A shame they just drew random squiggly lines. You can get much better sounds (i.e. actual music) if you know what you're doing and most importantly if the things you draw have a meaningful relationship between each other (e.g. drawing lines that are vertically separated by distances that make them have a harmonic relationship). Disclaimer: I'm the developer of Photosounder, a program that basically does what the ANS synth did and more (it opens sounds as images too).
This synth was made in the 1930's, and of course the commissars called it an example of Soviet superiority. Look at that panel. it looks like it's made with surplus aircraft control parts. There is only one of these. Amazing. It looks like they have it in St. Basil's cathedral, which has been a museum since the revolution. I think, though, they may have opened it up as a church again, now that they are democratic.

This is really cool. I'm guess the images sort of create the sound (I don't know any Russian, wondering if I could get a English translation, or at least summary)
Exactly. The black glass plate is like a spectrogram. You "paint" the "spectrum" on it and then it's analyzed by photodiodes or suchlike. 720 sine wave generators produce a sound whenever the appropriate portion on the glass plate is transparent. An amazing instrument.
How Dr. Who of you!

You should definitely check these programs:
-Coagula
-Sound 2D Warper
-AudioPaint
These work based on the same principle, interpreting digital images as sound data.
