In "The God Delusion,:Dawkins says nothing of the context of his young friends claim to have heard the voice of the devil. Did he hear intelligible words or just strange cackels? We're not told. And he offers up the Manx Shearwater as the obvious explanation, with no context whatsoever. It is quite typical of most everything Dawkins offers in the book.

I haven't read God Delusion (I've got The Selfish Gene on my bookshelf but haven't got round to reading it yet), but if you listen to a group of Shearwaters coming home in the evening, it does sound very eerie indeed. If you go to the wikipedia page there's a link to a recording, and it's a beautiful sound. I would love to put some music to a recording of these birds, I haven't heard anything that nice for a long time. I think you'd need an overactive imagination to think it's the devil though!

I also searched for this video because of Richard Dawkins, and quite frankly, I'm going to have nightmares about the sound this bird makes for the rest of my life. From 1:50 to about 4:00 it's nothing but constant howling, and it's the most terrifying noise I've ever heard in my life.
