  • yeh, what a stupid people! :S

  • wow this is freakin amazing. i can't believe i missed this one. i have it written in the contract that total cost has been set assuming the meal for a dj and helper (or helpers depending on the package) have been included. it also says that if it is not, to notify us immediately. with that said, i don't like to eat a full plate at the venue, but i make sure that my guys are good to go. i guess it goes back to my ahtletic days, but nerves and just the overall performance doesn't allow it.

  • Wow that sucks, will have to keep that in mind from now on.

  • wtf! thats just wrong john!! you were kind enough to play for them w/o food :s. i wouldnt! lol i love food! :D

  • ha! here in adelaide you're lucky if they even remember to offer you a glass of water!

  • This is something I never expect the wedding party to provide. I vary rarely touch a buffet a parties as well. even though I often get many people telling me to get something.

That said, if food is offered and accepted, it it only courtesy of the venue etc to make sure you are aware it is ready.

This situation is probaly rare but just makes the hotel staff look amateur. If they can't see you are working when they serve your meal, they probalby can't tell the difference from their face and arse.

  • Wow that sucks for you. I'm Glad you got your money back. I think I am the exception to the rule here int he US. I have only eaten at events twice. Get lots of offers but always turn them down.

  • Good Video I know here in the United States Most of the D.J. get there Meal at Weddings . I always ask at the contract signing just in case. Sorry that happen to you. Some people don't have a clue.

  • this is a massive fail on the managers part who said that they would provide you with a meal after serving the main party, Now i'm assuming that everyone else (in the bridal party) got feed henceforth the manager should have told you that your meal was ready or at lest notified you if there was going to be a delay or problem.

Since you paid for your meal I would expect some level of courtesy, service and professionalism from the venue management.

** I'm glad you got your money back too

  • Had to watch this again , classic, digg the glasses , where can I get sine if those

  • I think you should name and shame the venue and the gardener lol

  • What tight ass's!

  • Not feeding the DJ is pretty unfair because sometimes wed have to setup our equipment around 5pm for a 7pm reception. Given circumstances wed have to leave home early and even before that pack our gear about 1-2 hours before leaving (Roughly 2pm). So the last meal wed have would be our breakfast (If lucky some lunch). So if the DJ doesnt get fed during the reception, the DJ wouldnt have eaten for over 12 hours (Thats half a day).

  • Even here when the client pays for a meal, probably 50% of the time the venue doesn't end up supplying it anyway. I never say anything about it, I see getting fed as a bonus. As for djmarkcotter's comment, you are probably charging three times as much as Australian DJs anyway. I gan guarantee I can eat a meal quicker than you can go out and have a smoke in your car. I think its far more professional to stay near your console and eat one course of a meal, than run off outside to have a smoke.

  • All right let me explain a way they have yo give you the meal.

Make the clause under a health and safety section and explain that you have been at the venue for over 6 hours.

One question john, did they havve a videographer who stayed all night and if so did they feed him?

  • You cracked a shit venue Johnny Boy... It is a legal requirement in Victoria to supply all staff and contractors with "Rider" meals. How much you choose to push the issue is dependent on how much you are prepared to possibly lose in ongoing work. Its actually the venues responsibility to supply the meal, they usually pass the cost on to the client though.

  • My own contract says "Event manager MUST PROVIDE A MEAL TO BOTH THE DJ AND OTHER HIRED STAFF" add it and make a point of it people have tried to screw me out of a meal in the US. Normally i don't require it but on a long gig I do as does any one.

  • that's pretty low, at least you got your money back. I always have an emergency supply of fruit snacks just in case things like that happen. (fruit snacks basically never expire, they are like twinkies)

  • you look like MOBY LOL!

  • I used to sell full sized arcade games to private individuals. One time I delivered one, set it up and was then fed dinner by the client!

Likewise, a friend of mine installs Mini-Satellite Dishes, on more than one occasion, he has installed them, and was then fed by the customers!

This gardener ... has he never had anyone offer him at least a glass of iced tea while he's working?! He could really use a change in perspective.

  • I usually dont like to have dinner at weddings and parties.... ever since one time, one of my clients asked for a free hour after the party was over, I said its more money he said " Aaahw Come on dude we even took care of you , you even had dinner man"

Dude I felt soo bad like if I was working for Charity like if I was asking them for food , so I told the guy you know what I dont need your shitty money , so I pulled the plug on the party & went home ..ever since I eat at home before.

  • I feel bad too, i usually try and hide while I eat. Most of the dinners are great at weddings any way, you dont know what your missing!

  • omg its 1 day out of the week,,, its not like you DJ a wedding everyday? bring some snacks! hide them under your DJ booth! i usually never have time to eat during a gig,,, i work during the dinner, take requests meet people, go around personally to each table and introduce myself, pass out music request cards... or just go out to the car and have a cig! if i really have to eat ill grab a dinner roll or something quick, but it really disrupts my performance if I sit down and eat a full meal.

  • what a tight basterd and sounds like a lousy restraunt aswell

  • I think that when people are paying for your services they don't think you should eat if your requiring it. But most of the time I don't have time to eat. But when its like that they bring the meal to me. People get up tight if they think they have to cater to the dj when they are paying for you to be there. I eat before hand and skip the meal whether its offer or not. Unless they might get offended then I eat but not until then.

    Lee :)

  • You should have waited until the party was really rockin out and announced that you will be taking a half hour break to go down the street to eat....hahaha!..Great story, and has never happened to me. I have never had to ask for a meal.

  • That's the funniest Dj story I ever heard

  • no mate never came across this, must just be a weird venue lol, so what company are you starting mate.?

  • different type of video....but the main question is what new company? is it going to be like A1PartyDJs

    thanks Rich

  • Never heard of anything like that before but these thins happen just not very offten lol So whats the new company your starting up? Nice vid 5 starts!

  • thank god you got your $40 back

i would of been pissed and would of not left. i hate those type of venue managers

  • thats so cheap on the grooms hehalf!! i did a gig where the groom couldent afford to pay for the 3rd hr but he still managed to pay for my meal, so i decided to do the 3rd hr free, but u r giveing up your time to make the wedding run smooth so the least they could do is give u a meal its pretty basic stuff!!

  • Happened once to me(25 years ago) when I did a live music gig for the wealthest family in town. our band was told we were "servants" and were not allowed to mingle or eat with the guests. They gave us each a can of soda. Next time I vow to order a pizza delivery.

  • As my mother always said, they didn 't get rich by spending money on the "servants". lol What a bunch of arseholes.

  • I would eat before I went, and when I got back ... probably take a prawn baguette or something of my own.

It is in UK Contracts also that if the DJ is working over 3 hours etc, then refreshments must be provided, but whether or not you want them, is entirely up to you.

  • so is this a national contract or is this just in your own contract??, is its a national one were could i find such a contract? thanks, rob

  • yeah $40 isnt a small amount...

  • lol john you never fail to teach me something =D

  • As soon as you mentioned the "after the last table is served, your dinner will be served here at the bar" I had a feeling where this was going.

Guess he expected that you might just pop in a mixed cd and let the party go on auto-pilot or something...

  • What happened to ordering the pizza ? LOL

Yer john thats sad sad sad , on the groomes part and the venues part , i normally get meals drink etc at everything i work at except when i dj @ the pub normally a 9pm - 1am gig get a few free beers or all the fizzie you can sorta thing .

But as for mobile i have never had a problem .

Good luck with the new dj bizzniss .

  • I should also add that the only time i have any meal problems at venues it is usually because the venue has lost money because the client didn't book the "prefered" dj. I use that term loosely. We have quite a few DJ's up here who either pay booking fees to the venues or do dirt cheap packages that the venue onsells to their client at a premium. But sometimes the client books someone else and the venue looses the cash and has an attitude. I just give attitude back to those venues they soon learn

  • Id love to know the name of this venue and no no no thats never happened to me. What I dont get is that if YOU had to pay for yourself, why did you hafto wait, thats bullshit to the max, I mean you dont go to a restaurant pay and have them say to you (when everyone ells finishes eating then ill serve you) dont you think.

  • It may happen in other countries, but here in oz it is unheard of....BYO meal & drink!!!! Bullshit! It is ALWAYS supplied, even cocktail style food is usually supplied to us if the wait staff are any good. I also can't believe the tight-arsed groom's attitude, what a dickhead! I hope you didn't do them any 'favours'. They certainly didn't do you any....

Time to get back in your own saddle John. Cheers.

  • definitely a lesson in making sure all agreements are made and understood before hand. every entertainer either needs to learn the hard way and get in a squable with the venue or be professional and know all aspects of their involvement in the event. good video, mate.

  • I never rely on the venue to supple a meal, i always have a bag with food and drink in to keep me going all night......

  • That manager would have ended up on his ass if he came at me with that attitude. I had a run in with one silly mole a little while ago who actually tried to shaft me regarding a meal but it backfired the groom asked if i had been fed and i said no so he went and gave it to the manger and had her in tears. Venues have to realise that they are not our client and they need us too. I get asked at expos all the time what venues are good i tell them to stay away from the ones who treat us bad.

  • I would have demand my money back and told The venue to kiss my ASS... I would have compLAIN to the owner of the venue... they should have served you first.. you should have told the server plus maybe tip them... call owner of venue and tell him to kiss you ass... DJ Partmaster
