You have converted me to the idea of e-readers in this video... I don't know if I am easily swayed or you are good at arguing your point but I suspect it's both :)
I do think that E-books are one of the reasons bookshops are closing. However, I feel that it may be to do with the fact that buying physical books in a physical shops are much more expensie than buying them on say amazon or play. Also, the town I live in (forty minutes north of London) recently lost our only real bookshop (Waterstones, which is going under) because people in my town aren't reading as much, even to the point where one of the 4 public libraries may have to close!(it's a big town)
I really want a kindle now. I've been thinking about purchasing one, and you just confirmed my decision. I love the idea of being able to read whatever book I wanted on the go. Even my school is going to switch to e-readers next year! I will seriously be left behind if I didn't get one.
One thing I think that I would enjoy about e-Readers is that I won't be able to tell how many pages are left. The thing that can get to me when I'm reading is my pace. Sometimes it feels as if I'm getting no where and I give up. You know? Maybe not. I talked to my dad about this and he looked at me like I was crazy. I don't know if I'll get one for a while. I like to annotate what I read and until I have that ability I don't think I'll get one. But we'll see.
Although I love the smell of books and stuff, I have found that the thing I like the most is organizing my bookshelf. I have, however, been looking online at different e-readers and they're growing on me. I know myself, though. I would probably only buy books that I already have, or use it to see if I like a book before buying the physical copy. Which might allow me to read books that I wouldn't have bought otherwise, or it might be a huge waste of money for me.
I don't have a problem adapting, I would love to adapt! :)
However, with this big switch from paper to digital I am unforchantly just one of those readers whose only transactions when it comes my books is my library late fees. I didn't have $20 to spend on a book before the ereader, I'm not going to magically have $100+ to spend buying ereader and digital books either.
You're right that Borders lack of an eReader did lead to its decline, but it was also just an overall bad business model. I was listening to a piece about it on NPR and they said that Barnes and Noble are doing really well (partially thanks to the Nook which now constitute something like 10% of their book sales). Borders just had no good business model, Barnes and Noble, on the other hand, had a strategic plan. The bankruptcy of Borders, like you said, is Borders fault, not the consumer's.
I haven't gotten an eReader, not because i'm against them or think it will replace physical copies of books (i would still buy books even if I had one) but i'm just not sure i need one now, I use my ipod touch and my mom's ipad for classics, but i think once I go to college (and plus so many youtubers have been talking about this issue) i'll be persuaded to invest in one
ditto! i love borders! :D and even though i'm sad many are closing (at least the one closest to my house is still open), I've gotten sooo much stuff on sale. I just love the feel of being in a bookstore!
I picked up my brother's kindle yesterday and I'm pretty sure I fell in love with it. I like the idea that I could carry a kindle around as opposed to the several rather thick books I find myself carting around in my backpack most days.
I think you make a very important point about accepting change- things change all the time, and we must remember to be open to the benefits of the new and not immediately dismiss it because it is different from what we already know or like. people have a tendency to do this a lot, i think its because we get comfortable with the way things are and freak out when that changes, because humans naturally want comfort, security, and safety, and they find that in what they know. but we miss out
Boreder's is closing...? Maybe I didn't know that because I'm not American. Although I do have a Borders membership card. That I never used. Because I don't randomly cross the border to go buy books from Borders...
After flicking about on my friend's kindle, I've decided I love them. I was slightly sceptical at first but as John Green said 'I don't care how people read, as long as they're reading' and I think it's made it a lot more accessible to people who feel slightly self-concious about reading. If boarders had kept up with changing technology, I think they'd be more likely to stay in business- Like the rest of the world, they have to adapt.
I'd like to get an e-reader because I live in Serbia, and it sometimes takes AGES for translators to get a book. Also, most of the time I prefer the originals, so I'd be quite useful for me.
I don't have a problem with e-readers, so I'm not very opinionated on the topic. However I find it annoying that if I got one I'd have to buy my existing books again if I wanted to e-read them.
the reasons you gave for liking ebooks and the kindle made me think more about books etc. you have some good points, I think I'll have to look into it a bit more =D
i've been wanting one forever but what pushed me over the edge is that most of my reading for classes is in pdf form. i hated having to print so much. hah.
How long do you think the nook will be around before B&N has to fall to Apple and Amazon? I think that selling e-readers will help for a little bit with B&N, but yeah, eventually it, too, will have to go. Which I think is sad-yet-understandable-I-guess.
I went to a Borders for the closing sale. I found nothing I wanted. I buy almost all of my books used and normally pay $1 - $3 each.
E-readers are a non-starter for me until we have the Right of First Purchase for digital content. DRM must die. You don't own those e-books, you lease them at another person's whim.
I do want an iPad for reading PDF material however. I'm hoping to pick one up refurbished now that the iPad 2 is out.
The Borders in Dublin went down last year got a barrel load of art books but the Queues were all around the shop like hours long, was that the same where you went? Knew an employee there so joined the "employee queue"
I got an iPad for ereading, but the Dutch iBook store sucks balls, there is about 200 books in there and they all have the same cover. I have nothing against old books, but I want to read modern ones as well.
Sometimes the portability of a book will factor into me getting around to reading, referring to the big books. Having a Kindle would be nice for that. Might let me find time to read more often.
Borders started losing revenue back in 2006, over a year before the Kindle was released. And since most big companies have been falling during the bad economy, the ereaders might not have played that big of a role. I think, simply put, less people are reading, considering 1/2 of all 4-year college graduates ever read a book on their own after they graduate. But I agree, I dont mind ereaders, and you do have to adapt to technological advancements.
Agreed, Borders screwed up. They got too big, too fast, and didn't adapt well. Also, have you tried navigating their website? Ugh.
I don't have an e-reader, and I don't see myself getting one in the near future just for money reasons, (I don't see myself getting many books either) ,but probably someday. We can't just dismiss these kinds of things as "fads." They've been around for awhile now, and everyone's developing their own. It's not a fad, it's the next thing.
@bandgeek8408 I agree. And basically, I chose to cave now, when my "mommy" will still buy me things as opposed to next year when I will be largely supporting my own spontaneous purchases. :P The advantages of being in high school, I suppose.
I will always be a lover of the tangible book, but I think it's necessary that we accept that soon books will be obsolete and ereaders will be the only option. I find it hard to believe that someone can be so opposed to an ereader. I also don't understand why it has to be one or the other for most people. Like, we absolutely HAVE to choose a side or else we can't read. Books are books and will be forever loved but we're a constantly advancing world and it's time to adapt. Also, R.I.P. Borders.
I have a kindle and a fully stocked book shelf. There are quick reads I would rather get for free than pay 10 dollars, and for the larger books 9 or 10 dollars is cheaper than a hard cover. That being said, I will buy a physical book if I like it enough because I want it on my bookshelf. I honestly don't think print will ever die, it might just go the way of vinyl. In the way that it won't be phased out but just be in a smaller scale. And with the way the forests are going that isn't so bad.
I think I will eventually get an e-reader, so that I can be reading more often. But I am sentimental enough that I will still own every paper copy of my favorites. It makes me very sad to think that books could go out of existence someday...
I haven't really seen books on ereaders yet. I'm not really against them, but i think i think they're like reading off a screen, similar to a computer screen and that gives me headaches.
My aunt has a kindle and she absolutely loves it because she travels so much for her work. She says books always took up half of her suitcase. I'm not totally won over just yet, but I think that's just a personal reading preference/style. I don't think ereaders will eradicate paper books, so no hard feelings here.
But... the metals and plastics that go into making the eReaders and other electronics are often times just as destructive in regards to the environment and on the human rights political war front. It's really a matter of picking your poison it seems. There sometimes is not good choice, unfortunately :(
I think that sustainable forestry executed properly and harvested correctly is more pro green than anything digital. However as someone in post secondary education right now I feel it's only fair to warn you, when you get around to spending 10+ hours a day in front of your computer a nice (not glowing) book is amazing. Definitely personal choice, they seem fairly accessible to the older adult readers too, do you think they would be user friendly enough to the aging population?
aww i don't like killing trees...but i love holding books and folding the pages and reading them so much that the spine gets all destroyed....gives them character...:3
I'm pausing the video to scream. AHHHHH! FINISHING THE HAT! I LOVE THAT BOOK! AHHHHH! YOU MUST TELL US HOW YOU LIKED IT WHEN YOU FINISH! AHHH!
Also, one of my issues with an e-reader is that I'm prone to flip ahead to see how long the chapter is, and I would just find it taxing to do it on an e-reader. You know, because I'm a lazy teenager.
I personally have nothing against e-readers, I just don't have much use for them at the moment as I have an amazing library! :D
However, I have contemplated getting one for my school textbooks as they are heavy and cumbersome... also if I do ever become a big book buyer I still wouldn't get the kindle until you can download digital copies with the physical purchase like CD's and, as of late, DVDs.
Thanks for the mention, Kassie! I should note, though, that the ebook version I have up now works with pretty much every ereader under the sun....except the Kindle....which I have...not figured out yet. But thanks!!!!!!!!
A lot of the reasons that you used to defend e-readers are very valid, but I have a few issues. First, this doesn't apply to most people, but I'm a religious Jew, which means that Saturdays are Sabbath and I can't use electricity, but those are the days that I do most of my reading. Also, I love having a physical book (even if it's huge) because it not only lets me sight-gauge how far along I am, but it also lets me flip through it, which you can't do on a Kindle. Plus I love sniffing books xD
My mom and I really want to get Kindle's, but she won't get them, we go through books like Ron Weasley eats food. I've heard others say they didn't care for the Nook, but preference to the Kindle...
once again, your knowledge and intelligence just blows my mind. It's like you just have it all figured out! haha you make me look bad! im a freshman in college and i'm sure my IQ isn't nearly as high as yours haha
This makes me want an eReader a lot more now. But I buy so many books (if not all of them) at a thrift store or book fairs. The day that we can put books we already own onto a eReader is the day I will be getting one.
This video was uncharacteristically preach-y. But maybe it's just because it was the first time I disagreed with you... I mean, how can you know that it was all because of Borders' slowing technology that the company went bankrupt? You didn't cite any actual sources.
I'm not worried about getting left behind by technology just because I don't want to spend over one hundred dollars on a device that will allow me to purchase/read books in a different way.
@GoodMorningMarcus You're right. I didn't cite my sources. But, Barnes and Noble was in the same position of getting ready to declare bankruptcy when the color Nook was released, so I made conclusions that could be incorrect.
And I paid $120 (about the same I'd pay for a decent bookshelf) for a more efficient way to read. I won't have the storage space for a home library next year. And eBooks are cheaper than hardbacks.
I live in the UK, and Borders closed down a while ago, and I miss it a lot. I absolutely adored the massive Borders in the city near me. It sucks that I no longer have a good place to go and get foreign magazines etc from.
I kind of have a mixed opinion of e-readers myself. I prefer the feel of a book and I get too distracted by an e-reader. I also don't think I could justify purchasing one considering how much time I spend reading. I agree with your opinion on Borders being behind though!
I know you said that you were not trying to sell me on e-readers but you kind of just did. I really really want one now for the first time ever. So even though I should be saving for college next year, I'm going to go buy me a kindle.
! You have the exact same ereader case as me (I have a nook, though)!
I am unrealistically happy about this.
Just for knowing's sake, what things did you not like about the nook? I know I'm somewhat grumbly over my lack of 3G, but I can't care enough to switch to a kindle.

@kassiehp0593 Gotcha! :3 I like knowing why people pick certain ereaders, for some reason it's always been an interesting topic of debate for me XD
And I'm gonna pester you and ask: do you have a goodreads account? If you do and you don't want people to follow it that's cool but I'd love to see your opinion on books you read. A lot of my friends don't read at all, so it's fun to find people who do read a lot and see what they think about certain books. Thanks~!
@FezVlogger Sorry, I didn't get this question for a week! Bah! I DO have a goodreads account. The name is the same as my youtube: kassiehp0593
You're welcome to add me, I don't update TOO often and I can't say that I'm great at writing reviews (I rate them, though) but you're welcome to peruse. :D
I used to be really opposed to e-readers (and well, I probably still won't be getting one), but hearing your (and others) arguments for them make me reconsider a bit.
You have converted me to the idea of e-readers in this video... I don't know if I am easily swayed or you are good at arguing your point but I suspect it's both :)

Jeese I've missed your fast talking.

what are your thoughts on barnes and noble then?

My mom and I really want to get Kindle's, but she won't get them, we go through books like Ron Weasley eats food. I've heard others say they didn't care for the Nook, but preference to the Kindle...

once again, your knowledge and intelligence just blows my mind. It's like you just have it all figured out! haha you make me look bad! im a freshman in college and i'm sure my IQ isn't nearly as high as yours haha

EFF YES. You made e-readers sound even better than I thought they were. So... uh... I may just go get one.
...with birthday money.
...if I can afford it after VidCon and whatever I budget for next year.
...which is still up in the air.
...also, random, eh? :P
SORRY I'LL JUST PACK AWAY MY EGO BECAUSE I HATE YOU AND WE'RE FIGHTING. THAT'S WHY I LEAVE COMMENTS ON VIDEOS. BECAUSE I HATE THEM.

GoodMorningMarcus 11 months ago

I love me some 'real' books...but you make very good points!

Can you actually get any of the HP books on the Kindle? I can't find any!

@outsidergirl Uhm. Well. Technically, no. Really, yes. Where there's a will, there's a way.

@kassiehp0593 That's untrue. Where there's a will, there's a Colin.

@FezVlogger I actually have a nook case FOR MY KINDLE. :O
I just didn't like that it was backlit and touch screen. I like how simple the kindle is.
kassiehp0593 11 months ago
@kassiehp0593 Gotcha! :3 I like knowing why people pick certain ereaders, for some reason it's always been an interesting topic of debate for me XD
And I'm gonna pester you and ask: do you have a goodreads account? If you do and you don't want people to follow it that's cool but I'd love to see your opinion on books you read. A lot of my friends don't read at all, so it's fun to find people who do read a lot and see what they think about certain books. Thanks~!
FezVlogger 11 months ago
@FezVlogger Sorry, I didn't get this question for a week! Bah! I DO have a goodreads account. The name is the same as my youtube: kassiehp0593
You're welcome to add me, I don't update TOO often and I can't say that I'm great at writing reviews (I rate them, though) but you're welcome to peruse. :D
kassiehp0593 11 months ago
@kassiehp0593 No worries about the late reply, I've been rather busy myself XD
My account name should be Emmie but if not it'll probably be Kura-something. :D Thank you!

I used to be really opposed to e-readers (and well, I probably still won't be getting one), but hearing your (and others) arguments for them make me reconsider a bit.
