c'mon this is quite a good version. this is not an easy song to pull off live. you try doing it. i don't know if I exactly get the decemberists shtick but they are smart and cool enough to try this. honestly, you try pulling this or like I am the Walrus live
The friend who shared this with me is an ELO purist and mocked it horribly--I'm pleasantly surprised however at this fun and probably unexpected concert treat. I would have preferred it though if they'd put more of a Decemberists twist than stick so close to source. The last tour they used My Brightest Diamond's frontwoman for Yankee Bayonet and she did the same thing, rendering the song less than it could have been. Good capture.
This is sort of weird... I recently went to the record store and baught both the ELO album "Out Of The Blue", with this song on it, and also The Decemberists "The Tain". Strange how stuff like that can relate...
I think it was nice, and please when making a comment about how something isn't done up to one's standard, please try to spell things correct, I mean are you capable of spelling words RIGHT?
This is by far the highest quality footage I've seen of them doing this cover. And while watching it here doesn't compare to being there while they do it live (.. during which my jaw dropped)I can pretend.
Thank you so much for posting this... I needed a tangible form of this wonderful memory so badly. Cheers! PS... My favorite band (the D's) linking with my favorite film (Eternal Sunshine...) is far too priceless.

Lame try at the solo. :(

I must admit, his voice doesn't match the song - but at least they make it their own.

yes the delgados version wins as well

@inputmodule its a pretty standard cover, nothing great. I've done it live and seen it done live a lot of times. I've seen bar bands do it better.

The Delgados did a nice cover of this song also.

Bleh...this is probably the worst cover...but I don't like any covers of this particular song much, because ELO did it best!

Still waiting for an Al Stewart cover, but this will do just fine. Love the leap and Chris' side-to-side head bob in time.

the band is quite good... if only the funny looking guy would be able to sing...soooooooooooooo sad :(

They don't sound like ELO, they sound like the Decemberists playing Mr. Blue Sky. Good for them, I liked it!

I can't work out if the lead singer more looks like Buddy Holly or Rick Moranis. It def ain't Jeff Lynne LOL!

Are the decemberists big in the USA? Hardly any of us have heard of them in the UK, they sound pretty good though.
JSofBritain 4 years ago 3
It's the same with most of my favorite bands like Modest Mouse. I like it that way (from a UK perspective)
Hamandjam 4 years ago
They aren't *huge*, but they're semi-well known. The were recognized on The Colbert Report, which has a pretty large fan base.
Any way it goes, I love them.
Penniefinger 3 years ago
They packed out the Royal Albert Hall last November. They sure are pretty popular over here in the UK, and rightly so. Can't wait for the next album.

This makes me smile.
It may not be perfect, but seeing Colin bounce around singing ELO puts a smile on my face.

The Polyphonic Spree, for sure.

Aside from the flubbed lyric early on, this isn't a bad cover. Still have nothing on the original though.
