  • haha kutcher is finding it hard to enjoy the attention mayer receives. Its alway better to be the guy with the guitar.

  • magic starts at 2:25

  • Comment removed

  • His tone is incredible.

  • he's got some killer licks

  • Was that EC's Old Love @1:55 ?

  • who was the guess never u mind who care ...JOHN MAYER IS ON THE SHOW WHAT A TREAT david letterman could have done with out the guess it should have been a long jam session 2 MILLIONS THUMBS UP ON THAT ONE IF IT WOULD HAVE HAPPEN.. ANYWAY JOHN MAYER IS ON THE SHOW THUMBS UP ON THAT

  • He looks like he couldn't care to be there. All bored and what not

  • This is really cool!

  • 1:56 this is right when heavier things came out.. and yet he plays a riff very similar to i don't trust myself (with loving you), which came out three years later.

    foreshadowing i guess.

  • @Cheftee it's actually a song called "Old Love" by Eric Clapton which he's covering. You're right though, it's a very similar feel.

Listen to Mayer's cover of it on youtube, insane stuff.

  • @MrBearmanification ah, hence the old love he sings when they come back from commercial. nice. thank you for the most insightful reply i've ever gotten on youtube. (seriously) I'm going to watch that other video now, much appreciated.

  • John is a true blues man....grew up idolizing SRV

  • What's the name of the song at 2:26??? Damn i can't remember it!!! anyone knows it??

  • @TomLouBlues No Such Thing

  • @TomLouBlues The Ghetto by Donny Hathaway. Massive TUUUUUNE!

  • @MrBearmanification thanks man!!!! ;)

  • david letterman is so unenthusiastic about every musical performance on the show

  • @g3rbl but then again, david isn't good at showing enthusiasm for anything on the show

  • There he is ... BALL SHAVER !!

  • he was playing for real that night.

  • they should have some way to see all the music that goes on during the commercials for these shows lol

  • how bout that

  • Letterman - "THERE HE IS, IT'S BALL SHAVER, EVERYBODY!!"

  • His guitar changes color

  • At 2:30, how does he get those wicked sounding bends?

  • @guitarguy123212 he hits two strings all at once and bends them. That's how I'd describe it. Generally it's his fingers and a lot of practice that produce this amazing sound .

  • @huzza18 okay, kinda like when you mute a string in front of the one you're gonna bend and then hit both I assume? Or does he let both ring. who knows, it's freakin john mayer :P Thanks!

  • @guitarguy123212 let them both ring and bend them all together. When you bend bend the high e-string, try to catch the b-string on your way up. That produces that sound. You just had to watch SRV play . He did that same thing a lot.

  • who cares ashton kutcher sitting there when John Mayer is in the house!

  • So I wonder if the band learned his songs prior to the show because if they improved "no such things" they are crazy! Not the songs hard but the chord changes are wierd!

  • He reserves the right to be an uber-douche, when ur that talented in every aspect of life then why would u give a shit about anything

  • Have you ever noticed just how much Paul Shaffer resembles the Butterball Cenobite from the "Hellraiser" movies???

  • He's just so fucking good.

  • which song is it? 2.35

  • @fedegianga91 Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto (Part 1)

  • Comment removed

  • o careca é tipo o Bira do programa do Jô né? haha

  • he looks like he´s worried one of his ex girlfriends are coming on the show

  • WHERE'S BONES MALONE

  • ITS THE BLACK ONE. From way back in the day!

  • "the kid can play..."

  • Hes loaded haha

  • Ashton's probably pissed that the show is all about John xD

  • How bout that...WE GET IT DAVE.

  • @bigwaffle678 its called "no such thing"

  • Rocking a little Donnie Hathaway - awesome!

  • @bigwaffle678 Its probably the most popular song he ever wrote. I'm confident you'll figure it out.

  • John Mayer, along with the great Hendrix(RIP) and the almighty Clapton made me love the Stratocaster

  • The late show would be so much better if Letterman didn't even talk. Let the band play!

  • @bigwaffle678 "No Such Thing"

  • they did "Old Love"? wish I could see the whole thing.

  • his riffing on "the ghetto" is AMAZING. SCORCHING blues licks. mmmmmm saw him at the george in WA with his trio. fuckin amazing

  • thumbs up for 2:29 the left guitarist being late :D

  • @GeorgianPranks yea he was late a second time too. Seemed like he was distracted by what was coming out of John Mayer's amp.

  • i dont know how many times i've watched this. amazing tone. amazing phrasing.

  • best guitarist EVER

  • He looks like a loser here. No offence.

  • @AnonymousWhitePerson And that makes you a...?

  • @dauwg99,

You are an effete drunkard. Really, it pains me to see good Cognac squandered on such a filthy drunkard. Spare me the pleasantries of gutter-life.

  • @AnonymousWhitePerson hahaha wow you're embarassing yourself - i do not have to say anything

  • I would of killed to be in the audience to watch this

  • paul is full of energy!!

  • i dont care what people say about john mayer or how much of an asshole he is or whatever. i love him and his music. no ones going to warp my idea of him. hes golden :)

  • The only late night band that can touch Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra is the Roots (on LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON).

  • Is that Anton Fig on drums!!

  • OMG IMPROVIZATION AT IT'S BEST

  • Ball Shaver has pretty shit banter.

  • at 1:11 John Mayer just looks confused ..

  • The three douchebags

  • TONE!!!

  • IM COMMENT 421!

  • His sound is very similar to SRV

  • @93pietro93guitar honstly, no its not. Its very very jazzy something new. honestly go listen to srv. now...go!!!

  • @ragingstorm33 It wasn't criticism.. I only want to highlight how John worked on his sound taking inspiration by SRV

  • @ragingstorm33 (I accidently pressed Thumbs Up, Not that I don't agree with you, I just don't agree with you completely hah) Anyway, you are right that his sound is jazzy, ESPECIALLY his acoustic stuff or what some would say his pop tunes. If you (I dont mean you literally) look at his older acoustic work, YBIAWL/Daughters aside, a lot of the chords and progressions are based in jazz; they're much more complicated than people think and he only gets credit from musicians people who try and learn.

  • @surfer1211 totally, his chord choices are crazy and awesome! :P

  • @ragingstorm33 As for Blues/Strat work, he very much sounds like SRV, especially in recent years. Ive seen JM twice and Im seeing him a 3rd at the end of April. He played Voodoo Child last year in August, and it was very much SRV inspired as far as licks and tone go. "go listen to /watch?v=Pphe3SPtyUQ. now...go!!!" Haha I'm only poking fun, but seriously, here is footage from that concert, I think you'll agree with me, if not, I respect your opinion completely! If the link fails its by Zigabid

  • John Mayer is one of the few NEW people with real talent. I just wish he wouldn't "share" so much private life stuff with us.....stick to the music, Johnny!

  • i wish the lick at 2:24 was tabbed

  • What amps he using here? Doesn't sound like the two rock? Fender?

  • ... a wonderful musical talen with us: John The Mayer... @ 0:41

  • @sejtur not a big deal.. he just annunciated the "n" in John. there was no "the"

  • @bjhMus1C it isn't a big deal to me neither but just thought it was funny as to me it sounds like he did pronounce "the". Got a nice laugh out of it.. =p

  • @sejtur nope, there was no "the".. it sounded funny though

  • i just want to listen to him jam forever

  • ashton kutcher oh however you spell his is probably like, whats that annoying thing in my ear... oh thats just 7 time grammy winner john mayer aka the best guitarist of my generation

  • anyone know what song they start to play at 3:08?

  • What the fuck? why is the tele sitting there doing diddly

  • Ashton reminds me of Johns annoying close in age younger brother hahah....I dont know why....

  • The Ghetto is a great song to jam along with. I recommend it highly for any guitar player. I've playing slide along with it and enjoy it every time.

  • @v8chevy350 who originally wrote that song? it sounds real cool i'd like to find it so i can jam to it!

  • Ashton Kutcher > 2:10 VS john mayer > 2:14 to 2:16

  • THERE HE IS - BALL SHAVER!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the ghetto!! I'm talking 'bout the ghetto!

  • @blusismylife love his solo's in that part, do you know who does that song?

  • @wagstaff11 I only know two versions: the original by Donny Hathaway and the jazz version by George Benson (john mayer play this version at the video)... Love it... Hugs from BraziL!!

  • @blusismylife Thanks! I checked out the Donny Hathaway version... Awesome Jam.

I'll check out the other one!87

  • What I love about this is that, I'm sure, he just was invited to play with them and basically went in almost cold having no idea what they were gonna play, and came out playing amazing like at a concert

  • old love at 1:57!!

  • I dont get how anyone can agrue that he isnt good. You gotta give him props. He's got talent.

  • What is the song played at 3:06? Or if it's just a jam, what is the progression?

  • @wiirulez89 It´s just a standard blues ;)

  • Dave should let Paul and a guest artist play once and a while a whole song so we in TV land can enjoy.

  • He's got a great guitar tone. Man, I wish I had that!

  • whats the song name 1:12~?

  • What is the name of the tune at 2:18?

  • The Ghetto! love his soloing in that one..

  • what a humble guy he is

  • funny how they got ashton kutcher there and a bigger celebrity in the band

  • Dave it looks like a pear!

  • I sure would like to get a peak at his collection. Well over 200? Don't really know. His artist model has a bigger neck due to the fact as what SJCrjPWNSS pointed out.

  • what year was this?

  • lol i love how this video is edited by just showing him x) and ashton kutcher is ignored

  • @adamlikescereal It's probably because it's a video about 'John Mayer Jamming with Paul Shaffer Band '

  • dos bombones juntos John Mayer y Ashtonnnnnn

  • at 1:17 what is that song?

  • @hailmary7283 no such thing..

  • @hongkongheat thanks.

  • @hailmary7283 It's called "No Such Thing". Thats definitely the song, i believe it was his first major radio hit, i could be wrong about that part though.
