Riccardo was a superb driver and perhaps, very underrated.
I never understood why he was disliked in some circles although James Hunt may have had something to do with this.To this day, I cannot understand why Hunt detested Riccardo so much. Even after video footage of Ronnie Peterson's accident at Monza clearly showed it was Hunt's fault and not Patrese's, perhaps his hatred for Riccardo was driven by guilt?
Hunt wasn't even half the man Patrese is both as a Formula one driver and a person.
Now *there* is a legend, from the days when the field was full of them: Piquet, Mansell, Senna, Prost, Lauda, and so many others. When you looked at F1 grids from 1980-1992, more than half were potential world champions. How far have we sunk that people think Michael Backmarker is the supposed "greatest"?
thanks for posting this. Patrese is a class act and having him in a Honda just seems right. He's probably sold more Type R civics than any ad campaign after that hot lap with his hot wife got out. His ability to relate to the public has always been evident but after 15 years, Honda and he allow us to be in the pits and on the track with a great crew and a great driver. He DOES get to take that Type R home, right? Ciao.
Always a gentleman, always smiling. And pretty skilled not only at driving but also at setting up the car. Remember that, when first paired at Williams, he was initially fastest than Nigel Mansell. And this is when Riccardo already was 'old'!!
the thing i love about hondas is the fact it puts out alot of power per liter. fuel efficient, cheap, fast in the circuit if ur a good driver, and well... its fun to whoop on v8 when ur boosting :)
What a nice clip! I was a fan of Patrese back then, and i was really pleased to see him so exited. It almost seemed that he was so exited, taht he wanted to start his career all over again.
It was as if he asked him self "why did i leave this sport"
patrese executed two of the great passes in his time.
1991 german grand prix: in one lap and two consecutive corners, prost on the outside followed by senna on the inside. (... just try to imagine that!!!!!)
no one, regardless of equipment or circumstance can or will ever claim that in their career.
unfortunately, it's the one part (6/11) that's conveniently missing in the 11 part 1991 german grand prix series that is uploaded on here.
My first motorsport memory is of Riccardo winning the 1983 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. He was always a fast driver, a loyal team member and a great man.
I really enjoyed watching this video, thanks for posting :-)
Riccardo is pure class. A true sportsman, a loyal team member and very underrated in his time. He finished 3rd in the 1989 F1 championship only to Prost and Senna in an inferior Williams.
Why is english so difficult for italians ? ;o) cheers

off topic: omg these cars were SOOO better looking than todays cars. wider and lower rear wing, narrower front. they just look like they should be.
