Natural water birth is much gentler easier and less painful than typical hospital births with drugs and procedures. The water is all the epidural you need. And perinnial tears are alot less likely to happen because the water softens all the tissues.

Were you in the water for the majority of your labor? Did the water make the contractions easier for you? Can you describe what the difference the water made in your birth?
Yeah I was a bit taken aback by the midwifes aggressive suctioning too! Its not necessary and seemed very rough. If a baby needs a little draining you can just tip them up or you can gently suck the mucous out yourself. The cord could have been left a bit longer too - or at least cut more gently and lovingly.
My baby sister will be coming soon and im hoping mommy will do it this way lol it seems natural and reliable...how cool is it that you can catch your own baby in your OWN home lol i think thats awesome. i would recommned this to anyone pregant because from what ive seen & heard its more pain in the hospital than water birth. i want my mommy to try it :)
im in shock after watching that evil midwife invade that baby, why not just let the baby lie on mum for a bit before invading its body and did it have to be so rough and uncaring, the suction does not need to be done straight away. After a seemingly peaceful water birth it ended not so peacful for the baby, not the best way to come into the world. that midwife should be sacked.

@rthorn23: the midwife was terrible (poked the baby in the eye!) but as soon as the baby's face hits air they breathe even though they are still attached by the cord. You can't put them back under water and think they'll still be fine.
I loved the soundtrack...COngrats to you both. I am expecting my second and am receiving my prenatal care at the ONLY facility in my state that offers them...Homebirths are illegal here. I am soo excited and so is my 3yr old. She enjoys watching with me! Beautiful..The midwife did almost poke the eye though, twice, but beautiful nonetheless

Here in New Zealand we no longer routinely suction babies when they are born because it slows their heart rate down and it's extremely invasive. I hope your next midwife is slower and gentler. :-) Well done!!
I am expecting another bundle of joy in March. I have moved so I am going to a different birthing center so for all the comments that the midwife was to rough hopefully the next one will be more gentle. What a beautiful birth. How do you feel about the way your midwife handled your baby though? She was very rough. Its not necessary to handle a newborn like that. I hope if there is a next time you can find a midwife that is familiar with a child having a peaceful entry into the world.
I 100% agree! She was way too rough! Years down the road when I start a family I want this same natural water birth and a midwife who really cares and isn't in it just for the paycheck.

I am expecting another bundle of joy in March.
