wow!!! Ive never been into smooth jazz and even though 3/4 of the horns are usually on the smooth jazz scene this is SOMETHING ELSE!! its like what smooth jazz should be lol, love it. really loved it.
A** kickin smooth jazz funk. The tune was originally composed by Ronnie Laws. It's a smooth jazz classic and this live version is one of the best with the most popular horn players and best rhythm section in the biz. Oh yeah...
I had this DVD and lent it out and never saw it again, could not find it anywhere in the shops, man that was years ago, man thanks for posting it , I'm loving it OOhh Yeah
Yeahhh you're right ! I've been trying to understand this phrase for more than 2 year ! And I don't understand what's up wit it lol ! It's very simple but, it gave me goosebumps... I guess it's Kenny's style :). Love this man. Kirk Whalum was mad too ! Boney James did his thing, but he's not my cup of tea too much... Just a matter of opinion.
this is more like acid jazz than smooth jazz, as the song is orignaly from incognito, boney james does it the most for me tho his style is so cool and i play tenor, but all three are great sax players
All so talented! I've seen Boney, Kirk & Rick B. live and they are all GREAT.
This site is to express to our Artist for the fine job they do. They feed our hearts and soul and that means alot to me.
I love music and songs with vocal lyrics I would always listen to although, STILL I would fasinate myself with the background instruments and to me niether is better than the other. what a privilege @ honor to see them live. When I buy a new CD I always get
i don't know where they got all of them in one furnace, thats alot of hit for one show. pls pls pls does anyone knows where i can find the DVD or something? i would really appreciate it thanks.
The female that sang with the group is Helen Lowe. She married the former road manager for Heatwave James Baylor and now she is known in the Gospel music arena as Helen Baylor. She has had a very successful Gospel music career, but before she became a Christian and started singing for God, she sang background for Rufus feat. Chaka. Go to side effects "always there" for the real vocal verison
I like Kirk better but just my opinion. Kirk has more of the traditional jazz vocabulary under his belt. Therefore, his licks are more rhythmically and harmonically complex and I like that.
Boney's licks are more limited to pop and smooth jazz. That doesn't mean he's not and excellent player. Just a different approach.
I love this!!!! Kenny definately shows his MILES influence. Too bad Rick didn't get a chance to display his talents on this song. He is one of the best jazz trumpet players alive today!!!!
I agree. I'm a college professor that's over the ONLY gospel program in the country, BUT I came through the jazz and marching programs. each one gave me a little something to add to the other.
Compared to Kieth, Kirk, Boney james' playing style is just too smooth jazz-like. yea, the song itself is pretty modern funk stuff, but too simple blues stuff he used for the improb. Kieth was hitting some diminish chords as well as pentatonic. Kirk showcased tons of different styles: diminish, blues, dorian, and etc. Personally liked Kirk's solo the best.
also, does anyone know if you can buy a CD with this on because i really want to put it on my iPod! and i agree with DeejayLarz2006, but i'm only 13 LOL!
i love this so much! and they all look like they're having a really good time too! i don't even notice that 10 minutes has gone by when i watch them lol!
Ilove this piece, but every time I watch it I crack up watching Mike Manson on bass. I reckon he must have good therapist for his neck, the way it keep doin the chicken thing :)
Boney gets you going eh? Sexually? You want to hunt him down. Give him one? Music can have that effect. This is clearly more than music for you. You need analysis my friend.
i just got done reading some of you guys comments, some of you make me sick, your all sitting here bashing these musicians when all theyre doing is playing and having fun, who care what style of music they were brought up playing, if they can manage to put it behind themselves and play together, cant you people give them the courtesy of listening to them without bad mouthing the other soloist. come on now, im only 17 and i can appreciate what theyre doing
does anyone have sheet music for this song or any arrangement of this song? if so could u help me out, me and some friends really wanna learn how to play this
wow kenny and kirk destroy these guys. i always thought that kirk should try straight ahead as well i think he would sound great. kenny is obviously a staight ahead monster. and then boney james... hm.... :/
tmasterg, ElHuapango, et al: For those of you debating the talent, validity, or purity of this music, are you serious??? I see none of your asses on this stage. Just enjoy the music, and if you don't... listen to something else.
those people who come in and write insults about the beautiful music are just thugs. They aren't even worth paying attention to because they probably say that about all music they listen to on here. Its the same kind of people who see a raw, obviously untouched video and call it fake no matter what. These boneheads who said that about this music obviously lack taste and an ear for great music. They should go back to their rap and heavy metal ...probably have headbanged a little too much lol
Just calm down man. You gotta learn to deal with people in this world. Don't get all huffy and puffy about it. But it's true. Kenny IS a better saxplayer/musician. Maybe boney is a better composer or arranger or whatever but overall tmasterg is right. He attacked no one. And the fact is that the way you've worded everything and your high school comebacks really makes you look like a little bitch.
you want the notes...okay...b c# f# e g f# e f# g f# e c# b c# g#f# e f# e f# e f# g# b c# e f# g# f# e b c# c# b g# c# b f# e f# e c# b c#...thats the first little part i guess you could try a simple rhythmic dictation and figure out the rhythms i dunno what you want. lol. lets remember you got your self into this by me saying.. kenny has more talent thats it. your a joke
ElHuapango man grow up. Tmasterg's just giving his opinion. He attacked no one. He just stated a fact. Then you jumped all over him and bitched him out for saying they "sold out". He's not talking about WHAT there playing(i.e. smooth jazz), he's talking about HOW there playing. If Redman, Potter, Coltrane, or in this case Garrett played over this style, yes they would play less "complicated", but not hoaky. Not lame licks with a thin laser tone.
wow, you're both a bunch of cocks. I will say this though. Smooth jazz musicians I don't think are sell outs - I think they are smart. The reason most people don't listen to stuff like trane or cannonball is because they cant understand what is happening. Smooth jazz is less complicated, so it has a bigger fanbase, and the potential to earn more money. IF i was a smart man, i would be doing something besides my passion, i would get a real job instead of playing sax. like being a doctor.
wow you are a very modest musician, people love that. You are the one putting me down man. BTW this is very mature of you to start attacking people on youtube. You can't shed you are a sell out that probably never gets any gigs, and if you do get gigs I am not interested in your smooth jazz, sell out music that you play. why would I waste my precious time transcribing kirk whalum while I could transcribe a good saxophone player like kenny garrett.
dude I am talking cross over from straight ahead real jazz to smooth jazz. If you are ever so wise about everything music, why are you a medical student. If all you want in life is money, then music is not for you. If you were a true musician you wouldn't care about the money.
dude, you are the kind of person that this music is directed to, the ignorant.stop spitting random stuff out like you know what your talking about. i bet you don't even play an instrument. go bury yourself.
Just to back up what tmasterg said, Kenny isn't the only successful jazz musician playing in the group. Billy Kilson and George Duke are other jazz greats that have made their way fine without playing crossover music. They're probably doing this gig because they got asked to because they're awesome at what they do.
dude you have no idea what your talking about. Kenny Garrett gets plenty of gigs, and makes a fine living I am sure. I don't need you one here telling me what I already know. I am sorry I didn't mean to insult your "profession" I am working on my degree in music and I know what it is like. Calm down and stop being weird.
I think so too, like it's the exact footage and boney james plays the exact same lick and you see th exact same footage for the melody at one point in the beginning of the video and the end...and i've watched this video so many times i'm 99% sure it's that..they probably edited the video wrong or something :S
I think he (KW) playing on his Dukoff as he used to play one
He's got that edgy kind of sound he hasn't got now.
He now sounds more smooth.
I've come accross plenty of people who use Dukoff for tenor and work really well.I think they are too edgy for alto but man,....kenny garret is damm edgy as well
Keilwerth SX90R Black nickel plated. But, its not the horn. he sounds just about the same on everything, just like everyone else does. the horn doesn't make the sound, the person does.
All of the solos were characteristic of who they are and where they come from. Smokin'.As for the key of the song, it was not the oringinal key, but I can do it there too, lol. Check out Ronnie Laws other version of this song call "Still always there" on the Harvest for the world cd. It's poppin!!
Some of us got it and some of us didn't. Kirk killed! He kinda put me in the mindset of how Brecker may have approached his solo, inside and outside of the funk. Garret's tone was that of a tenor sax and he kept it real to his roots an R&B and Funky jazz feel. Boney did Boney and he has his place in the smooth jazz genre and if you listened close enough, he almost strayed away from that pen thang but went back to his comfort zone.
this version's in Em i think, i don't have my guitar with me. But the main changes whatever key you're in will be a variation of the Fm7-Cm7-AbM7-DbM7 thing.
Sometimes is doesn't seem fair, realizing that these guys aren't nearly as well-known as some popstars who seem to have way less soul in their music, does it? But hey, they've got a fan in me.
Man, you wanna check out a bad-ass version of this song even badder than this and Ronnies - check out Dave Ellis' version. Kat named Troy Lampkins on Bass, man-o sick solo, real sick!!
ALWAYS THERE ON YOUTUBE MADE IN 1975. ALSO A GROUP call Side Effects did it.Both are better than this. but this verison is rocking too.Somebody post Side Affect recording Let the world know true story
what the hell is this and why the hell has it been missing from my ipod i love this is this a one off thing of is it a kind of fourplay? we need more bands like this
Oh, and you've done so well that instead of playing music you're posting on this site... f'ing loser! This was a classic from the seventies from Ronnie Laws and Pressure. This may not be technically the best, but it's amazing musicians paying tribute to an amazing song. Get off your high horse punk... you don't belong ther anyway.
This is 1 ferocious cover of the orig '76 classic by jazz saxist Ronnie Laws! Where Ronnie's perf is soulful, Kirk and Co transforms this joint into a funk-flowin','5-STAR,fun-fest every-1 havin'a ball! *SideNote*-R.Laws classic "Always There" has been covered & recorded over 20 times with noteworthy efforts being "Side Effects" voc-version(a club classic), Willie Bobo's latin version & R/B band "Incognito". I even recorded my own version due to the mad-luv I have for this song!
I personally thought kirk had a great solo; playing changes at the right time. While playing smooth jazz voice, he also managed to play classic lines including diminish scales. Kenny is just so hip. He can jam all night long blowing everyone away. He had the best flow overall. Boney had a great sound but it is just so cheesy to me. His lines are too repetitive.

Boney did Boney and he has his place in the smooth jazz genre and if you listened close enough, he almost strayed away from that pen thang but went back to his comfort zone.

If only the million dollar divas loved what they do as much as these guys do... different styles, same song... all about the music

Sometimes is doesn't seem fair, realizing that these guys aren't nearly as well-known as some popstars who seem to have way less soul in their music, does it? But hey, they've got a fan in me.
