. Thanks for sharing.

  • @meltzerboy Does not that record say Mogens Woldicke as conductor?

  • @valdengo1 Yes it does. I meant Beecham is NOT the conductor, because if he were, the tempo would have probably been sprightlier.

  • @meltzerboy - (tempos) - Not to be overly-contentious, but a Woldike tempo is probably as good as a Beecham one. The VITAL parts are the aria, itself ... Schiotz's unique interpretation and timbre ... and the orchestral "pushes"/support. I still say the first part is MET by the 2nd (Schiotz), and Woldike left many, fine recordings ... although Beecham's way would have been VERY-individual. ... Enough of picking-apart such a fine, enduring recording/upload .... and hope that all had a great Xmas!

  • Marvellous singing!

Thank you for posting this treasure.

  • Great!

  • There is puissance in his singing born of an inner glow.

    Heartfelt thanks for this preciosity.

  • Respect! That's a rather slow tempo, andante, and he don't breathe at all. My compliments!

  • This was the first performance of this I ever heard and it's still the standard which other singers have yet to meet. Others have mentioned Schiǿtz's wonderful legato, and this is true. What is missing from the recording is the aspiration which inflicts most other tenors in this aria. Everything about this perfomance...the singing, the diction, the rock-solid tempi...is magnificent.

  • Wow, I have heard quite a few different recordings of Every Valley...this is by far the best. Both the video sound and the singing quality are amazing and much better than almost anything I have yet come across.

  • This is an electrical recording, and I assume the sound track was created with an electrical pickup and a more modern turntable than the acoustical turntable shown in the video.

  • No, you're hearing acoustic reproduction picked up by a microphone about 10 ft. from the horn.

  • Interesting, I'm surprised it's as good as it is. I don't have an acoustic phonograph so I can't conduct a test on my own, but I would assume (and maybe I'm assuming wrong) that playing it though an electrical pickup would produce even better results.

  • It depends on how well the recording was made. Records from about 1932 and earlier sound better on this machine. Later records such as this one (with greater frequency range) sound better on modern equipment. I use the orthophonic for visual interest. Sometimes I post with my modern system. I won't play perfect condition records on the old machine.

  • The sweetness of Heddle Nash and the colour of Walter Widdop,2 great English tenors of the 30s and 40s plus the clarity of diction to make you forget he was Danish rather than an Anglo Saxon born singer

quite0 excellent and a fine example of Handel singing

  • Completely unknown to me but marvellous what a little browsing can bring forth. Beautiful rendition

  • The wonders of youtube!

  • love shiotz...this recording is one of my faves...exquisitely colored, beautiful legato thanks for posting...never expected it to show up on youtube

  • I think I must have listened to this recording about a 100 times! My no. 1 favourite tenor! I also read his memoirs. (I am a Swede but I understand Danish.)He also played a part in the old Danish film "Jeg har levet og elsket" (I have live and loved.)Where he portrays a very mischiveous and happy singer! (not the main role. But it is HIM you remember.)In Denmark he used to be sort of a national hero (symbol of the resistance against the nazi occupation.)

  • Aksel Schiotz sang this one with a beautiful lyric tenor voice, and perfect breath control. His diction was clear and elegant. I thought the orchestra provided the necessary dynamic accompaniment without competing with the singer. Wow! This one is difficult to be outdone!!

  • This record is from 1942 or 1943, should check exact date. A superb disc on my uploading list as well - thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks for that info. I assumed that there was a way to do it but I was lazy.

  • Sorry, I was mistaken after all, it's a bit older: 1940. I tried to post a video response with my complete repredoduction of the record (both sides), but apparently it went wrong (internal server error 500), it simply ended up on my channel without link.

  • i've never heard him sing in english. thank you for this post. alt.key + 0248 = ø
