IGS is ILS modified for use at Kai Tak because of the non-straight-in approach. The plane is guided towards the checkerboard after which the pilot makes a 47-degree right turn visually to align with the runway.
Simplified. The approach used to fly down a modified electronic approach to a point in the air and then the pilots would use this checkerboard on the side of the hill to help navigate the rest of the way to the airport.
Before you all get wrapped around an axle. This is just a historical video shot for the checkerboard used on the approach to the old Hong Kong airport. It's for reference in a wiki article on the airport.
airboydm your videos are FANTASTIC.. thank god the internet! love watching them. One question - did you ever go up to checkerboard hill? or could you? hopefully i'll one day get up there :)

This checkerboard should be restored and kept in good conditions as farewell to the Kai Tak Airport.

Too bad it's not. It's all dilapidated and run-down now. What a shame!

Yes. I have a whole set of videos filmed from the checkerboard on YouTube. It was a great vantage point.
