  • @tannalv, what do you mean, "don't slip"? She sure as hell didn't do it on purpose. Why would someone make that kind of mistake ON PURPOSE? and just because YOU haven't heard of someone legendary doesn't make them unlegendary. Think about what you are saying before you look like a total idiot.

  • No wonder on why the vault apparatus was changed: from narrow and unstable to padded and wider. And its amazing on why for so many years experts didn't realized the dangers of the vault before it was changed until these accidents occurred.

  • @akawhippy The vault was changed after the 2000 olympics when it was set at the wrong height. So many gymnasts crashed into it and they created a vaulting table so gymnasts have more room to push off of it.Had it not been for that controversy they probably would have not changed it.

  • the way oprah says yurchenko XD but this is so sad

  • omg ! oprah is soo skinny?

  • @tannalv She was still a human capable of mistakes. Nobody is perfect all the time.

  • @tannalv You try doing that?

  • @tannalv Must be nice to be perfect. Maybe you can give us all some tips???

  • @BoraBoraGirl2001 Here's a pro-tip for you: don't slip!

Yelena Mukhina? I've never heard of her, so she can't have been that legendary.

  • @tannalv And for the record, many LEGENDARY gymnasts, including former World champion Yelena Mukhina, have made an uncharacteristic error that resulted in serious injury or death. Anything can happen, REGARDLESS of how well-trained an athlete is. They are not robots.

  • julissa gomez and sang lan are two of the biggest reasons why the vault was changed. now its more padded and wider

  • Al did coach them, but he did NOT tell Christy she was fat, it was the judge. He has gone on to coach 2 Olympic medallists, one of which is a friend of mine.

  • yea but he called her the pillsberry dough girl sometimes, even though it was meant as a joke because her posture was so bad her stomach always stuck out. she took it the wrong way after the judge incetend. however the judge was who told her that needs to go to hell.

  • there is a price for everything and bad side you have to be soldier to be a gymnast if you can't handle gymnastics you need to leave the sport

  • wasn't Julissa Gomez coached by Al Fong? He was also the coach of Christy Henrich. That man should not be coaching anyone. He takes no responsibility for the powerful position he holds in their lives...and if you ask him about these girls he says with a smirk "I had nothing to do with their deaths..." He absolutely did and he doesn't appear to be even remotely sorry. Pig

  • @CampbellScot I do think he was completely involved. He should not push a move onto a girl if all the needed skills aren't perfected. He should also know his gymnasts well enough to recognize when something isn't right with their energy and body.

  • @CampbellScot fyi, bela karolyi coached julissa gomez and christy henrich

  • Everything is dangerous. The point is to do it safely. When you walk, you make sure you don't trip and you are walking on a safe surface. When you eat you don't eat unknown things because they can be poisonous. When you do gymnastics you have to do the right skills and do them correctly. This is the responsibility of the gymnast and, most importantly, the coach. The coach is the one who tell the gymnast what to do, how to do it. IIRC Al Fong was the coach of both Gomez and Henrich.

  • This is not the then-Communist countries of Romania and USSR where children have no choice. These parents could have pulled their daughters out of the sport. You wouldn't hear them complaining if their daughters won Olympic medals. If your under-18 child were being hit, starved, and screamed at, then pull her out of the sport! These parents have no right to complain about the coaches when they are just as guilty. I think I remember Mary Lou stating, "You don't hear complaints from the winners."

  • are there any videos of there accideents im sad but i want to see

  • Um, did Oprah totally cut off Gomez' mom? Ug. Oprah irritates me.

  • That doesn't have anything to do with what I just said. And I've seen this comment from you before. Do you just copy and paste it randomly throughout YouTube?

  • yeah a bunch of people do that! he (or someone) posted that on my video and my friend's videos like 3 times! i think they just look for gymnastics related stuff and randomly post it....ugh i hate spammers!

  • The book was good, but it was very slanted. Much was left out that wouldn't have allowed Ryan to make her case so . . . convincingly.

  • Kriste Philips is still alive

  • Weren't there a lot of injuries on the old vault and isn't that why they changed it to a vaulting table?

  • yes, the new vault table is considered safer.

  • yeah i don't think the yurchenko is as dangerous on the real vault.

  • i wish jullisa gomez didnt die or get paralized, that is so sad,sfe didnt deserve to get paralized

  • is the book better than the movie?

  • the movie hasn't got much to do with the book - it's a fictional story which involves some of these issues

  • ok thanks

  • i couldn't put the book down, but i can't put ANYTHING gymnastics down...

  • Life in general is dangerous, you can break your neck falling down the stairs and you never hear anyone saying stairs are dangeours.

Lok around you evenrything is dangerous, gymnastics is just over emphasized

  • No. Despite all the precautions gymnastics has taken to make the sport safer, the fact of the matter is, it's an incredibly dangerous sport, just like riding horses. In gymnastics you're flipping, twisting, jumping and landing from heights of the equivalent of 3 storey buildings. One wrong move, bad landing, lack of focus, could paralyze you. I'm glad gymnastics has become a lot safer since it's been publicized and critized. Now do the same for the sport of eventing (another horse riding sport).

  • but gymnastics isn't more dangerous than any other sport, why should the parents deprive there kids from what they love. My mom could never stop me from getting to my dreams

  • I bet the Gomez and Henrich family will tell you it isn't worth it.

  • while i disagree - our sport definitely has more risk - i think all these people marking you down for your comment (who i'm sure will come after me now) are nuts. they probably aren't in love with gymnastics. my parents sometimes worried about me, but they knew i was being trained well and they gave me every advantage they could.

gymnastics isn't just a sport, it's a life. some people shouldn't live this life. it's up to them.

  • i know!! i just got like spammed for sticking up to my sport, what baout that guy that died playing soccer, hockey, every sport is dangerous,

gymnatsic is probably the sport with the most safety measures

  • Very well said, and very true. Problem is, this video is mostly about Oprah's fat ass, and it attracts a bunch of bottom-feeder Oprah fans, not hardcore gymnasts and gymnastics fans. The book started the fire, and Oprah is doing everything she can to capitalize on it before it blows out. Your most important statement: some people shouldn't live this live. MOST people shouldn't live it. I sure don't. I just follow it. I couldn't do it. RESPECT for ALL competing gymnasts!

  • I saw the movie, read the book and was a gymnast from the time I was 4 until I was 20. I loved the sport, and never had any problems.

  • And you're one person of millions, you were one of the lucky ones. Your point?

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I did gymnastics as a kid and read the book, but was never able to see the show.

  • this was a great book

  • wow!the blonde lady went to my gym

  • Thank you for posting this amazing talk show segment GYMANGELS! It's disturbing, and so sad at once.

  • my pleasure!
