Cool video but the SS United States is not docked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Its resting at Pier 82 in South Philly between the Walt Whitman and Ben Franklin Bridges, a few miles North of the Navy Yard.

i used to see this ship from the walt whitman bridge every day. i even picked up several loads from the pier and got to see it close up. beautiful ship. i hope they van do something with it. it would make such a great addition to the waterfront, maybe similar to what long beach has done with the queen mary.

Imagine a small ferry giving rides to customers from the USS New Jersey in Camden (Built at the Philly naval yard) across the Delaware River to the SS United States on the Philly side? With those two mammoth ships and the other few smaller colonial ships they already have, it would be one of the most impressive Ship/boat museums in the world. So much potential.

I love the old liners and my favorites have all but been scrapped (The Norway Regal Empress, etc) At the QE2 still exist at least for now and hope we can save the grand SSUS too. I took a tour of her about ten years ago. A real treat to be walking her decks!

The way things are it doesnt look good. Everyday she sits the cost of repair and storage builds. It would be nice to sail her again. But in these days of Balcony laden mega ships it will be hard to get folks to cruise on her. Unless she goes to Hotel and museum status. Good Luck old girl!

yeah i read about that a while back. it would be interesting to hear from someone inside the company what their real plans are and how committed they are to them. i don't know, but i imagine the expense of moderninizing such a large old ship for passenger service would be huge - regardless of what the hull integrity is.

One of the main reasons is that that Queen Mary is not 100% American the SS United States is so i believe that if the ss united states were there instead of QM it would pe succesfull. Shes in good shape alls the outside needs is cosmetic work the inside is the hard part because of furnishings.

I believe the ship is headed to the breakers. Though the QE is moored in Long Beach, investors have looked at the QE as a failure financially. Review the history of the QE and you'll see that it has been sold multiple times. The QE's propulsion systems have been removed as well her fresh water plant. To me that seems criminal. I'm unsure of what will happen to the ship, but it's highly unlikely that the SS United States will become the NYC counterpart of the QE. That's my opinion though.

The only feesable way to make a profit with BIG U is to aquire a 1000ft slip. NYC west side is all but empty execpt for Intrepid. Turn her into a hotel/museam/convention centre Like the Mary in CA. Save millions on bringing her up to traveling code- and not to mention a complete repower. If she's immobile she doesn't have to comply with the laws of seagoing vessels. imagine the value of 990ft of manhatten real estate

Norweigan Cruise Lines bought her a couple years back, but the one who really owns her is a real estate investor in New Jersey. As for the S.S. United States herself, I like most other ethuasists of the ship do not know of what her fate will be. Some have hope that she will be saved, while others fear she will be scrapped. We can only hope....and pray that NCL won't scrap this wonderful ship.

Her structural integrity report released by NCL has placed her hull strength at 95%, remarkable for a vessel her age. I've heard the rumors too but those are reserved for those who find it easy to bash NCL. Contrary to the conspiracy mongers the SSUS was sold outright to NCL. This rumor has been repeated for yrs yet nobody can provide an iota of evidence to support it.

The SS United States, is with no doubt, the single most important part of American Maratime history. just the fact that the ship around proves how important she is, when ships like the SS Norway ex SS France lie on a beach waiting to be scrapped (DOWN WITH NCL!!!)

I Think that the US Goverment should put their foot inside the closing door, and step inside to save her for future generations, like me.

even if NCL restores her I have a feeling, she will lose so much history in the process.
