Actually, Verne didn't think he could get over in the AWA (despite the huge reaction he got from AWA crowds) so he let him go. For some reason, Verne didn't employ a lot of black men....hmmmm.
Tony Atlas was one helluva pro inside and outside of the ring. You can tell that deep down behind all the muscles he was just a regular, friendly, laid-back old country boy...
