  • yeah thats Billy

  • is that Billy Kilson on drums????

  • funking grooving gorgeous:-)

  • wow!!! Ive never been into smooth jazz and even though 3/4 of the horns are usually on the smooth jazz scene this is SOMETHING ELSE!! its like what smooth jazz should be lol, love it. really loved it.

  • What is the vamp? Like what are the chords?

  • Fm7 | Cm7 | Ab | Db | something like that

  • Huh? You sure? That doesn't sound right at all when I go to piano. . .

  • half step down, excuse me

  • A** kickin smooth jazz funk. The tune was originally composed by Ronnie Laws. It's a smooth jazz classic and this live version is one of the best with the most popular horn players and best rhythm section in the biz. Oh yeah...

  • Yo who wrote dis song

  • WOW all of those dudes are super jazz stars. all star line up

  • Seeing all those stars perfoming live is great and very interesting! L♥ve it :D

  • I had this DVD and lent it out and never saw it again, could not find it anywhere in the shops, man that was years ago, man thanks for posting it , I'm loving it OOhh Yeah

  • wasn't this a Ronnie Laws tune originally? This version is tre sweeeeeeet!

  • Yeahhh you're right ! I've been trying to understand this phrase for more than 2 year ! And I don't understand what's up wit it lol ! It's very simple but, it gave me goosebumps... I guess it's Kenny's style :). Love this man. Kirk Whalum was mad too ! Boney James did his thing, but he's not my cup of tea too much... Just a matter of opinion.

  • lovin that crash choke at 1:55 man.. lovin it.

  • The real Kenny G kicked booty!

  • LUUUUURRRRRVVVE this number.....

    Great bass line....

  • this is more like acid jazz than smooth jazz, as the song is orignaly from incognito, boney james does it the most for me tho his style is so cool and i play tenor, but all three are great sax players

  • You sure, i thought it was from james taylor quartet

  • All so talented! I've seen Boney, Kirk & Rick B. live and they are all GREAT.

This site is to express to our Artist for the fine job they do. They feed our hearts and soul and that means alot to me.

I love music and songs with vocal lyrics I would always listen to although, STILL I would fasinate myself with the background instruments and to me niether is better than the other. what a privilege @ honor to see them live. When I buy a new CD I always get

hyper coz I can't wait to hear it

  • wow! smooth jazz is the shit today!

  • when you talk about sax these are the best there is period. you could'nt get it any better than this

  • i don't know where they got all of them in one furnace, thats alot of hit for one show. pls pls pls does anyone knows where i can find the DVD or something? i would really appreciate it thanks.

  • For the best verison of this song youtube

Side Affect "Always There" (made in 1977)

The female that sang with the group is Helen Lowe. She married the former road manager for Heatwave James Baylor and now she is known in the Gospel music arena as Helen Baylor. She has had a very successful Gospel music career, but before she became a Christian and started singing for God, she sang background for Rufus feat. Chaka. Go to side effects "always there" for the real vocal verison

  • Who's better? Kirk Whalum or Boney James?

  • Both have a totally different approach and distinct tone, but i love them both though, but there is something about kirk's licks it's more percussive

  • KIRK WHALUM

  • I like Kirk better but just my opinion. Kirk has more of the traditional jazz vocabulary under his belt. Therefore, his licks are more rhythmically and harmonically complex and I like that.

Boney's licks are more limited to pop and smooth jazz. That doesn't mean he's not and excellent player. Just a different approach.

  • Kirk Whalum

  • They all was AWESOME to me !

  • I love this!!!! Kenny definately shows his MILES influence. Too bad Rick didn't get a chance to display his talents on this song. He is one of the best jazz trumpet players alive today!!!!

  • supertight rhythm section

  • I agree!!!

  • I loved this performance but must say my man Billy Kilson should have gotten more face time. He was killing it on drums.

    Reggie

  • I agree. I'm a college professor that's over the ONLY gospel program in the country, BUT I came through the jazz and marching programs. each one gave me a little something to add to the other.

  • Compared to Kieth, Kirk, Boney james' playing style is just too smooth jazz-like. yea, the song itself is pretty modern funk stuff, but too simple blues stuff he used for the improb. Kieth was hitting some diminish chords as well as pentatonic. Kirk showcased tons of different styles: diminish, blues, dorian, and etc. Personally liked Kirk's solo the best.

  • kirk whalum circuler breathing. lol

    that's pretty sick

  • Brilliant!

  • I'm Sooo happy to see Kenny's perfomance before.

  • this is bad ass!!!

  • nice Nice NIce NICe NICE NIIICE!!!!!!!!!

  • and... exactly how is this gay in any way?

  • Really sorry, some asshole keeps going on ym account.

  • I wish I was at that concert. Those guys were jammin'!!!

  • cheesy beyond belief but i haven't heard a groove this good for AGES, just amazing!!!!!! Can't believe how amazing it sounds.

  • Stumbled onto this..... but this is one of my favorite tunes, nice extended jam.....

  • also, does anyone know if you can buy a CD with this on because i really want to put it on my iPod! and i agree with DeejayLarz2006, but i'm only 13 LOL!

  • Casino Lights 2 CDs----Great CD Not with me or I'd give more info. Daz

  • thanks! x

  • i love this so much! and they all look like they're having a really good time too! i don't even notice that 10 minutes has gone by when i watch them lol!

  • Ilove this piece, but every time I watch it I crack up watching Mike Manson on bass. I reckon he must have good therapist for his neck, the way it keep doin the chicken thing :)

  • Boney gets you going eh? Sexually? You want to hunt him down. Give him one? Music can have that effect. This is clearly more than music for you. You need analysis my friend.

  • great tune. Rick Braun is crackin me up with that silly undershirt

  • These guys are the coolest cats in town. Bar None!! - playing their hearts and souls on their sleeves. Jammin', Groovin', Hammerin'

    Just flat layin' it down......

  • I wish I was there, yesssss!!

  • i just got done reading some of you guys comments, some of you make me sick, your all sitting here bashing these musicians when all theyre doing is playing and having fun, who care what style of music they were brought up playing, if they can manage to put it behind themselves and play together, cant you people give them the courtesy of listening to them without bad mouthing the other soloist. come on now, im only 17 and i can appreciate what theyre doing

  • Amen to that!!

  • does anyone have sheet music for this song or any arrangement of this song? if so could u help me out, me and some friends really wanna learn how to play this

  • Sure, the name of this tune is Always There and you can find it at The New Real Book

  • That's what I'm talking about. A jam session like no other. Come visit my gospel sax on my page.

  • wow kenny and kirk destroy these guys. i always thought that kirk should try straight ahead as well i think he would sound great. kenny is obviously a staight ahead monster. and then boney james... hm.... :/

  • Kirk does play straight ahead. He's on a cd with Joey DeFrancesco entitled "live at the 5 spot"

  • tmasterg, ElHuapango, et al: For those of you debating the talent, validity, or purity of this music, are you serious??? I see none of your asses on this stage. Just enjoy the music, and if you don't... listen to something else.

  • your sayin it

  • those people who come in and write insults about the beautiful music are just thugs. They aren't even worth paying attention to because they probably say that about all music they listen to on here. Its the same kind of people who see a raw, obviously untouched video and call it fake no matter what. These boneheads who said that about this music obviously lack taste and an ear for great music. They should go back to their rap and heavy metal ...probably have headbanged a little too much lol

  • Very well put. All three of the players have their place in music and guess what none of them sounded anything alike. That's the beauty of it..

  • dude me too. later man.

  • dude, you don't even know how much I love jazz piano, like Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau are like two of my favorite artists.

  • sweet i like to rock the selmers.

  • dude what kind of horn do you play, we should jam sometime.

  • nah i am good later brother, you have a great day. and remember its all good we weren't fighting i think you are a cool dude....not

  • Just calm down man. You gotta learn to deal with people in this world. Don't get all huffy and puffy about it. But it's true. Kenny IS a better saxplayer/musician. Maybe boney is a better composer or arranger or whatever but overall tmasterg is right. He attacked no one. And the fact is that the way you've worded everything and your high school comebacks really makes you look like a little bitch.

  • you want the notes...okay...b c# f# e g f# e f# g f# e c# b c# g#f# e f# e f# e f# g# b c# e f# g# f# e b c# c# b g# c# b f# e f# e c# b c#...thats the first little part i guess you could try a simple rhythmic dictation and figure out the rhythms i dunno what you want. lol. lets remember you got your self into this by me saying.. kenny has more talent thats it. your a joke

  • ElHuapango man grow up. Tmasterg's just giving his opinion. He attacked no one. He just stated a fact. Then you jumped all over him and bitched him out for saying they "sold out". He's not talking about WHAT there playing(i.e. smooth jazz), he's talking about HOW there playing. If Redman, Potter, Coltrane, or in this case Garrett played over this style, yes they would play less "complicated", but not hoaky. Not lame licks with a thin laser tone.

  • but then again.... giving up the love of my life for money... that would make me a sellout :)

  • wow, you're both a bunch of cocks. I will say this though. Smooth jazz musicians I don't think are sell outs - I think they are smart. The reason most people don't listen to stuff like trane or cannonball is because they cant understand what is happening. Smooth jazz is less complicated, so it has a bigger fanbase, and the potential to earn more money. IF i was a smart man, i would be doing something besides my passion, i would get a real job instead of playing sax. like being a doctor.

  • you crack me up dude, i didn't even say such a thing. get your facts straight nurse man.

  • wow you should teach jazz history at my university. You are ever so wise.

  • I just wanted to see who would cuss first see ya later fuck bag.

  • wow you are a very modest musician, people love that. You are the one putting me down man. BTW this is very mature of you to start attacking people on youtube. You can't shed you are a sell out that probably never gets any gigs, and if you do get gigs I am not interested in your smooth jazz, sell out music that you play. why would I waste my precious time transcribing kirk whalum while I could transcribe a good saxophone player like kenny garrett.

  • YAY you tube Fight FTW!

  • dude I am talking cross over from straight ahead real jazz to smooth jazz. If you are ever so wise about everything music, why are you a medical student. If all you want in life is money, then music is not for you. If you were a true musician you wouldn't care about the money.

  • dude, you are the kind of person that this music is directed to, the ignorant.stop spitting random stuff out like you know what your talking about. i bet you don't even play an instrument. go bury yourself.

  • Just to back up what tmasterg said, Kenny isn't the only successful jazz musician playing in the group. Billy Kilson and George Duke are other jazz greats that have made their way fine without playing crossover music. They're probably doing this gig because they got asked to because they're awesome at what they do.

  • besides maybe you should concentrate on saving peoples lives mr. doctor.

  • dude you have no idea what your talking about. Kenny Garrett gets plenty of gigs, and makes a fine living I am sure. I don't need you one here telling me what I already know. I am sorry I didn't mean to insult your "profession" I am working on my degree in music and I know what it is like. Calm down and stop being weird.

  • does anyone know who composed this song?

  • William Jeffrey and Ronnie Laws

  • I like how kenny had more talent than all these guys put together when he was like 12. Kenny why are you playing with these smooth guys...?

  • Nothing wrong with Kenny steppin outside the box a little

  • I think so too, like it's the exact footage and boney james plays the exact same lick and you see th exact same footage for the melody at one point in the beginning of the video and the end...and i've watched this video so many times i'm 99% sure it's that..they probably edited the video wrong or something :S

  • You can also see the position of Boney James. After the repeated part he stands and another position all for sudden... it's very rare

  • I think it's you ;-)

  • what a great groove... with the grandmasters of smooth jazz ;)...thanks for the vid

  • Bass and drums are killin! w/o that, wouldn't sound half as good.

  • I had no-o Ideal kenny garret was as thunderous as that solo he rumbled off.man!

  • I think he (KW) playing on his Dukoff as he used to play one

He's got that edgy kind of sound he hasn't got now.

    He now sounds more smooth.

I've come accross plenty of people who use Dukoff for tenor and work really well.I think they are too edgy for alto but man,....kenny garret is damm edgy as well

    Wicked solos

  • watch?v=T9r4wK4FBiM

  • other than the comparison the jazz band sounds great.

  • I wish my jazz band played this song this well.. OMg.. we sound horrible compared to this.

  • means the whole name, sorry

  • can somebody tell me the hole name of Kirks sax?

    Sounds awsome

  • Keilwerth SX90R Black nickel plated. But, its not the horn. he sounds just about the same on everything, just like everyone else does. the horn doesn't make the sound, the person does.

  • what kind of lick was that by kirk at 6:52? I loved the tension in it.

  • THAT WAS SUCH A SICK LICK!!!!

  • the one at 6:50 ish when he begins his solo

  • Good gosh!!!!!!!!!!:)

  • can somebody please transcribe either Kenny or Kirk's solo...seriously.

  • why don't you transcribe it?!?!? :)

it's good pratice for your ear.

  • damn, way to get me in the mood for a jam session...

  • All of the solos were characteristic of who they are and where they come from. Smokin'.As for the key of the song, it was not the oringinal key, but I can do it there too, lol. Check out Ronnie Laws other version of this song call "Still always there" on the Harvest for the world cd. It's poppin!!

  • Some of us got it and some of us didn't. Kirk killed! He kinda put me in the mindset of how Brecker may have approached his solo, inside and outside of the funk. Garret's tone was that of a tenor sax and he kept it real to his roots an R&B and Funky jazz feel. Boney did Boney and he has his place in the smooth jazz genre and if you listened close enough, he almost strayed away from that pen thang but went back to his comfort zone.

  • It is a totaly crazy,amazing.

  • YES, YES, YES !! Bring on more ....simply love it

  • If you want to hear another wonderful sax player, put this into the search box:

    "Bársony Bálint legjobb pillanatai"

He is a hungarian sax player, truly amazing!

  • who is playing the bass

    sounds pretty good

    it's manson from CHICAGO?

  • Great clip and good quality. Thank you for this one. I have to add this one to my jazz blog!

  • Oh my good this is good!

never heard casino lights before but now I'm gonna check them out on itunes.

  • dis gotta be da best calaboration eva

  • they're all mad man, great music

  • any know the chords?

    those chords are just SICK!

  • this version's in Em i think, i don't have my guitar with me. But the main changes whatever key you're in will be a variation of the Fm7-Cm7-AbM7-DbM7 thing.

  • thanks man.

  • Now thís is what music is all about!!

  • This is the real shit!

  • zckrs

  • i love that shit

  • If only the million dollar divas loved what they do as much as these guys do... different styles, same song... all about the music

  • Sometimes is doesn't seem fair, realizing that these guys aren't nearly as well-known as some popstars who seem to have way less soul in their music, does it? But hey, they've got a fan in me.

  • amen to that man

  • KENNY GARRETT THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

  • lindo lindo lindo !! jaja.. mffffff

  • this is REAL smooth jazz

  • absolutely AWESOME !!!!!!!!

  • Cats gone hog wild!!!

  • Yes that is Kenny Garrett. I saw him perform Sept 2007 in Washington, DC. GREAT SHOW!

  • Man, you wanna check out a bad-ass version of this song even badder than this and Ronnies - check out Dave Ellis' version. Kat named Troy Lampkins on Bass, man-o sick solo, real sick!!

  • I love this music always there!very good beat for to dance!

  • see, this is how the funk/R&b jazz should be...when the guys who live and breathe bebop come out and do this kind of thing, it is the greatest!!!!!

  • Man, that's how life should be every single day! GREAT feeling! GREAT energy! GREAT sounds! Thanx

  • in your eyes

  • Shitty? Thats Jeff Lorbers song mate. bloody tool.

  • Oh, and you've done so well that instead of playing music you're posting on this site... f'ing loser! This was a classic from the seventies from Ronnie Laws and Pressure. This may not be technically the best, but it's amazing musicians paying tribute to an amazing song. Get off your high horse punk... you don't belong ther anyway.

  • word

  • "Shitty music" huh!?.... & this comin' from a person who's appropriately named "perov-ass"!!

  • This is jammin" I wish I would have been there to see this.

  • I WANT THE MP3.

    :(

  • one of the best songs ive ever heard

  • Larry David on guitar...

  • Larry Carlton

  • I know he looks just like Larry David

  • nah, he looks like larry carlton

  • thank u for posting this song! u made my Friday night!:))

  • LOL different strokes. I thought he was killing.

  • Drummer....Masterfull!!!!

  • keny garret garret is amazing dang. But I love the way Boney James started his solo.

  • Kirk's playin inside the chord - definitelly outstanding

  • This is 1 ferocious cover of the orig '76 classic by jazz saxist Ronnie Laws! Where Ronnie's perf is soulful, Kirk and Co transforms this joint into a funk-flowin','5-STAR,fun-fest every-1 havin'a ball! *SideNote*-R.Laws classic "Always There" has been covered & recorded over 20 times with noteworthy efforts being "Side Effects" voc-version(a club classic), Willie Bobo's latin version & R/B band "Incognito". I even recorded my own version due to the mad-luv I have for this song!

  • u think that u can help me with the notes?

  • New Real Book (Sher) Volume 1

  • I personally thought kirk had a great solo; playing changes at the right time. While playing smooth jazz voice, he also managed to play classic lines including diminish scales. Kenny is just so hip. He can jam all night long blowing everyone away. He had the best flow overall. Boney had a great sound but it is just so cheesy to me. His lines are too repetitive.

  • kenny and kirk had the best solos but overall one of the best songs ive ever heard
