  • theres this kid in my class he plays trumpet but when we play this song he rushes to get his french horn only for this song so i call him a french trumpet

  • :D trying out for french horn solo at my school!

  • Does anyone even know who this was written for?

  • @Fatcowonabus hahahahaha james dean.

  • I play the trumpet and I play both solos for this song!! D: i almost died holding out the notes at UIL!!

  • @yugiohrocks131 OMG IK!!!!!! Every time we hold a note we all lik stopped! it was torture... but worth it :3

  • My concert band is playing this for our concert and competition. Tuning is soooo hard on it, but it sounds so wonderful. Plus after a rehearsal where we nail it, it makes us feel so good inside.

  • And... there. Now this is on my i-pod. Thank you for the nice video quality. Gonna listen to this all the time.

  • As spring was just ending?

  • Favorite piece my band has played, like, ever.

  • Played it my freshman year....had the first trumpet solo :D

  • Playing this as a 7th grader ohhhh yea were great at it i think

  • By far, one of my favorite peices I ever played. This, and, well, Die Meister Singer.

It not only sounds beautiful, but it holds so much meaning.

  • i really liked this song it was beautiful... but i think the whole song should be slower in tempo....

  • I don't think think this was made by Daehn, it was made for him.

  • Comment removed

  • @cresentman correct, this was made by Larry Daehn

  • @cresentman Daehn wrote it for James Dean. Hope this helps.

  • My middle school did this song at regionals and got unanimous superior! So proud!

  • I love how I get chills from this song. It's so beautiful...

  • SEXY! I wish my band sounded close to that...

  • I was in the 2010 FMCMEA Intermediate Band (8th chair Bb clarinet)

We played this for our second piece and this actually turned out to be the hardest one for us

  • An amazing piece!!

  • im curently learning this on the tuba

  • As a 9th grader, I am playing 3rd part (but am second horn) on the French horn and the whole piece is lovely.

  • this will... give tears.

  • yeeeahhh love this song. im a tuba player playing this for my HS band. is it just our band, or does the flute and clarinet entry suck for everyone else? we all have to cover our ears at 1:03 haha

  • I'm a 9th grader first clarinet, playing this this year. I think it's a very beautiful piece. When the key changes, how do people playing that clarinet part keep it under control? High D (two lines above the staff, NOT second from top line) keep it together?

  • @FlamingRain231 Keep practicing the note using your major scales and going up to that note. Example: do a C Scale and go all the way to the D and go all the way down. Do this with all of your Major scales and you'll see improvement. Try and grab a tuner, if possible because the tendency of that note is to go sharp. You can add more fingers in your right hand to lower the pitch but it depends on your clarinet. I hope this helps.

  • @FlamingRain231 I'm a first clarinet too playing this song.

For higher notes, you probably just need to bite down on the mouthpiece a bit harder and keep your air steady. You might also need to tighten your embouchure (the muscles around you lips) a bit. Hope it helps C:

  • Omg u can here tenor sax!!!!!

  • @MisieRandom321 when we played this for quabbin valley i was one of three tenors out of like 150 other kids. The freaking clarinets played so loud but we still played our part out loud. i love the call and response with the french horns and the flutes at 2:58 but the part at 3:12 where the tenors come in is breathtaking.

  • We're playing this song in HS band as well, and i have the fourth french horn part. I have to say, this piece is awesome to play and a beautiful composition.

Thx for posting such a good, professional version. ^-^

  • @GuiltySorrow

Haha, I'm playing the 2nd Horn part in a High School Band! You should come play with us-- only three Horns auditioned into my band, so we're missing the 4th part D:

  • @Wyrdfell09 Oh no! :O I'd love to help out... Unfortunately, I know can't... D: I'm sure you guys will sound awesome either way (even if the 4th part IS awesome XD) So, gl! :D

  • @Wyrdfell09 I feel for you. Our high school band doesn't have ANY horns.

  • @FlamingRain231 Dude, no horns on this song is like murder!!

  • @valerity007 Not if you have the best Trumpet players in the region playing in it! It actually sounds really good and the Alto saxes are really good too! We have too many clarinets too! THEY OVERPOWER THE FLUTES.

  • @justinmcfarland100 justin, go f*k yourself. i do not overpower the flutes :P

  • @FlamingRain231 Ya you do when they are suppose to be the melody you blow our your part and it sounds like crap.

  • @justinmcfarland100 oh my god i love how two people in the same band are arguing over a friggin youtube comment. :) good times

  • @FlamingRain231 Your just jealous of my awesomeness... HOMO!

  • @FlamingRain231 yay clarinet!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha

  • @valerity007 yes horn iz must in this piece, lyk seriously no trumpet can play this jus as gud or betta than da horn does

  • @valerity007 I play horn and i blow my face off for this song D:

  • @MSquaredCubed you think this song is bad on horn1...try o magnum mysterium....basically a solo for over 100 some bars :P

  • Our Junior High top group is playing this for contest in Dallas. I find the piece to be beautiful and inspiring to a wanna-be composer.

I'm first chair trumpet, and I'm playing the solos... Very great piece!

We're playing this in addition to Karl King's "Circus Days", and Frank Ticheli's "Cajun Folk Songs" -- In which I have solos. :) Ticheli is great!

  • @jillhpotter54 I have first trumpet on this song too and we did play a Ticheli piece. Only our Ticheli piece was "Joy". Both great songs.

  • Comment removed

  • @jillhpotter54 Weird. I'm doing this song in HS Band, and another piece of ours is Torch of Liberty by Karl King... huh

  • @WanderingPictures thats so weird! we played this piece for a contest along side torch of liberty too!

  • @jillhpotter54 We're playing this song too and we just played Joy by Ticheli!

  • Im a tuba player that has to play this song, any tuba players out there, do you have any advice?

  • I love how we have the melody through most of it and it's such a pretty song

  • We are playing this and it sounds really cool (I play French horn)

  • @1998Cisco I played Horn back in high school and I'll never forget playing this song and many other F Horn heavy pieces. I miss it greatly (and will always believe it's the world's greatest insturment cuz only God knows what will come out of it)!

  • Bb --> Eb --> C

  • wat movie is this from? or wat movie has this in it?(basically same question)

  • It sounds beautiful. For a beginner band it is nice to leap into some heavier music especially since there is no real key signature error possibilities, seeing that it is in the key of Bb.

  • @NarumiKenshin The whole song is not in Bb..there are...3 key changes if i can remember correctly

  • @nonamesleftatall1 3 keys, 2 key changes

  • where can i download a professional recording like this one, i've looked everywhere!!! :-/

  • UGH we played this when I was in high school for our spring band concert. I loved it... then fell even more in love with it when I fell in love with James Dean!

  • BEAUTIFUL song.... my favorite corale

  • 1st

  • We just played this song at our spring concert. It moved our conductor to tears and we got a standing ovation. This was the last song we played in our middle school career, the end of 3 memorable years with an amazing teacher and orchestra. (We played a strings arrangment) We say farewell...As summer was just beginning.

  • im playing this for my school too. its such a beautiful song. i love it!

  • This song is just beautiful. This song and On A Hymnsong Of Philip are some of my favorite of all time. (If you havent checked on On A Hymnsong please do, its very similar sounding to this)

  • @nonamesleftatall1 on a hymnsong of phillip bliss sounds nothing like this. It's still a beautiful piece. I wish Holsinger was known for more for it though.

  • @TheBlaze1426 I think they sound very similar. They have similar phrasing. A major difference though are the key changes in As Summer. I agree with you on Holsingers music.

  • We're playing this at a high school band level to work on phrasing- It's am amazing song for that at a HS level

  • trumpets are beautiful in this. as are french horns.

  • We started playing this piece today (I am in 8th grade) and I think we actually did well...we usually don't haha...

  • @jasiness95 HEY ITS JASMINE...yea its lee..weird :P

  • xD lol Lee

  • u from cdm

  • @jasiness95 Cool! We are playing this too. Im in 8th grade, What instrument?

  • @nonamesleftatall1 tenor sax :D

    What do you play?

  • @jasiness95 I play the Tuba and the doublebass. I play the tuba in band and doublebass in orchestra.

  • Love this, the french horns are beautiful

  • Finally the actual professional recording. None of these middle schools that are.. still learning.

  • @Cheeser2012 Excuse me. But that is sort of offensive.

  • @kaosGOM00 how? I played this last year, I thought this was a pleasant surprise.

  • where do you find the recordings for these pieces? and if you know where i could find a decent recording of the piece "And the Angels Called", could you let me know? ive been looking for ages.

  • Very wonderful piece, and anyone tell me who did this recording?

  • It is a failing of YouTube that artists are hardly ever credited, possibly for fear of copyright protection, or simply because the performers are freelance, and never identified.

  • This recording is actually by the Texas Wind Symphony. I just never got the chance to credit them. Also, I don't know if you mean it this way, but i try my best to credit the bands that I use and there are a lot that I just generally don't know. I am trying my best and i'm sorry for the inconveniences of not posting the bands playing.

  • Please don't apologise, I think what you are doing here is great.

  • @Peripatetic45 that is sooooo true, and btw this is an exceptional song, but do you know who it was written for and why? thats an even better story, james dean died and this song was written about his life

  • @TheHermes615 Thanks for the background, Hermes :)
