It's among my favourite Kerouac prose too... I was so moved by Railroad Earth that on my first trip to the US in 1980 I went and stood at Third and Townsend... a first literary pilgrimage. I had worked on freight trains in the UK, and found some delightful connections in his observations from the S.P.
That's where I first heard this spoken word poetry, actually, although I had read Kerouac before. Great to see good music and prose mingle together. The singer of Jawbreaker, Blake Schwarzenbach, is a big fan of Kerouac.
