As a gay man, I think it would be stupid to get bert and ernie to marry for various reasons. one being the audience is TOO YOUNG to be put into the world of romance and sexuality. Sure, you can make them gay, but children need to learn more important things than this. Leave gay rights stuff in shows like Glee or iCarly, where the audience is nearer to the right age to learn about this stuff.
