With wicked....well i adore it but in truth it isnt all that good and incredibly overrated. The book is.......lets leave that one. I feel that the west end is mostly better at musicals. Les mis in london is better than broadway and i prefer glinda in the west end.
I agree with phantom. I mean i get some reasons of liking phantom but i can never understand people wanting christine to love him. Cos hes mentally unstable and creepy in ways. You like him cause you feel sorry for him
Just to let you know Jonathan Larson (the writer of Rent) didn't die of AIDS, I can't remember off the top of my head but I thinl it was a heart attack or something sudden like that x
i agree generally with this list except for number 4 . i'm pretty sure no one waits around for everyone to die in the end, it's an adaptation, not an exact copy, you cant expect everything that happened in r and j to happen in wss. plus, west side story has the combo of leonard bernstein and sondheim, two of the best musisicans.ever. i think les mis should take wss' spot on your list. it's good, but INCREDIBLY overrated. he stole a loaf of bread. and a crazy man is hates him for it.
@theanonymousblogger1 Thanks for the comment! First: I get adaptations are tricky but R&J is a very dark comedy and it's just a pet peeve of mine that people play it straight, thus my irritation with it. When I pretend it isn't an adaptation (which I do frequently) I really do enjoy the musical. I had to cut a lot of my love for ALL these musicals in the final vid.
I've only seen Les Mis once and it ALMOST made this list for that reason as well as a few others, I may have to add a new vid.
BRODWAY OVER ACTS< IT IS WHAT IT IS.Wicked- I agree that Elphaba's story is completely non original, but the writers know that, again it is the way it is presented not the themes that make it diferent. The song popular is complete satire.only 5 yr old think it is true, and some get that it is making fun of the 'need' to be popular, the girl you saw sing it was probably just playing the char. who i suposed to think popularity is everything. they dropped anvals so that stupid people could get it
@MissBwayLover101 That's the thing though, to you and I the satire and obvious homages to previous shows and conventions are brilliant and thought provoking. To people who don't get it, and really I've seen PLENTY of people who don't get it, they take it at face value and worship it as the best thing ever. Really I like a lot of these shows and I fully agree with many of the points you make, I just don't like the people who worship them all as the best thing ever.
@MissBwayLover101 I'd also like to thank you for sharing your opinion in a calm and rational matter. It's nice to know my videos are getting some kind of a response!
The Dark I know Well was a greatly needed song. It furthurs the explination of housholds in this time period, and shows the effect it had to people.THER WAS NO S&M THEMES.that scene was there to show Wedelas miss understanding of relationships between parents and daughters and boys and girls. And "those three" were the MAIN CHARACTERS, if they didnot have a song it would just be a play, not a musical. And fing a musical that deals with "the sex talk", beating, pregancy, suicide, and teen-ism
@MissBwayLover101 The funny thing is (and you probably know this since you know broadway) is that it WAS a play before it was a musical. I feel the musical's book stayed to true to the original play and the songs were added. I like the songs, but when you add songs to a work without really changing much it is bound to feel a little awkward and bulky, which I feel the musical is, slightly.
I would like to reiterate, because this point has gotten lost, I like musicals, and these are just opinions
Spring Awakening- The Plot starts moving the second the play starts, immedeatly you are shown the conflict between mothers and daughters talking about sex during this time period. Everything that was in the muscial was there for a reason. Mama who bore me was nessicary- Wendala dies becuase of the lack of sex education in housholds, that songs sums that problem up. My Junk shows the contrast and similarity between the way guys and girls view sex and "dreaming about people."
@MissBwayLover101 I disagree. There is a lot of exposition and background given to the characters, and I really do enjoy the songs, but it isn't what I'd consider plot. Until the end of "The Dark I know Well" feels a prologue, it sets the ground work for what will happen, but it doesn't move forward until after that point.
While I have nothing to disagree with you on the whipping scene I have some other comments that will have to go in another post.
Phantom of the Opera- NO ONE FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE PHANTOM! People feel for him. They realize the horrific childhood he had. People can read in to his actions as a result of being a circus freak and outcasted for his entire life. Becuase christine is the only one who allows them selves to get close to him is why he acts so possesive and stalker like. Everyone wants Chritine and Rowul(i spelled that wrong) to be together. And i am hopefull that they dont ruin it with a sequal.
@MissBwayLover101 Yes. Yes they do. Maybe you haven't seen people who have, but long before I saw the musical I had people telling me how amazing the phantom was.
We agree on something! Have you read the synopsis for the proposed sequel? It looks truly dreadful. I wish they hadn't made it, but it looks like it's steaming ahead.
Kiss Me Kate- Alot of it was sung straight as satire.
OVER THE TOP IS WHAT BRODWAY IS!
West Side Story- It is classical story, again your using the 'everyone loves it so i hate is excuse' and it is awful that you wanted everyone to die. I dint get why you wanted that.
@MissBwayLover101 The production I saw, I admit my problem critiquing this show is I've only seen one production, did not play the satire right at all. The director didn't know what she was doing, nor has she ever, but that's beside the point.
There's good over the top and bad over the top, and IMO many of these fell on the wrong side.
It had been a long while since I had seen West Side Story. I still couldn't really sympathise with anyone but Tony and Maria. The gangs lost my sympathy
like. like. like! I agree with 9 out of 10. (I personally have a big place in my heart for West Side Story) but the others are so true. Especially The Phantom of the Opera. You said the EXACT same thing I was thinking after I finished watching it, including stuff about Raoul.
ah, NOW I get what you were talking about with RENT. sorry for that one post I first did (I hope you didn't find me trying to mean in the last one, I just felt you didn't get it all =P not that that is a bad thing)
I must say, I was surprised when you put Wicked at number one - did not see that one coming, but I see where you're coming from.
I think the reason that it's so popular is because in spite of its lacking plot, it still manages to make many people feel very strong emotions, and also because the songs are, well. <3<3<3<3

I really do love Wicked. I just want to knock it unconscious and hide it in an undisclosed location for 50 years. ;)
The book is very different than the musical and YMMV if its adaptation decay or distillation.
Trope dropping is what I do, even on a subconscious level.
I know who this is, a fellow troper!

(That said, I haven't read the book.)
Also, I love your trope dropping. :)
(Three guesses as to who this is, btw.)
