But the countries in *Great Britain* are scotland, england, and wales. United kingdom is another thing altogether. The united kingdom of great Britain and northern Ireland. The uniting of two kingdoms Britain and the north of Ireland. Similarly USA is the united states of america is split into 50 states and had they = countries in a sense. Own government etc. Therefore America is a division of states when united form the United States that form america. =/

@RelativeBadger Using that logic, England isn't a country; England is the unification of England and Wales. Then this new Unification-England is also unified with Scotland to form Great Britain, and this Unification-Great Britain unified with Ireland to make the United Kingdom.
Basically, the UK is a unification of a country(Ireland) and a unification(GB), of which is also a unification of a country(Scotland) and another unification(England), which is a unification of England and Wales.

I apologize & I am sure you are a good teacher too. I have a fascination/infatuation with history. I've read about the Laws in Wales Acts, Acts of Union, etc. You say separate "countries". When most people hear that they think "sovereign" nation. Wales, N. Ireland, Scotland are not totally sovereign. I see do your point though.

The UK is a political binding that is not on the level of country, as pointed before, using your logic you may as well call countries in the EU one country, or why not the world? we share laws.

@geofffrank a simple google search will tell you usa is a country [that] is situated mostly in central North America. a federal republic, but still a country. if you believe otherwise, state the names of the countries in usa. the countries in uk are wales, england, northern ireland and scotland.

@zombieravens I don't know what you think google is but the one that exists would state that USA is an equivalent to a sovereign state, and therefore areas within that state that are defined by geographical or political context would be the equivalent to a country. That does not mean i have to say there are countries within USA, it just further backs my point that the USA does not fit in standard boundaries. The fact that you could compare the EU and England shows you dont know what a country is

We share 'treaties', political issues, the sovereign and certain aspects of education and law, but NOTHING more. Each country has its own parliament and election systems. With your logic, I take it that both Paraguay and Brasil are also part of The United States?

And here in the 1700's, the 13 colonies had little in common. So much so that we fought a civil war in 1861. BraZil was a Portuguese colony BTW! NOT a British colony. Why would it be part of the USA? The UKs only South American colonies were Falklands & Guiana. You're much denser than I initially thought. Your like a black hole. What is your point anyway?
