Remember this match very well. I was 13 at the time and I became an England fan that summer. (from Norway) Sinced that I always supported England in every championchip.
Personally I thought hoddle had england playing beautifully throughout the qialifications for the WC and was a little unlucky (we deserved to beat Romania but hit with a sucker punch and then there was the Beckham incident). I don't think you can blame Hoddle for a lack of technical knowledge or the way his teams played (let's not forget Venables only really had 2-3 good games in charge - admittedly when they counted).
Due to the mismanagement by the FA of the England team we were denied that team to see if they could have gone one step further to make an impact at France 98, we would then have had Scholes and Beckham to bring on as well. Hopefully lessons have been learnt at the FA to make sure good things are captured and passed on to the next generation. Where are the left footed players now?
The 3rd England goal has got to be the greatest goal scored by England. Teddy Sheringham's genius in wrong footing the defender and surprising everyone by setting up the perfectly weighted pass for Alan Shearer to latch onto and smash home has to be immortalised. Truly a unique gift Teddy had and alway underated. Teddy Sheringham was player of the tournament for Euro 96. But it was a fantastic team that was out there and everyone quite clearly played their part in allowing Teddy to shine. I
Teddy Sheringham was two-footed had an amazing football brain and gift for space and dimension -completely unselfish and a really unique story of working his way up through the ranks. We need more players like Teddy on the field. If you look at his passing there was never a wasted pass by him. He was as good as Paul Scholes, Gascoigne and Hoddle on distribution of the ball - he just was never given enough credit. People may dispute all of the above I know!. If England are to be successful again
I agree with many of the comments. When Terry Venables left the job after only 2 years a lot of the information, structure that had built up was completely lost within the England team. It was a very special time, I remember visiting their hotel because I worked near Slough at the time and seeing the team bus pull into the gates of wherever it was in Burnham and the players giving us a wave. In all of this analysis, I think you have to pick out Teddy Sheringham as the outstanding player
Why shouldn't we do well in 2012? - don't forget in 1990 and 96 England were written off as talentless no hopers. England always play best when the press and public expect nothing (unfortunately when they do play well the opposite happens).
i was 10 when this game was played i remember it and that tournement and summer that seemed to last for ever! it was a good time for english football.
Oh, and the third goal is probably one of the best English goals I've ever seen too, Gascoigne, Sheringham and Shearer... Beautiful. And as a Spurs fan, 2 out of 3 of them played for Spurs at one time, so thought I'd throw that in there haha.
Born in 1980, I've been watching football since 3. This is THE best English performance I have ever seen in my life, eclipsing the 5-1 over Germany in 2001. The Dutch were feared with their 'total football' at that time, and Ajax were one of the best European sides around too... we made them look like schoolboys. We even 'allowed' them to score the one goal which knocked Scotland out. Brilliant.
@njclondon2009 - I was born in 1989, But if their is one England match which i would of liked to experience live, it would be this one, The third Goal is just beautiful, And is also why Sheringham was one of my favorite strikers (i support Man united btw) He wasn't prolific like Shearer, but he was Unselfish and created alot of Goals, It was a great Team throughout. :)
@njclondon2009 Obviously the 1966 world cup win has to be England's greatest performance. After that I'd rank the 1990 and 1986 world cups. England played really well in both and were unlucky to get knocked out. The 96 Euro comes next with this match being a great performance. It's the one tournament where Shearer really showed his class.
O yes, the Dutch with Johan Cruyff in the 70s were the side that were feared for their "total football".
@Myrrdin33 I wasn't alive for 66, unfortunately, and barely remember 86. But I do remember in 90 we weren't great. Apart from a great display against West Germany (as in 96), we were lucky to get as far as we did - especially against Cameroon. But I do agree, that it was one of our most memorable tournements. I blubbed like a schoolgirl when Nessun Dorma came on after losing to the Germans on penalties - can't really think of a better World Cup that Italia '90 on the whole.
1990 Germany had the better side, but England played fabulous in the semis and, with a deadly Gary Lineker, stretched the Germans to the limits.
1996 England had the better team. There were no Matthaus, Voller, Brehme any longer in the German line-up, and Klinsmann was out injured. Moller and Sammer apart this was a bunch of journeymen. While England played with Shearer, McManaman, Sheringham, Gascogine, Anderton, Ince, Pierce, Platt. They should have won the competition.
@ClassicEngland wont be a surprise if England play as a team and leave roony out of it. He is the achiles heel as so overated. thank god he is banned.. still we have a chance
@chefblanc Over-rarted? I'm no man u fan but he's the best alround forward in the modern game (IMO). Sets up many goals but only gets credit if he scores, and we're not blessed with man great forwards as we once were.
@ChristianJBJ People rediculed and wrote off the team, manager and players before 96 and 1990 - the fact that England have been written off after WC 2010 is no bad thing, especially when you've got Gerard, A johnson, Rooney, Wilshire, Jones, Cole, Parker etc in the side - lack of quality certainly isn't the problem. Lack of belief in the public who think we have a God given right to walk into the semis is. bring on 2012.
it waas heart what won this, they had better players 'on paper' but they weren't 'England'

True. Klinsmann said that Sheringham was the best striking partner he had in his career.
