She is being saved!!!!! I had to go back to watch the other video, and its about the S.S. United States. I am glad people watched, and this is happening. Awesome. Military were soluting her. So Great.....
Cool video but the SS United States is not docked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Its resting at Pier 82 in South Philly between the Walt Whitman and Ben Franklin Bridges, a few miles North of the Navy Yard.
i used to see this ship from the walt whitman bridge every day. i even picked up several loads from the pier and got to see it close up. beautiful ship. i hope they van do something with it. it would make such a great addition to the waterfront, maybe similar to what long beach has done with the queen mary.
@mdl80271, true. Imagine a small ferry giving rides to customers from the USS New Jersey in Camden (Built at the Philly naval yard) across the Delaware River to the SS United States on the Philly side? With those two mammoth ships and the other few smaller colonial ships they already have, it would be one of the most impressive Ship/boat museums in the world. So much potential.
What a beautiful ship..I honestly hope it is saved, i feel so sad when i see treasures like this being scrapped...The US has preserved a lot of it's old WW2 battleships, lets hope they save a ship that carries the name of their country.
So moving! We must save this ship from the breakers. She has been mistreated over the years after gaining us the coveted Blue Ribband...the world-wide transatlantic speed record. History must not be destroyed. SAVE OUR SHIP!
It was reported in March 2010 that scrapping bids for the ship are being collected. Norwegian Cruise Lines, in a press release, noted that there are large costs associated with keeping United States afloat in her current state—around $800,000 a year—and that, as the SS United States Conservancy has not been able to tender an offer for the ship, the company was actively seeking a "suitable buyer.
I'm very glad you liked this video. This is one of my favorites that I've uploaded. Not many people I know understand why I have such a fascination over such a legendary ship like this one. Thank you for your comment!:)
@Nonniegirl4Ever I understand your feelings over this ship. I have been on many beautiful cruises, and would feel this way if I ever saw a ship I had been on looked like this. I have been on many cruises, blessed by my dad to take me, and I am only 37. I will always have an appreciation. Beautiful Video. I love this. One of my favorites.
I love the old liners and my favorites have all but been scrapped (The Norway Regal Empress, etc) At the QE2 still exist at least for now and hope we can save the grand SSUS too. I took a tour of her about ten years ago. A real treat to be walking her decks!
Still around and just opened after Restoration fore public Holland America Line legend SS ROTTERDAM. Now berthed in here name sake port of Rotterdam the Netherlands. She opened February 15 2010. See my video reaction.

She is the SS United States, the flagship of our nation, the namesake of our nation, the very image of the greatness of our nation. I will not let her go.
Nice vid for a nice lady. Have a lot of respect for her, she has to be saved and taken care of. but for me SS FRANCE NORWAY was the more beautiful ever.... now she is gone. Please whomever save big U. She is very good too.
She fits the look of the United States.. weathered, neglected and plainly ignored at her current state. Yet still here waiting for THIS (MY) Generation to do something, ANYTHING! this discusts me to see a treasure like none other, where everyone else lost theirs we still have ours, still we do nothing. Why?
How Could they let a beautiful ship go to waste? How come more isn't being done to restore it? What kind of honor is this to a wonderful ship? This Ship was used in the Disney movie Bon Voyage. I am sorry to see this. I had no Idea until I was reading comments on youtube while actually watching Bon Voyage. :-(
What a waste.I'm sure something like the Liberty Bell is much cheaper to restore and maintain than a ship her size. But I think it's possible. The Queen Mary is both bigger and older.Wonder if they've looked into setting her up as a hotel/conference center on the east coast.
This ships needs saving, damn it all. @_@ Independence is out of sight.. Sounds like it didn't go to Alang. I've read Dubai. That would probably be a good sign if it turns out to be true.
The way things are it doesnt look good. Everyday she sits the cost of repair and storage builds. It would be nice to sail her again. But in these days of Balcony laden mega ships it will be hard to get folks to cruise on her. Unless she goes to Hotel and museum status. Good Luck old girl!
Send her to Alang?! And let a piece of History Die?! I will love to see her share the fate as the great Queen Mary as a museum ship or floating hotel.
so would I - but how practical or likely is that? just the expense of prepping her to be a reef would be huge no doubt. tho it is my hope like everyone's here that she be a museum
yeah i read about that a while back. it would be interesting to hear from someone inside the company what their real plans are and how committed they are to them. i don't know, but i imagine the expense of moderninizing such a large old ship for passenger service would be huge - regardless of what the hull integrity is.
l dont believe that she will be ever repaired, many more beautiful ships like Mauretania, Aquitania and Olympic was scraped... l think the same hapened with United states....
One of the main reasons is that that Queen Mary is not 100% American the SS United States is so i believe that if the ss united states were there instead of QM it would pe succesfull. Shes in good shape alls the outside needs is cosmetic work the inside is the hard part because of furnishings.
I believe the ship is headed to the breakers. Though the QE is moored in Long Beach, investors have looked at the QE as a failure financially. Review the history of the QE and you'll see that it has been sold multiple times. The QE's propulsion systems have been removed as well her fresh water plant. To me that seems criminal. I'm unsure of what will happen to the ship, but it's highly unlikely that the SS United States will become the NYC counterpart of the QE. That's my opinion though.
aside from a tax writeoff why the f*** is she just sitting there rusting away...dying a slow ignoble death, she can still be saved and the profits from turning her into a resort or even a museum would be huge...i hope somebbody steps in before its to late as she is a huge piece of american maritime history
I wish someone could get this ship some well deserved attention this is an american built ship we don,t make to many things in this country anymore and that is a shame that is why i wish someone wealthy would do somthing for this ship like what was done for the queen mary.
The only feesable way to make a profit with BIG U is to aquire a 1000ft slip. NYC west side is all but empty execpt for Intrepid. Turn her into a hotel/museam/convention centre Like the Mary in CA. Save millions on bringing her up to traveling code- and not to mention a complete repower. If she's immobile she doesn't have to comply with the laws of seagoing vessels. imagine the value of 990ft of manhatten real estate
It would be pretty cool to see the Intrepid right next to the United States and both can be part of an overall museum. Its a shame though, I really hope that they can save this ship and turn it into a museum.
No, you are reffering to her running mate the S.S. America. Both were from the United States Line. The S.S. United States is the one docked in Philadelphia.
Norweigan Cruise Lines bought her a couple years back, but the one who really owns her is a real estate investor in New Jersey. As for the S.S. United States herself, I like most other ethuasists of the ship do not know of what her fate will be. Some have hope that she will be saved, while others fear she will be scrapped. what a waste ,im british and recently saw the QE2 if you feel half the pride we brits do for the QE2,seeing the United States in this state must cut to the heart! what a shame a total waste.
This video bring a tear to my eye"s .I remember watching her going out from my home town of Hoboken NJ as a young boy !! She should be back in NYC like the QM1 is in Long beach !!
It has been recently reported that the hull of the ship is rusting away. To have her moved to any port would be impossible in my opinion. My biggest fear of all is that she will share the same fate as her sister ship the America. Let's hope that does not happen!:(
Her structural integrity report released by NCL has placed her hull strength at 95%, remarkable for a vessel her age. I've heard the rumors too but those are reserved for those who find it easy to bash NCL. Contrary to the conspiracy mongers the SSUS was sold outright to NCL. This rumor has been repeated for yrs yet nobody can provide an iota of evidence to support it.
The SS United States, is with no doubt, the single most important part of American Maratime history. just the fact that the ship around proves how important she is, when ships like the SS Norway ex SS France lie on a beach waiting to be scrapped (DOWN WITH NCL!!!)
I Think that the US Goverment should put their foot inside the closing door, and step inside to save her for future generations, like me.
even if NCL restores her I have a feeling, she will lose so much history in the process.
I am baffled by the fact that the wealthiest nation on earth can allow it's crowning maritime achievement to rust away. The irony is that the Queen Mary - a British ship - is enjoying her retirement in the USA!
This was excellent Nonniegirl..great job. I love how you compared her past and present. Showing the happy times and now her sad times. Let's hope she might come out and sail again, I for sure would buy a passage to be on her for her first sailing. Splendid job on the video. :-) Mrs. Linarcos
