Biasha Miao men wore the real hmong clothes for Hmong men. Many other Miao group are wearing traditional Chinese clothes now. My father, his cousins, uncles, and older Hmong folks use to have this hair style until the late 60's. People started to cut of their long hair and assimilate to the Lao community. We still have an old grandpa that is still alive. He still keep his hair like that today here in the US. He's about 100 years old right now.
Although I love my hmong people, i feel that performances like this reinforce stigmas and steriotypes of our people. meh, i doubt that authentic Hmong peoplce dance this way in the mountians. just food for thought.
The clothing looks just like Hmong. What kinda Hmong is this? I'd like to see our Hmong guys interact in this kinda dance. Our tradition is dying out.
Yes, these are the Basha Hmong. I read somewhere a while back that the Basha Hmong are the only ethnic group allowed to carry rifles. These flintlock rifles are identical to the ones our ancestors carried with them when they left China.
