  • I was born in '73, Parcel of Rouges (and Under The Salt) were the two primary albums I remember from my parents collection. I now listen to "folk metal", but it is still Steeleye that I think of as my baseline.

  • @atfatw lol 10/10 for use of the word "Limey" lol. the 18th century is on the phone they want their banter back hahahaha. Brilliant.

  • If you have never smelt the heather and watched the sun rise, if you have never experienced love with no dimension... write on...

  • What words, brilliant heartfelt lamentation.

  • Nice....I enjoyed !!!!

    Zulu

  • their only good song

  • @atfatw And you are an idiot. I agree Maddy Prior's work with June Tabor was better than this but Parcel of rogues is a brilliant thematic work. Every track is a work of high art.

  • @zapkvr haha what an idiot you are LIMEY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @atfatw What?

  • Charming singing! The music that can hypnotise. Thanks for great enjoyment!

  • Masterwork !! Phalaïna

  • Not quite so starwoode. Sold out by Scots "treason". Bought by English Gold.

This is quite the most extraordinary version of this song, just magical. That drum beat is perfect.

  • i dont think wales was mentioned because it was about the scottish being sold out by the english . very sad .

  • Needs to be reloaded ... buffering badly. Great song from a great group.

  • Beautiful melody !!!

  • heard this once on local college radio over 25 years ago, rediscovered here on utube ...am welsh descent, but this Burns tale, as sung here resonates to this day

  • Have you seen my goat?

  • Draig Goch forever.

  • @wellhill99 haha while the scots and english talk about their britain or dislike of it....us welsh the true cultural britons are ignored lest we forget :(

  • @Apemanwithcalculator Bollocks...it's about the treachery of all the Britains. Silly Sods never include themselves in serious lamentations, and the fucking Welsh are the sorriest of the lot. Prats to a man.

  • @Migglyman no it isnt, it was written by the scotsman robert burns you silly cunt

  • @Migglyman brits suck big time!

  • im Scottish, i love Wales, i love England , i love Ireland.

  • One of my fave Steeleye songs. Many a good night spent in my early 20;s. Thank you for posting. Maddy has the voice of an angel.

  • Well, at least the Scots got gold... We just got stinking green paper, about to become worthless.

  • As as someone who is welsh on my mother's side and scotish and irish on my father's side this song really speaks to me- i love it :)

  • a real sad shame that that maddy so sucks today she was once a very fine singer and a credit to her ethnic group if britisher 's actually an ethnic group

  • @atfatw Still waiting for you to post your singing atf. I really think that all of the small minded ugly little comments that you leave would be unnecessary if you'd simply show everyone how GREAT you are! ;O)

  • @Grendel650 sure thing weinie. too bad you can't speak english you icky suburban nerd

'atf' your kind really makes me puke as you are soooooooooooo stupid and insignificant. dweeb, nerd,

drip, creep, dope, idiot, weirdo, punk, they all fit you very well sad to say.

  • We were bought and sold for English gold!! serves you right then!! Great band,,

  • @bazmcginnty its about the sacots being bought, after the elite merchants wasted money building a doomed colony in Panama (diseased ridden tropics)

  • @bazmcginnty scots

  • fuck me, can't i even view a steeleye span song on youtube without reading shite about muslims and the state of britain... we're here for the music, take your politics and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. saints preserve us

  • @SteveResin steve you are a fucking gem, i pished myself laughing when I read your comment, lets just tell everyone to fuck off and you and I will turn the jukebox up and listen to some music.

  • @SteveResin this song is loaded about the scots english union...thats the whole point of the song

  • @Apemanwithcalculator Never! I thought it was about fluffy kittens and mittens.

  • @SteveResin sadly not :'( i need some mittens in this house at the mo as heating broken and could use some kittens to fuel the log fire

  • @Apemanwithcalculator Just burn a few Englishmen in the name of Robert Bruce!

  • @SteveResin LOL but many english are our celtic brothers they just dont realise it.......celts genetically like me are always soak in urine so the burning of them is unstably dangerous (well i think other ppl have pissed pants :S )

  • @Apemanwithcalculator lol I like the cut of your gib Apeman :)

  • @SteveResin Fuck me, can't I even view a Steeleye Span song on Youtube without seeing morons use the word "we" without using their brains.

  • @mmasny you're never alone with schizophrenia.

  • @SteveResin I understand you're referring to yourself. Schizophrenia would explain your post perfectly. So you weren't trying to speak for other people. You just thought you _were_ other people. Alright.

  • So happy my English significant other got me introduced to these folks. They rock.

  • I hear this vocal harmonies and my eyes are filled with tears. When I was 11 I heard Steeleye Span the first time and I loved it. I wanted to become a musician and touch the souls with my voice and my music. - I am a musician since 29 years. Today I received an order for one of our children CDs with a wonderful coment: "I am happy that my grandson will grow up with your music.."

Thanx to Steeleye Span, to Joan Baez, to Ougenweide and ever and ever thanx to J.S.Bach. You showed me my way.

  • the english being the nicest people?...compared to the welsh of the valleys they are stuck up repressed twits ahah (i am generalising horribly ;) )

  • Maddie's voice comes through beautifully on this

  • fiddles at end are inspired

  • I can't help but to look at the comments every now and then. It's quite hilarious to look at all the stuff you people post that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic that this is a song. Nothing more, nothing less. A brilliant song mind you, but really doesn't have much to do with most of what these comments are arguing about.

  • I must admit I just LOVE the instrumental at the end. It makes you feel big, and gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling between your stomach and your chest.

  • There are ignorant, racist bullies everywhere- north, south, my country, other countries- I love living in the south and we have no more churlish louts than other places in America but there are fewer frenetic, rude, pushy northerners for which I am grateful- there are parcels of rogues all 'round

  • This song is on my mind tonight, election night in the USA. It seems very appropriate.

  • Really good band blacksmith is my favorite

  • a good song even with maddy pryor she will never be this good again

  • @atfatw balls

  • If Iceland joins the EU, this will be my song.

  • Really cool stuff! I love it!

  • poor old maddy make that old english fat sot retire as she sounds so nasty now that she lost her talent

  • Gives me shivers!

  • The "Parcel of Rogues" doesn't refer to the English but rather to the Lords of Convention, a house of the then Scottish Parliament and one of the Three Estates. It was they who signed away Scottish Independance in return for vast bribes.

  • @johnnugentiscool

really? i never knew that.....now the song makes sense

  • As good a rendition of this great song as I've ever heard. Thanks Skirmish.

  • Bobby Burns is a primary example of genius in minimalism. The rendition does an impeccable job in the continuance of that tradition.

  • @StratifiedHorizon

Who the HELL is Bobby Burns, the poets name is Robert!!!!!!!!!!

  • @stooriefit.... I hope you are kidding. The pedestrian version of Robert is Bob... everything he wrote was simplified, and I have taken such liberties in reference to his name my entire life; especially on January 25 when my family would celebrate a celebrated cultural icon. In your defense (since the feeble minded has none) Bobbie, Robbie or Rabbie Burns is a more historically correct spelling. But then again if your name was Richard I suppose I could refer to you as a Dick. -Cheers

  • @StratifiedHorizon Not kidding !!! Robert Burns is never called "Bobby" in Scotland.

His family called him Rab as a familiar name, and Robert formally.

  • @StratifiedHorizon

Who the HELL is Bobby Burns, the poets name is Robert!!!!!!!!!!

  • @StratifiedHorizon Fuckig drivel !!!!!!

  • @stooriefit Whaaaa??? His name is Robert!!?? I had no bleeding idea, in fact I want to commend you on having a complete lack of a life, for if you had one I wouldn't be privy to your poignant truism. I'm sorry about the misunderstanding being that you actually thought I gave a flying fuk. I must be suffering from sort of alliteration pathology. Your blithe banter reagrding Bobert Burns is bombastic bullsheet. Have a nice life w/ your anal retentiveness Capt Obvious. I feel informed now, thnx.

  • @StratifiedHorizon Could you perhaps tell me what it's like to live your life with your head permanently rammed up your own a'rsehole? Is that why you talk so much s'hite?

  • @heehawluck1 I believe that's a question you are more than capable of examining yourself since you seem to be the expert in rectal cranial inversions. I would assume its a dark and stinky place where foul odor permeates through the very words you decidedly send my direction. Stop spewing unsolicited comments my way; though the very action of it allows a certain amount of deflation with the "s'hite" you seem to be abundantly full of.

  • @StratifiedHorizon I can't make out a single word you're trying to say. Try extracting your head from the depths of your rectum BEFORE attempting dialogue.

Honestly, you'll find it most liberating. No need to thank me .... it was my pleasure.

  • HELLO ,,,,,,MIS CINCO DEDITOS ARRIBA,,,,,,MARTA

  • Timelessly brilliant.

I often quote these words (when I write under a different name), as I attempt to describe the ghastly islamisation of England. A 'parcel of rogues' sums it up.

  • @ChomFa so there are large numbers of Muslims in the UK, so what? Can their peaceful immigration be compared to the brutal anglo-saxon takeover of most of Britain? Have the Muslims driven the English out and taken their language and culture away from them? Have they murdered their leaders as the English did to the Scots and Welsh?

  • @sitithesecond probs is these english aren't taught real brit history...its all 1707 post history in state cirriculum i am afraid

  • @3tangle3 maybe they are too embarrassed to tell them the truth! Nowadays the English would be had up before the International Court of Justice for crimes against humanity.

  • @sitithesecond they even whipped children in nova scotia for speaking gaelic.....the arrogance when canada was never english or scots but 'indian'

  • @sitithesecond

You are so completely crazed, its a wonder you are allowed out alone. What an absurd statement.

By the way, no - muslims haven't done that.....yet, but they will. They always do.

  • @ChomFa don't be so bloody stupid. It's people like you who cause all the wars. What do you know about Muslims anyway?

  • Maddy Prior has the most amazing singing talent

  • Regarding the comment "Not bad, but I'd still much rather hear a Burns recital from a native speaker than a tourist. " You can hear this here on youtube, search for David Sibbald, A Parcel of Rogues in a Nation.

  • The Act of Union has by and large been beneficial to Scotland. It increased trade between Scotland and England - remember the Borders traders were very much in favour - and enabled many Scottish figures to prominence in England. It also came at the time when the Enlightenment was about to start, and England and Scotland shared an intellectual tradition of independent thinking which gradually freed the people from religious dogma. The present quasi-federal structure is just right for Britain.

  • Dear oh dear.

  • Not bad, but I'd still much rather hear a Burns recital from a native speaker than a tourist. In the same respect, if you ever want to hear Shakespeare being spoken in Broad Scots we'll let you know.

  • the welsh and cornish were just subdued and ignored.....justice has still not been done....culture lost....earths variety weakens

  • Scots = French with shit grub

  • don't attack the english..........it was the scottish elite that were the self serving traitors and backstabbers we see in most of human history....reminds me of modern day bankers ^^

  • What an absolutely gut-felt song - I know they're English singing about the Scots, but, hey, the Band were Canadian and listen to them sing "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". What makes this song is the DRUM and the passion of the vocals. You'd be churlish to dislike it - and now listen to their beautiful version of the lament "Bonny Moor Hen" - it'll break your heart.

  • At 15 when we where all getting into hard rock, I got this album and I was hooked. This is still the best rendition of this song!! Even though I was born in the states, I still get choked up listening to it. Can't wait to get to Scotland and discover my family roots.

  • I am a descendant of those expelled from the estates of the Duke of Argylle, and of men that fell at Culloden. Fuck the English

  • @walkerman2503 You're not actually Scottish though, are you? Get to fuck you plastic jock prick, the English did nothing to you.

  • @AKAlex47 don't be harsh...i was raised welsh and i know i am not scots but we still have stories of how our family was forced to live off seaweed and had several relatives dying in their 30s from picking tatties.......bad things happened..lest we forget

  • @AKAlex47 we are basically all peasants english scots or welsh....all led by the same power ego elite no matter who was in charge ;)....ppl like watt tyler and richard lewis are the real heroes hehe

  • atfatw is a git.

He's one of those Americans we don't like to talk about.

I've been a fan of Steeleye since the late 60s.

  • Why isn't this track sung in the original leid, sae Scots?

  • @Chomuno High time it were! Being German I need quite a few drams to understand someone talking the leid - but it´s worth it. Wonderful language, and it would be a shame if it were allowed to be forgotten.

  • There is speculation that Burns did not write it. It would certainly have been considered seditious, sedition carrying a penalty of transportation of hanging. Rabbie got a nice little earner as a taxman through a bit of pull and settled down somewhat after his brazen days. - Fred Johnston

  • Should have been a Burns Supper standard!

  • How ironic that this is far and away the most powerful and spine tingling rendition of the archetypal Scottish whinge chant and it's by an English band!

Never forget that the Act of Union of 1707 that it marks was largely brought about by the Darien Scheme, the hillariously hamfisted attempt at naked imperialism by the Scots in central America which bankrupted Scotland and made the union (which had first been proposed by a Scots king a century before) pretty much their only option.

  • Brilliant harmonies; love all their a capella tracks. And yes, Maddie's voice is terrific. But let's hear it too for the owner (who is he?) of the magnificent bass voice that's just as essential a part of the whole.

  • @Krzyszczynski Tim Hart, I think?

  • where is my pike?

  • Absolutely spine-tingling.

  • Beautiful singing and harmonies...

They were a breath of fresh air in the folk scene at the time...Just Great!....

  • great group!

  • @joeygsmom thanks for share !

  • one of my favourites by the scottish poet by robert burns fantastic

  • Perfect!

  • What's this song about?

  • The Acts of Union 1707.

  • @GotForGimmick

That is some very valuable information adding an extra dimension to the meaning of this song. Thank you for mentioning it!

  • maddy is lovely

  • Thanks for posting here atfatw...in my experience, Americans (especially those who call themselves rednecks or Southerners) are amongst the nicest and most polite people on the planet...

As soon as you´ve sobered up, let´s have a drink. ;)

  • Thanks, Pitfossil!

As an American and a Southerner, I have to say that the nicest and politest folks I've ever hoisted a glass with have been in England and Scotland.

(This is not to slight the Irish; I just haven't been there yet.)

  • @Pangael I'm a 1/4 Welsh and can vouch for Welsh Warmth also. Why not hop to Ireland via Wales?

  • @loquatiousbadger ,

My grandfather was Welsh, and both Wales and Ireland are in our plans.

  • @Pangael I'll return your nice compliment and add that all the Americans I have come across have beautiful manners too! BTW I am British of Irish and Breton descent :-)

  • @Pangael What about the Welsh? Everyone always forgets about Whales. haha

I'm American with Welsh descent, so I had to say something. =)

  • @nothing980454,

Haven't been to Wales, either, but my grandfather was from there. Sorry for the oversight! Cymru am bath

  • @Pangael =) I like you.

  • @Pangael cymru am byth ;) byth = ever.....subscribe to my celtic welsh channel :)

  • @nothing980454 er gwaetha pawb a phopeth, ry'n ni yma o hyd....for the worst of everyone and everything we are still here....friend the welsh are still here

  • @Pangael what about wales?

  • @Pitfossil Well thank you! As an American myself I can safely say yes, there are good and bad in every nation. This is an awesome version and the English singers were certainly against tyrrany as they prove in so many of their songs.

just for the record many of our US Southerners were of Irish/Scottish decent esp in the Appalachians...who do you think taught us Bluegrass? :-)

  • @Pitfossil thanks for the vote of confidence! The whole Bluegrass thing started in the Appalachians, which were largely Irish-Scotts people. Still are in fact.

  • @Pitfossil

There are nice southern people (like me) and there are racist fascist ignorant southern bullies. Lots of the latter.

  • I can't believe that these kids waste everyone's time and earth space with their stupid political and cultural arguments on a music forum. Appreciate the music, children! This is fabulous harmony and wonderful poetry! Steeleye Span is the ultimate in their genre.

  • 'earth space'?

I'll not poke fun at that - English may not be your 1st language.

Why use such a disparaging tone? And repeatedly calling other children leads me to believe you are a young person with a superiority complex, like most YT users...

Though I agree Steeleye were probably the best accompanied folk artists of their day!

  • I would love to. Steeleye Span is the best band in the world, I love them to bits. It's hard when you and everyone else in your country are being compared to dog shit.

  • I love the sound of Maddy and the Spans since more than 20 years!

  • I agree that this is probably the best version of this song, but...The comment that this is the groups is WRONG! You probably haven't heard Below the Salt. It has so many "best" tunes in it and not a single one that is not great. Rosebud in June is an a capella song that is massively unappreciated and disregarded by even the most avid SS fans.

  • Rosebud in June is one of my favorite songs ever, and has been for years!

  • atfatw:Spare us your illiterate anti-English rants. Here we have a tremendous version of Parcel of Rogues by an English band.I'm sure Burns would have loved it as he was a great internationalist.(I'm a Scot by the way)

  • @joehughes9

you are scots. well, so what whoopdedo!

  • Maddy was (is) SO hot....

  • That would be great as long as you put the wall below Northumbria.

also if Scotland wasn't being kept afloat with superior healthcare and free university from English taxpayers...

(No offense, I'm borders - I don't care for England either)

  • are you drunk?

  • are you american?...

  • Comment removed

  • What a stream of xenophobic garbage you come out with. The problems with America cannot be numbered. Don't be mistaken, you're continent is exceptionally unpopular. While most Americans who I have met were pleasant and personable, people like you give your nation a bad name. Your racial intolerance and feeble stereotyping will never endear you and represent your incredible backwardness.

  • Comment removed

  • Great song !

    Death to the union !!!!

  • This is a great Scottish song,to words by Scotland's greatest ever poet. This being the case,is it not just typical of the English that they step in with probably the best version we are ever likely to hear.Bloody cheek.

  • lol, eh, I still prefer the Corries version (you can find it right here on yt)

  • Great track from what is arguably Steeleye's best album.

  • Politics aside - blood is BLOOD.....and that is from a Welsh/Scot/Aust lass; so please dont think that the feelings that this song may inspire is so restricted to just you....WE are world wide now....so smile:) we rule....

  • to be fair we all share the blood of 3 prehistoric African families so all racial disputes are retarded.

  • @impcirca1988 if you go back even further, we're all descended from the same fish who was daft enough to venture on to land :-). In fact all living things on our planet have the same DNA.

  • @sitithesecond true, but that's not even human.

  • @impcirca1988 true, but it shows how closely related all creatures on earth are. I'm just agreeing with you how totally stupid racial disputes are.

  • Ya bunch of ignorant buggers, The "rogues refered to were members of the Scots Parliament who took English gold to sign and pass the Act of Union. After the Act was passed rioting broke out in almost every town and city in Scotland.English regiments of ht British Army were postedto Scotland to keep the population under control.

  • My Apologies you are quite Right, I got carried away, with that total Bigot, but you cannot unfortunately alter the past, but judging

from the last Elections the Scots don't want to leave the Union but again my apologies, I will not bother to answer atfatw pathetic views again, Happy Xmas & New Year to You.

  • You honestl;y believe all English 'are truly pathetic, wimpy, useless, dumb, timewasting folk'

    Bigot.

  • well, okay but only if syphillus paid for free university and cancer treatments unavailable elsewhere....
