Does anyone know why ranchers can't purchase tranquilizer rifles and rounds that wildlife services use? When I return to the countryside upon completion of a graduate degree, I would be open to such a firearm to protect my horses and family from wolves on my property. I would be open to sleeping them, caging them and then relocating them to wildlands far from ranchers.
Now 3 weeks later, I ran across this post of mine and realize that it would be a disaster. I will not have time to cage and then drag that cage back to my ranch. Relocating them would only result in more breeding and a higher concentration in an area soon to be insufficient to sustain the population.

There have been numerous studies done in Canada that have to do with predator / prey relationship and that is why they have programs for managment of each species so that the animal numbers stay at sustainable levels and almost all species are flourishing other than some areas where unvavorable weather and snow conditions effected the moose and sheep populations.

This reminds me of my real life story.
Long time ago I bought a wolf cub from hunters who killed his mother.
There were six cubs and I wanted to buy them all to release them back into the wild. I simply had no enough money except for one. I named him Lik.
He lived with german shepherd female (same age) until she died.
After 10 years I found a female wolf for him and released them together...
I needed more than 24 years to help his familly to survive.

Although I think the wolf reintroduction to Idaho was a horrible idea, they are here to stay, so why not manage their population like we would any other big game animal? Although a majestic animal, wolves are no more special than any other animal. In the Lolo elk unit of Idaho 75% of cow and calf deaths are from wolf predation, and too many elk are dying to maintain the population, it is dropping.

I thought you could TRUST the biologists in the park? yea, right. So much of that park is shutdown to backpackers now due to bear problems it is hardly worth going there. Does anyone know why ranchers can't purchase tranquilizer rifles and rounds that wildlife services use? When I return to the countryside upon completion of a graduate degree, I would be open to such a firearm to protect my horses and family from wolves on my property. I would be open to sleeping them, caging them and then relocating them to wildlands far from ranchers.

I am glad to see that in yellowstone and other area's we do not have wolves teetering on the brink of extinction, it is important that we make sure they do not dissappear completely. However, you are talking about packs of what are pretty much natures perfect killing machines starting to roam places where they pose a major threat to the businesses of cattle and sheep ranchers, and also are even beginnig to become a problem in getting into household pets.

They have gone into peoples yards in populated areas and killed dogs. Sometimes its not even a sneaky manner, some hunters outwardly boast about it.
Livestock can be easily protected if the proper safeguards are in place (e.g. heard guardians and the use of rubber bullets). This may not stop all losses, but it will cleave them down to a crumb - though in a majority of cases they will stop depredation in its tracks.

Have you ever even had anything to do with wolves? Ever seen them wipe out entire stone sheep bands? There are too many wolves around here already, everone hunts the ungulates and nobody hunts the predators, hence overpopulation of wolves= decline of ungulate populations in colder winters with lots of snow. It happened to the moose here 2 years ago and the #s will take years to come back. I like wolves too they are an amazing hunter/family animal but there are still to many around here

The wolf regulates its numbers in accordance with prey populations. Weather patterns and health of the breeding pair also play key factors in the reproductive cycle. There's no scientific backing for what is done in Canada, the board of game is by money grubbing outfitters.

There have been numerous studies done in Canada that have to do with predator / prey relationship and that is why they have programs for managment of each species so that the animal numbers stay at sustainable levels and almost all species are flourishing other than some areas where unvavorable weather and snow conditions effected the moose and sheep populations.

Canada does not destroy wolves as you say, there is a hunting season on them just like most other species we have in Canada. Only hunters report this because hunters spend the most time in the bush. Someone that goes out into the bush for a few weeks or months and writes a paper on it... is he really getting the whole picture? I think not!

There is no biological or ethical justification for hunting predators. That is where people fail to advance - beyond greed.
The Australian D.P.I. takes $30,000,000 taxpayer dollars per annum from QLD alone to massacre dingoes in the state.
Canada kills wolves in MASS quantity every year - some just for leisure (including National Parks and Reserves), costing around $3000 per trip per person, others are simply exterminated through poisoning and aerial gunning.

The moose number is governed by weather and by the amount of vegetation available. Its not an easy life as a herbivore - there are other factors including disease and organ problems. Humans take more than wolves so don't whine about what is YOUR fault.

Good to see the US fish and wildlife has killed more than half of the wolves to manage them. Puts the fear of man back into a natural born killer.
