@bonecrime For the DW, the writers/producers said that ships were rushed through production in order to keep up numbers for the war, so they may be incomplete, therefore, lacking shields.
Realistic reason: Explosions in battles are better than endless hours of shield bubbles not bursting. Showing it's more a war zone than a tactical one on one battle like in TNG.
@dc8r17 That's a pretty weak explanation from their side. It's probably more like what you said. And I'd think it'd be a lot of work to add shield FX to all those ships.
@bonecrime Probably something like that. Also around the same time they switched to using CGI for the effects. It's probably much easier (not to mention affordable) to blow up some CGI ships every week than it is to destroy an expensive model.
